I got off work at 4:30 for once instead of 5, meaning I could just barely make the 5 o’clock show, meaning it was fate that I go see Carbon, since it was the only one playing at 5 o’clock. And turns out, it’s not a great movie! I don’t mind that I had to wait 3 months after its release to see it.

Monday Malayalam: Hey Jude Finally Made it to American Movie Theaters!
I got to see Nivin onscreen! It was so EXCITING!!! And it wasn’t a bad movie this time, unlike Richie. And also Trisha, who I think I have seen in more movies than Nivin even, but never on the big screen. So that was exciting too.
Monday Malayalam: Ennum Eppozhum, Mohanlal and Manju Reunited
This was a nice movie! Not a great movie, the plot kind of went up and down and all around, but a very pleasant movie. The kind of sunshine and nice people movie that the Malayalam industry does not quite like anywhere else. And which was perfect to watch on an overcast late winter day in Chicago.
Monday Malayalam: Aadhi Review (SPOILERS), Lots of Sparkle No Soul
You can probably read this review even if you haven’t seen the film. There are a few plot twists, but it is the action and chase scenes that make the film the film stand out, and reading spoilers won’t give you the sense of those. Or satisfy your curiosity about seeing Mohanlal’s son onscreen.
Monday Malayalam: Aadhi Review (No Spoilers), Nepotism Perks and Parkour
Another Malayalam film in theaters! I braved the cold, and left the dog home alone for 8 hours, and it was kind of worth it. Not super worth it, but not horrible. If nothing else, it was nice to feel warm for 3 hours watching a movie in Kerala.
Monday Malayalam: Ingane Oru Nilapakshi, the Poor Girl and the Rich Girl Love Triangle With a New Angle
Well, this was a pleasant enough film! I was looking for something a little old-fashioned on Hotstar, and this popped up. And I just can’t say no to Kunchako.
Monday Malayalam: Godha, a Snow White in Kerala
This film FINALLY made it’s way to einthusan. And it is just as wonderful as Angie promised me. Not as spectacularly well-made and imaginative as Ohm Shanti Oshaana, but that same totally satisfying feel of a female protagonist going after what she wants and getting it in a completely happy way. Everyone happy, really.
Monday Malayalam: Munthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol, the Artificial Divisions Between “Love” and “Marriage”
I watched this movie in a self-serving grab for views, knowing it was popular last year and therefore a lot of people would have seen it and want to discuss it. And then, much to my surprise, I actually ended up enjoying the thing!
Monday Malayalam: Mosayile Kuthira Meenukal, the Perfect Use of Underwater Photography
This is a film that was recommended in the comments last Monday, after I admitted to an affection for Asif Ali. A fascinating film, about big fish and little fish and swimming with the water and seeing what is underneath.
Monday Malayalam: Sunday Holiday, A Pleasant Timepass
Well, this was a nice little movie! Which is what I was looking for, a nice happy sunshiney Malayalam movie to watch while it was freezing cold outside. Oh, and also, Asif Aslam was in it, and I like him.
Ohm Shanthi Oshaana Second Review: Puts the Focus On the Heroine For Once
Bangalore Days and Premam both got second reviews, might as well complete the trilogy and give OSO a second review too. Also it will be a nice little stop gap until my new Malayalam review goes up on Monday, now that family time is over and I am a sad orphan again who can spend her weekends watching movies (now I hear my parents saying “Hey! We live TWO MILES AWAY! She’s not an orphan!”). Anyway, life is back to normal is what I am saying, and my family has shrunk back down to normal size and my free time has expanded.
Monday Malayalam: Kakkothikkavile Appooppan Thaadikal, Finally a Movie Just About Sisters
Finally, a movie about sisters! No romance, hardly any parents, it’s all about the sister relationship. For once, it is the pain of separated sisters we feel, not lovers or brothers or parent and child.
Monday Malayalam: Nanthanam, Prithviraj Tries to Make an Impact Opposite 2 Heroines and a God
I did it, I watched Prithviraj’s first film! And I have to say, compared to Malavaardi Arts Club and Nivin and ABCD and Dulquer, it’s a lot less stomach churning. Mostly because he has a lot less to do, really it’s a movie about the 3 women, Navya Nair and Revathi and Kaviyoor Punnamma.
