Monday Morning Questions Post: Let’s All Rank SRK!

Happy Monday!  I get to have coffee today!  I go off it over the weekend, and it’s the one thing that makes it kind of exciting to get to Monday morning when I have to go to work.  Anyway, I am all caffeinated and ready to discuss stuff!

As always, you can ask me any question, from the personal (“Really? No coffee over the weekend?”) to the specific and factual (“is coffee a part of Indian culture and if so, how?”) to the general discussion topics (“caffeine-blessing or curse?”).

The only rule is, you have to let me answer first!  The discussion just goes better that way.

Now, a question for you!  I’ve been doing these lists for Shahrukh, and there have been a few of them with specific rankings and so on.  Which were SUPER HARD!!!!  So now I am going to challenge you to do the same.

I had to do a specific number, but I am going to make it easy for you!  You can do any number of entries you want, including just the one best.  But if you do more than one, you do have to rank them!!!  Otherwise it’s just too easy.

  1. I’ve talked a lot about my ranking ideas in the comments on those posts, but will think about my top 3 for each of them–at least for today. Looking forward to what other people have to say! My question is–do you think you’ll do a full 31 day Shah Rukh celebration, or go back to 15 days? Would it depend on whether a lot of interesting releases are coming out, or more on other factors?

    • Conveniently, Shahrukh’s birthday tends to line up with Diwale, which means there is only the one or two big releases during his birthday month.

      More importantly, my Shahrukh birthday posts are getting like double the views of my other posts. So clearly the interest is there, why not keep doing the 31 days? Plus, I am still keeping up with my other regular posts, so it is manageable to do SRK and everything else at the same time.

  2. Oh boy! Thats going to be tough, but i will try my best with a top 10 🙂 It will take some time so i’m coming back later. I’m thinking the most difficult matter will be the ranking… well let’s see how it goes… Happy monday to you!

  3. This is a very exciting challenge, as I am now just five movies away from completing my chronological trek through SRK’s films. I have actually been ranking them in various ways as I go.

    My question for you: how would you rank his friendly appearances?

  4. I will just do best performances, since this is a conclusion I came to a long time ago. The only caveat is that I haven’t seen many of his recent movies, as they just didn’t interest me, though I saw everything up to Swades (but not CDI, which I started, but it didn’t hold my interest). So with that, I think his top three performances are Dil Se and Asoka (tied) followed by Oh Darling Yeh Hai India.

    • Well, I feel like I should mark points off for all your combining of rankings! But I will let it go.

      Really interesting to see K3G on your performances list. I think he does a good job, especially in the little “lonely little boy” moments in the second half, but it has never really blown me away. I may need to rewatch. And same for characters. It’s interesting seeing him grow from a flirtatious boy to a grown man and head of a family, but it has never struck me as a particularly remarkable character.

      I would put Anushka ahead of Rani too, which is mostly a tribute to Jab Harry Met Sejal. They really did something special there, which moves them past Rani, despite Paheli, KANK, and Chalte Chalte, which were super complex and difficult co-lead roles for them.

      Chammak Challo is SO GOOD!!! Glad to see it getting so much love. Oh, and if you like Bole Chudiyan, you have to watch Loins of Punjab, there is the sweetest tribute to it.

      • I was a bit lazy in combining them all! I would definitely have some different characters mixed in there if I thought about it harder (maybe Raees, maybe Don, etc).

        I think I like his role in K3G because for me it’s one of my favorite romantic roles of his (especially of that era…since I’m not a big DDLJ fan) and it does have lots of great crying jags and you get to see him as a married father and big brother type which is always nice.

  7. I’m just not decisive enough today for best films, characters, or performances. Easier to list the ones I won’t go out of my way to watch again: Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and English Babu Desi Mem. I just can’t with those two movies. And I still haven’t seen Karan Arjun, Trimurti, Badshah, Dil Ashna Hai, Guddu, and several of his friendly appearances.

    Here are my favorite (not really the same as best, I know) co-stars and songs. I aimed for 10 but ended up with 14 for both. Apologies in advance for any mispellings of songs!

    Best co-stars, starting with the best: Juhi, Rani, Anushka, Kajol, Deepika, Madhuri, Anupam, Jackie, Satish, Amrish, honorable mention for Aishwarya, Nana, Johnny, and Naseeruddin.

