Hindi Film 101: A Tubelight Theme, India and China
Happy Tuesday! Tubelight will be coming out soon, and I thought it might be helpful to review the history of Indo-Chinese relations. At least, the little I know about them. (yes yes, I will get back to the Nehru-Gandhi’s, probably on Thursday)
India and the Oscars: Why do they never, ever, EVER win?
Oscar time again! And once again, I have seen basically none of the nominees. And I especially haven’t seen the foreign film nominees. And nor has anyone else. I don’t mean that they don’t play widely in America, for the most part the kind of films that get an Oscar nomination do pretty well in the art theaters around the country. But they don’t play around the world. Hollywood, Hong Kong, and India are objectively and demonstrability the most watched film industries in the world (with maybe Korea and Nigeria just barely beginning to give them a run for their money), and only one of them ever makes it to the Academy Awards. But I actually think there are some reasonable reasons for that. Not good, but reasonable.
(Mother India is, of course, the closest India has ever come to wining. Lost by a hair to Nights in Cabiria. Stupid Fellini)
Happy Chinese New Year! How Does Indian Film Celebrate?
Indian film has a very complicated relationship with China, reflecting India’s complicated relationship China. To help understand it, in honor of this holiday, here is a nice story followed by 5 examples of not so great film moments. Fun!
Alan Rickman: The Linchpin Between Different Cinematic Worlds
Alan Rickman is dead! I am very upset. Not personally and emotionally, like I will be if Anil Kapoor or Jackie Shroff or Anupum Kehr dies. Or like I was, when Amrish Puri dead (I was in college, and the news spread through the dorms like wildfire). But as a film watcher, I am upset. Because he was really good, and really eclectic, in his film choices. He challenged himself, and worked with interesting people on interesting projects. If Alan Rickman was in a film, you know that you could expect a certain level of quality and originality.
More importantly, he was where multiple worlds of film met…