Monday Malayalam: Sahayathrikakku Snehapoorvam, Cute Set-Up and Failed Execution
See, this is what happens when no one is commenting, I get depressed and watch random not very good films. Although Kunchacko did his best to cheer me up. But that was countered by the heroine Kavya Madhavan, an actress I was really liking until I looked up who she was and learned she is (maybe) a terrible human being. But even so, I have to admit she did a wonderful job in this film. This very uneven film.
Monday Malayalam: Ozhivu Divasathe Kali/An Off-Day Game, A Beautifully filmed Dark Movie
This was a “well heck, it’s short!” movie watching decision. And it was, indeed, short. But otherwise not the kind of movie I would usually watch. Very film festival. Which is strange, because Malayalam films already are kind of film festival-y, but this is really really film festival-y.
Monday Malayalam: Aniyathipraavu, I Don’t Like It As Well As Niram
I watched it, because I loved Niram so much. And I just don’t love this one as much. It’s nice, it’s sweet, it’s way way better than some of the other Malayalam films I’ve seen from the same era. Or even today! But I don’t love it.
Monday Malayalam (on Tuesday): Niram is the 90s Romance I Didn’t Know I Needed
Oh man is this a cute cute cute cute cute movie! So happy and sweet and innocent and 90s. And clear plastic backpack-y. And it might now be my favorite Shalini rom-com, even nudging out Alaipayuthay.
Monday Malayalam (on Tuesday, I’m behind this week): Take-Off, Women Who Were Hostages Long Before They Were in a War Zone
I have been nagged by you nice people in the comments to watch this movie for I think a year now. And I finally did it!!!! Which means your nagging works, and you should keep it up.
Monday Malayalam: Njandukalude Nattil Oridavela Review SPOILERS, an Everyday Story Told in an Everyday Way
I’m back! For my full SPOILERS review, after the very very early Monday morning No Spoilers review. And I’m excited because there is a lot to talk about once I am allowed to spoil things!
Monday Malayalam: Njandukalude Nattil Oridavela No SPOILERS Review, a Nivin Pauly Movie that Isn’t About Nivin Pauly
Okay, it’s technically Monday. I am putting this up now! I saw the movie Friday and I’ve been holding off just so I could stay sort of on schedule. Anyway, there is another review coming later, the SPOILERS one.
Monday Malayalam: Namukku Parkkan Munthiri Thoppukal, a Very Light Romance in a Very Dark World
Well this was fun! A really really good romance, from back when Mohanlal was young and charming (versus now when he is old and charming). A good romance that took a progressively darker tone as it went on, but still somehow got through to a satisfying ending.
Monday Malayalam: Notebook, The Spoken Lesson is Different From the Shown Lesson
Yet another Hotstar miracle! I film I had been curious about because of Rosshan Andrews, the director, and which was impossible to find. Until suddenly it popped up! Right there, at my fingertips! The wonder of Hotstar.
Monday Malayalam: I Saw Solo! What an Interesting Experiment (No Spoilers Review)
Sorry! Padmavati took all my time yesterday, so we missed Monday Malayalam. And now I am doubling up on Tuesday, a no spoilers and a spoilers review, both, for Solo. Because it came out in Malayalam and Tamil, so I have decided it works for both.
Monday Malayalam: Chenkol, the Cycle Breaks with a Sacrifice
I watched Kireedam months and months and months ago and now, FINALLY, I know how that story really ends.
Monday Malayalam: Avidathepole Ivideyum, I Am Still in Love With 80s Mohanlal
Oh young Mohanlal! Why are you so wonderful? One of my first Malayalam films was Aalkkoottathil Thaniye which is mostly a Mammootty film, but in his two scenes, Mohanlal stole the show for me. And now with them as equal actors, I am even more convinced that Mohanlal is the one for me. At least, in the 1980s. Haven’t made a decision yet for the other eras.