    Best songs, starting with the best (counting song and picturisation together): Suraj Hua Madham (despite the granny swiss polka dot shirt), Kaali Kaali Ankhen, Sona Nahin Na Sahi, Yeh Ladka Hai Allah, Lodi, Titli, Haule Haule, Tere Naina, Marjaani, Aaj Ki Rat, India Waale (please don’t judge–it’s so happy and colorful and there’s that lovely little slow bit in the middle!), and there’s a tie among Radha, Beech Beech Main, and Raula.

  8. Best Performances
    1) JHMS,Swades, CDI ,Dear Zindagi, FAN, Darr, KHKN, My Name is Khan, Rab Ne, Paheli

    Best Characters

    Harry – One of his career best. What a rake! A heady mix of smoking hot, lonely and heartbroken combined with sexy. I’m in love with his character. I feel this is as close to the actual SRK as we can get.

    Mohan Bharghav – once in a lifetime role for SRK, and he shocked me with his very subtle performance. Truly made me proud to be his fan. Made a fan out of my husband who up until this point made fun of my SRK obsession. Every scene was impactful. He lived this role. Cheated out of a National Award.

    Kabir Khan – Powerhouse performance. I forgot I was watching SRK. The scene early on where he is consoling his mother, and leaving his home, while maintainting a calm composure belied only by his dark eyes glistening with tears – that scene broke me. I’ve never seen a more impactful scene, conveyed with virtually no dialog. It’s the only SRK movie I’ve watched twice in a theater, with my husband who gladly accompanied me:-)

    Jug – He stole the show for me, this was one of his very best. He was effortlessly charming, professional, all while being oh-so-swoon-worthy!

    Gaurav – SRK is right. He really left no stone unturned. His best is on display here. As Gaurav he stuns you, fascinates you. Spellbinding performance. Cheated out of a National Award.

    Raees – He became the character for me. Right from the start, there was an edge and an unpredictability to his performance. He was scary good.
    Rahul in Darr – He was obsession personified. I was actually scared of him. He was that good.
    Sunil – My favourite boy-next-door character of his. Made my heart ache for him, and wanted him to get the girl even if she doesnt deserve him. In which world does one pick Tijori over SRK?

    Rizwan – I appreciated his performance anew when I recently re-watched MNIK. What an amazing portrayal! For someone who doesn’t cry in the film, he sure made me cry buckets. His innocent question “When can I come back Mandira” ripped my heart into shreds.

    Suri – Such a decent man, so soft-spoken. For the first half, I wasn’t sure I was watching SRK. I wonder how he does it. I wanted to shake Tani into loving him.

    Don – The swagger, the attitude, the walk. Enough Said. I may be one of the few people who doesn’t remember AB in the original Don. Don is SRK for me.

    Veer – There was such goodness to his character. He was so loyal, steadfast, and an all round gentleman. Didn’t think twice before scarificing his life for the woman he loves. Sigh! Ideal son/Partner/Soldier/Lover.

    Devdas – I appreciated his performance years later. He was brilliant as the affection starved son. Some scenes between As-SRK in the latter half were briliantly acted and directed. Even his arrogance was endearing. His need to be loved was radiating in each and every scene of the film. I vastly prefer SRK over Dilip Kumar in this role.

    Best Co-Stars

    Female:

    Kajol – They are magical together, and the news that they may come back together in a Kjo film has made my day, and I’m grinning like a fool at work ever since! They have this Romeo-Juliet thing going for them. Sweet, Pure, Innocent. They light up the screen together. They make me smile. Literally warms up my heart to see them together.
    I would kill to see them in something more matured, like JHMS from Kjo.

    Anushka – I don’t think I can ever get over their roles in JHMS. I will watch anything with them in it together. They are such a beautiful fit. Both very natural actors, and have a very different chemistry than Kajol-SRK.

    Gayatri Joshi – They had a fantastic chemistry in Swades. The Dhoti scene in particular sparkles. They were a great match both intellectualy, and physically.

    Juhi – I adored them in Yes Boss, and think she looks ever more gorgeous paired with SRK.

    Priety Zinta – I adore them together. I love the fact that she seems totally enamoured by SRK weather off screen or on screen.

    Farida Jalal – I hope she can be his onscreen mom in every film!

    Kiron Kher – My second favourite Onscreen mom of SRK. they are hilarious together..

