It’s a combination of the no spoiler and spoiler reviews I originally posted, and also I got very excited about the spoiler review and it was already super long even before I combined the two. So if you loved loved loved this movie, enjoy! And if you just love over-analysis, enjoy! And if neither of those things are true, skip!

Part 1 came out yesterday, moving right along to part 2. This isn’t a real “scene by scene”, not the way I have done it in the past with every line and every shot considered. This is more a summary of the film with some minor discussion, similar to what I did for Bajirao. (full index of summary here)
Not a full scene by scene, more just a detailed plot summary with occasional tangents. But still interesting! And longish. Oh, and I also threw in my initial think piece about Orientalism and my “no spoilers” review.
This is a tricky one, on the one hand there is so much in it that I really want to go through step by step and make sure I don’t miss anything. On the other hand, there isn’t enough in it (and I don’t want to spend so much time) for me to do a “real” scene by scene, shot by shot, style discussion. So I’m gonna do kind of a half one. Sort of like I did for Bajirao. Go through everything that happened, but not in super detail. (no spoiler review is here)
Well, this turned into a whole thing! I started just wanting to establish Amrish’s character journey at this part in the film, and I just ended up going on and on until it went way beyond the usual Scene By Scene and turned into a screed on the tragedy and trauma of the immigrant (full index of DDLJ posts here)
It only took a month, but I have now finished “Mehndi Laga Ka Rakna”! There’s really a lot in that song, much more than in the other ones. It’s also, I think, only fully “real” song, even “Ruk Ja” feels like it has some fantasy in there, and certainly all the other songs are a mix of real and not-real. (full index of DDLJ coverage here)

Am I forgetting something? If I’m not forgetting something, that is even more reason to appreciate it, that this is the last glorious burst of song before the rest of the movie plays out.
