This is one of my least popular, and most difficult, blog series. It’s hardcore analysis, social and shot by shot and narrative and history of the film industry and history of India and everything I have ever learned all in one place. I am up to section 20 now, and 100 screen shots, and I am barely past intermission. But I thought I should probably just put together an index post to make it easy for latecomers to catch up. And hopefully get a few more readers to justify the amount of effort I am putting in!
Prologue:
I started by going through all the SRKajol films shot by shot, so before I even got to DDLJ, I had already done Karan-Arjun and Baazigar.

Okay, prologue over! Time for the main event. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, the most important film since Sholay, perfectly constructed, perfectly performed, perfect in every way, which takes many many words to explain.

Thanks, this is really helpful! I haven’t read the Baazigar analysis before so I want to check that out too 🙂

Baazigar and Karan-Arjun are kind of early own, they are a lot less intense than DDLJ. But then, maybe that makes them better!

Hey, I think your Part 20 DDLJ link is broken here. Or is it just me?

No, I think I changed the title of the post after I put in the link, so it broke. Anyway, it is fixed now!

Hey,
I just wanted to say thank you for the incredible amount of effort and time you are putting into these scene by scene analyses. Not only is your breakdown extremely enjoyable, as I am reading through these, I am thinking – “Exactly! That’s how I felt.” or “Finally SOMEONE WHO IS ALSO AS OBSESSIVE ABOUT THIS MOVIE AS I AM” and “oh my God, I haven’t eever thought of it like that before”.
There are places where you have pointed out something I haven’t noticed (and I watch DDLJ three times a day, at least; seriously – sometimes I do household chores with it playing in the background. I have ruined 3 DVD discs.)
Anyway, I just wanted to say I am really enjoying your description and analyses, and I really hope you continue and complete your analysis for DDLJ. (I am particularly looking forward to your take on the Karva Chauth scene, or even Simran taping her fingers during the engagement) I really want to hear your commentary on Mandira Bedi’s character, and how Raj treats her.
OH GOD I AM FANGIRLING SO HARD ON YOUR BLOG !!
Thank you so much!

So glad you are enjoying them! And that you appreciate the work that goes into them. Someone asked me a while back why I do so few, it takes me about 5 hours minimum to write one of this posts, with screenshoting images and double-checking dialogue and everything before I even start the analysis. So it’s hard to keep going, when I know not that many people are reading them.
But you have inspired me! I am out of screenshots, so I can’t do anything now, but maybe tonight I will sit down and start the screenshot and translation process, so I can do the actual writing over the weekend, and have some posts to go up next week.
In the meantime, I am trying to write a post on Pardes. Which, like Pardes the movie and DDLJ the movie, will be similar to DDLJ posts, but not quite as good.