    Male:
    Nawazuddin – Their chemistry in Raees was positively dripping with tension.
    Saif Ali Khan – Best bro chemistry there ever was. They were a riot both on screen in KHNH and off.
    Anupam Kher – Loved their father-son bond in DDLJ. They share a very warm and affectionate vides..

    Best Songs (unable to rank!)
    Every single song from JHMS. Yaadon Mein haunts me to this day.
    Maula Mere from Chake De India. Gives me goosbumps everytime I hear it. I’ve never heard such moving lyrics to describe a man’s love for his country.
    Dance Pe Chance from RAb Ne
    Ae Kash Ke Hum from KHKN. Really – how can anyone ignore him in this song?
    Kal Ho Na Ho title track – Visually stunning
    Mitwa from KANK

    • AAAA! I didn’t know about the Karan-SRKajol rumors! I don’t know if I believe them. I believe that Karan and Kajol have patched up, because it sounds pretty confirmed. But any time they are in a room together, we get film rumors, and they aren’t confirmed. On the other hand, this would be a good time for it. I feel like after the dwarf movie, SRK doesn’t have anything super super on hand, like already in pre-production. And Kajol just has Motherhood as her project. And Karan of course can hand over the reigns of Dharma to someone else for a bit any time he feels like doing a film. So yeah, if this is a thing, it could start filming as soon as, like, March.

      Moving on, love your description of wanting to shake Taani into loving him. Suri is so wonderful, and we in the audience can see it, but Taani just has to take her own sweet time getting there.

      Thank you for reminding me of Gayatri Joshi! She was so great, I really wish she had been in more films. But I am grateful that at least we got her in this one.

      Agree with all your song choices, except for Dance Pe Chance, which just doesn’t work for me. But I love Mitwa from KANK, and I am thrilled that I am not alone in that.

      • I’ve seen the KJO-SRK-Kajol trio news in more articles for the past couple of days now. Hope against hope it only stars SRKajol, and not his usual Alia/Ranbir/Varun. No offence, she’s a good actress, but I need a break from the Alia love. Also, Ranbir deserves our full attention, which is just not possible when he is sharing screen space with SRK. When there is SRKajol on screen, one rarely notices anyone else. Atleast that is true for me. I have this funny feeling there may be a big announcement on his birthday! I can’t help it, I just love these three together. after MNIK, I fully trust Kjo to make a matured story. There are so many good ideas!

        • That was the problem with Dilwale, for me. Nothing wrong with the other storylines, but SRKajol was so potent, that it felt like we were just marking time when they weren’t onscreen. Which was also unfair to all the other actors, to set them up to fail like that.

          I would love to see SRKajol in something with Karan that is more like ADHM. Firmly character based, mature love story, from a mature filmmaker.

          • What I found surprising about Diwale (apart from how anyone, Rohit, could have considered it a ‘comedy’, and yes, I’m aware it’s on my list!) was how flat Kajol’s scenes were when she was on her own/away from SRK. In other films, she can carry a scene as well as anyone, but here, it just didn’t work. But when she was with him, it turned into a different film entirely.

            I’m not blaming her at all, it seemed to be a direction issue, but it really did feel like the whole film was filler between the SRK scenes.

          • There was some talk around the release about how Kajol was “nervous” and “scared” and Shahrukh really helped her through stuff like the song choreography. And you can kind of see that, there is a lot more real leading in the dance numbers than he would normally do. Anyway, I wonder if she just felt uncertain on set? Her first film back after a long maternity leave, a director she had never worked with before, and Shahrukh made her feel comfortable in a way she wasn’t in the other scenes.

          • Ah thanks – must have missed that during the promotion. But yes, that explains a lot. it’s prominent in the BTS stuff how much he is supporting Kajol which was a little confusing: There’s the Janam Janam video where ‘Shai Bhai’ is very much leading her through it even though he’s injured, the set video where she realised that he had memorised both his lines and hers so he could help her through the scenes, and even in the Varun/Kriti interviews they stated that he kindly warned them about Kajol’s erm…’nervousness’ so they wouldn’t take it personally ;-). It seemed like he was doing his usual bauji/over-protectiveness thing on set – but actually, it sounds like it was needed.

          • Maybe the biggest flaw of the film was rushing Kajol into this comeback with a director she wasn’t familiar with? She has such a phenomenal career behind her with a whole variety of talents, but it would have been very different coming back to this world after so long away and being expected to deliver a film-carrying performance. Rohit Shetty seems like he has a very laidback and party kind of atmosphere on set, which wouldn’t necessarily help a nervous actress who felt the need for a lot of direction and guidance.

  9. Hmmm….performance rankings. Really difficult category because he systematically makes all films better because of his presence IMO: He either makes poor films watchable, mediocre films good, and good films amazing. Even in appearances, such as Tubelight, his 5 minutes was better than the rest of the film put together (and even I’m not sure how he managed that given he had nothing to work with but hey, there he was, turning up being all kinds of magnetically ethereal and powerful!).

    And it’s difficult to distinguish between those categories for ranking purposes: From a performance perspective, does making a bad film watchable rank lower than making a good film amazing? I can’t decide, but it probably shouldn’t do.

    But anyway, here is my ranking (based on my mood at the moment rather than any unmovable belief) but I guess the thing that unites these performances are where I completely forget it’s him as I do in almost all of his films. I watch a lot of films from across the world and have for decades, but he’s the only actor who I never see ‘perform’, I always believe in the person he wants me to see.

    1. Aryan/Gaurav – probably the bravest and most complex performance I’ve ever seen an actor do. I was wondering if it was going to go down the Fight Club route at one point, or even Harry Kellerman from the 70s, but so glad it didn’t, although there were prominent shades of that at the end.
    2. Raees [I know I stand alone here proudly with this!] – also hugely brave for different reasons, but in the wrong hands, this character would have been terrible. As it was, he portrayed a fundamentally good human raised in bad circumstances brilliantly well.
    3. My Name is Khan – For me, the start of SRK as an actor in a different league.
    4. Samar Anand & Suri (I can’t separate out these two in terms of performance quality, although they are very different. I haven’t put Raj because that’s Suri acting out his frustrations with his own limitations, rather than a character in his own right).
    5. Dr Jug/ Harry (not ranked at 5 for any bad reason, but again, I couldn’t decide between the two). Dr Jug is probably one of the most together and least overtly vulnerable characters he has played, but there are still hints of pain and loneliness in there, which is exceptional. You get what you need about the character without knowing anything materially about him – which is amazing for a supporting role.

    Special mentions go to:
    Dilwale (Yes I know, but that definitely falls into ‘poor film>watchable’ category; Just imagine the Shetty-induced car wreck had he not been in it). Also, I’m just realising how many on my list involve him having a beard.
    Paheli (Mediocre>Good): He’s always great in double-roles, and he manages to give both of his characters a sympathetic arc.

    Shallow Mention:
    K3G – not because it’s a groundbreaking piece of cinema, but whereas your SRK ‘moment’ came on the DDLJ Platform as he was saying goodbye to Kajol, my ‘Oh god I’m in trouble here’ moment came at the start of Yeh Ladka Hai Allah where he was dancing in sync with the others, then dropped the dancing and strolled for a few moments, then casually and perfectly fell back into sync with a grin on his face. So this is a sentimental favourite for me. Although on a performance front: He had to convince the audience that he was loved more than the Raichand’s real son (And worthy of it) – and yes, he did that effortlessly. But I usually end up FF’ing most of the film apart from key scenes.

    I’ve just realised that none of the usual celebrated performances are on this list. So somewhere in my warped mind, Diwale is worth a mention but Chak De, Swades and DDLJ are not? Hmmm! But seriously, can’t think of a single bad performance. I think I just prefer his more recent work when it comes to looking at performances because he’s mastered both his talent and craft.

    • Well, you just made me go rewatch Yeh Ladka Hai Allah! And here it is in case anyone else feels the need:

      What I really love about it is that it is also Farah in the background knowing that Shahrukh could pull that off. She needed him to appear from the back of the crowd, but move to the first line of the chorus in order to be in the right place for the next shot. So rather than fancy editing tricks or anything, she just had him do the first move, drop out and walk forward, and then do the next move. Because he can pull it off in a way that makes it look natural, confident, perfect. Instead of just a clunky work around choreography. So it makes me love the character’s confidence, and also the actor’s.

      • Yep – that’s exactly what got me. Completely a choreographed move for continuation purposes, but it did look so natural, right for the character and just the right amount of charm and dimpled cockiness as it was acted out in those few seconds. He knew what he was doing ;-).

        Strange moment to pinpoint I know, but hey, he gets us all in different ways!

        And yes, kudos to Farah (which I don’t often give, given that her directing vision doesn’t go far beyond ‘Let’s see how many different ways we can get Shah Rukh in a wet/no shirt in a glamorous location’. Not that there’s anything wrong with that……)

        • Farah and her cousin Farhan are kind of similar to me in that they are extraordinarily talented in one area, and good in other areas, and they keep wasting time with the stuff they are just “good” at instead of the stuff they are amazing at. Farah should do more choreography and less everything else, and Farhan should do more directing/writing and less everything else.

    • One thing I am really enjoying in all these responses is that you can trace people’s favorites because of how they recur, but also the random oddities. Songs and co-star from Veer-Zaara, but not the performance or character. Character from JTHJ but nothing else.

  11. Dilwale worked in part due to SRK, Kajol. The direction was abysmal for the most part. Varun Dhawan and Kriti deserved way better than this. The overall storyline had so much promise. The dialogues were cringe-worthy for the most part. And there were way too many secondary characters, and mundane plotlines.

    • As I have said before, Dilwale is a great movie if you can fastforward. Same goes for Happy New Year. I’ve watched both now on Netflix in a nice little 90 minute edit, and they are super fun. There’s a really good movie in there, buried under all the other stuff. Of course, then Shahrukh switched gears and made Fan and Jab Harry Met Sejal which are just perfect movies start to finish with nothing to fast-forward, and the audience hated them, so I don’t know what he should be doing.

  12. Absolutely agreed! That’s why I can’t understand why some folks haven’t watched 5 or 10 of his movies because they “weren’t interested.” My overarching philosophy is “if Shahrukh felt this movie was worth 3-6 months of his life to make, then there will be something worthy of my time in watching it.

  13. Uff – better late than never! 🙂 I will start with his co-stars because I already did those:
    Anushka, Rani, and Kajol are my top 3. They simply have something special for me that puts them above everybody else. Next in line are Madhuri, Deepika, Preity, Juhi… .

    • Wow, is this the first Dil Se Re mention? did I forget it in my own post? Because I love that song, after many many watches, I think in some ways it is better than Chaiyya Chaiyya. Certainly has more pure emotion to it.

      • I love it too! (obvously ;)) It’s such a beautiul song. A.R. Rahmans voice is so perfect, the melody and these wonderful poetic lyrics… sigh… and then the video… Shahrukh and Manisha are so good in it. It’s so gloriously shot, shows Amars love and at the same time forshadows the rest of the movie. For me it’s still A.R. Rahmans best album.

        And “Tu Mere Saamne” anyone? I love that the villain gets his own love song (beside Jaadu Teri Nazar) and then there is what Sharukh brings to it. Everytime I watch it now I’m all “yes – show them how it’s done!” after watching and suffering through the Sunny Deol Switzerland songs (sorry Sunny but even after all those years it still looks unimpassioned and weird) But then Shahrukh comes and boom – fireworks!

        • Darr is so great for comparing old and new style heroes, Shahrukh with the super romantic attitude, and Sunny with the aggressive macho that never seems to really connect with the heroine.

  14. This is so difficult, such a struggle to eliminate some of them. I am a late arrival to SRK fandom so I am more inherently in tune with his later movies, like 2000+. I believe he looks better and better as he ages, such good genes/jeans.

  15. Oh, you asked for it Magaret. This took me a while, and it;s gonna be long.

    Having watched all of his 80-plus films at least twice, most recently in chronological
    order, I was already thinking along these lines, so it was just the push I needed.

    (These are my favorites, not necessary the “best” from a critical point of view.)

    I started with a list of all his films, including friendly appearances and cameo roles, and then eliminated the films I don’t want to see again. That left me with 44 films. (The “never again films” include a fair number that I would view selectively — just the second half, just a song or two.) Then I eliminated the films I would want to own. (Also known as the films I would miss if they disappeared from Netflix.)

    Twenty-three! The list is still too long! So I sorted out the films that were my favorites in three or four of the other four categories, and separated them by how many “favorites” they had. Then I consulted my heart and same up with my final top ten list. Here is my final ranking:

    Performances

    This was the hardest, simply for the reason that Shah Rukh Khan never, ever phones it in, no matter how thin the role (Guddu) or how short (his cameo in Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega). I ended up picking the ones that I love because I always discover something new in his performance, no matter how often I watch, or because they represent an artistic risk that paid off.
