This Weekend! Double Birthday! We can pick a movie in honor of either of them. But it has to be fairly accessible, and SUBTITLED. Remember, Hulu has no subs, so that’s like 95% of the Mohanlal options.

Iruvar Review Repost, In Honor of Prakash Raj’s Brithday and Jayalalithaa
Iruvar!!! It’s AWESOME!!! And as a bonus, I am going to explain Tamil politics very quick and dirty in the first paragraph. For those of you who enjoy that kind of thing.
Continue readingHappy Birthday Mohanlal! My Favorite Movie of Yours, Namukku Parkkan Munthirithoppukal
This is such a lovely movie. Poor quality, the only copy available seems to be a bit deteriorated. But you can still feel the reality of the beauty of the world around them. And most of all, the story is so beautiful, hope and love over terrible damage.
Continue readingValentine’s Week of Sex: Namukku Parkkan Munthirithoppukal
This is a movie that is all about sex, without actually having a sex scene. Sex fantasies, sex experimentation, and sexual violence (nothing explicitly shown, but discussed and treated seriously by the plot). And it is also a movie about love and redemption and freedom. It’s just lovely.
Continue readingMonth of SRK: 17 Southern Films I Would Remake with Shahrukh
Well, this will be a very boring post for those of you who aren’t familiar with southern movies! Although I will also try to give a brief plot summary so you can see why I think they would work well for him.
Continue readingSilly Sunday Fanfic: A Spooky One! Horror Films for Indian Movies, Starring Tovino and Shahrukh
I know India has a somewhat thriving horror business now, and horror films are definitely not my genre (I have seen three), but it’s Halloween week, so it seemed appropriate.
Kayankulam Kochunni Review (SPOILERS): If the Laws Are Unjust, You Need Not Respect Them
Such a great movie! I was smiling and laughing in delight the entire time. If you will have a chance to watch it, you can read the No Spoilers review, if you already know the whole story, or won’t be able to see the film, you can read this one. It’s fun to watch not knowing what will happen next, but it’s also fun to watch knowing everything, it’s just that good.
Kayamkulam Kochunni Review (No Spoilers): A Good Old Fashioned Adventure Movie
We skipped Helicopter Eela and saw this instead, and it was such a good decision! I recommend you do the same.
Monday Malayalam: Spirit, Stopping Your Addiction Doesn’t Mean You Get Back Everything You Have Lost
I did it! I managed to write a Monday Malayalam post after all! I am The Master!!!!! Now we have to see if I manage to write a box office post tomorrow or if that is just too much.
Random Saturday Discussion Post: Stars versus Their Younger Selves! Who Aged Better and Who Aged Worse?
This came up in a discussion on Friday’s post, the unquestionable truth that Shahrukh looks better the older he gets. And then the challenge became, what other stars aged into better looks than in their youth?
Mani Ratnam Takes on MGR!!! Iruvar, His Most Political Film
I was watching this movie so closely! So closely! I know the drill with Ratnam films, he just drops in these little bits and then moves on so you can’t look away for a second. And yet, I was still completely lost. But I don’t think it’s my fault! Or at least, not my fault because I wasn’t watching closely enough, but because I didn’t have the expected background.
Kerala Floods Report/Donation
We get so much joy out of Kerala films, we really should give more back to those whose culture and society has helped create them.
TGIF: World Elephant Day, People With/On Elephants
My sister’s visiting, I’m feeling lazy, and it’s World Elephant Day on Sunday. So that’s as good a reason as any to look at people with elephants, right?
Tuesday Tamil: Iruvar Review Repost, in Honor of Karunanidhi
I reviewed this movie ages ago, and I am not an expert on Tamil history or society or even film. So in honor of Karunanidhi’s passing, this is the best I have to offer.
Monday Malayalam: Nokketha Doorathu Kannum Nattu, The Safety of Denial
Look, I watched an actual good movie! A classic even. It just took all of you listing off the good movies for me on HotStar so I could avoid their gosh awful search function and go directly to what I wanted.
Monday Malayalam: Kilukkam, a Happy Malayalam Movie!!!! How is This Possible?????
I can’t believe it!!!! An actual happy Malayalam film! Or maybe I have just been worn down in my definition of “happy”, so that it now expands to accept illegitimate children, forced commitments to insane asylums, kidnapping, sibling murder, and so on. But hey, it doesn’t end with the heroine being raped and/or the hero being arrested, or a sad song in the rain, so HAPPY. (you understand I kid because I love, right? Malayalam movies are beautiful and brilliant but MAN can they be depressing sometimes!)
Monday Malayalam: Ennum Eppozhum, Mohanlal and Manju Reunited
This was a nice movie! Not a great movie, the plot kind of went up and down and all around, but a very pleasant movie. The kind of sunshine and nice people movie that the Malayalam industry does not quite like anywhere else. And which was perfect to watch on an overcast late winter day in Chicago.
Monday Malayalam: Aadhi Review (No Spoilers), Nepotism Perks and Parkour
Another Malayalam film in theaters! I braved the cold, and left the dog home alone for 8 hours, and it was kind of worth it. Not super worth it, but not horrible. If nothing else, it was nice to feel warm for 3 hours watching a movie in Kerala.
Monday Malayalam: Munthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol, the Artificial Divisions Between “Love” and “Marriage”
I watched this movie in a self-serving grab for views, knowing it was popular last year and therefore a lot of people would have seen it and want to discuss it. And then, much to my surprise, I actually ended up enjoying the thing!
TGIF: Cuddly Men
Happy first TGIF post after Shahrukh month! And it will be (almost) Shahrukh free! Because he isn’t always “cuddly”. In the “teddy bear” kind of way.
Monday Malayalam: Namukku Parkkan Munthiri Thoppukal, a Very Light Romance in a Very Dark World
Well this was fun! A really really good romance, from back when Mohanlal was young and charming (versus now when he is old and charming). A good romance that took a progressively darker tone as it went on, but still somehow got through to a satisfying ending.
Monday Malayalam: Chenkol, the Cycle Breaks with a Sacrifice
I watched Kireedam months and months and months ago and now, FINALLY, I know how that story really ends.
Monday Malayalam: Avidathepole Ivideyum, I Am Still in Love With 80s Mohanlal
Oh young Mohanlal! Why are you so wonderful? One of my first Malayalam films was Aalkkoottathil Thaniye which is mostly a Mammootty film, but in his two scenes, Mohanlal stole the show for me. And now with them as equal actors, I am even more convinced that Mohanlal is the one for me. At least, in the 1980s. Haven’t made a decision yet for the other eras.
Monday Malayalam: Narasimham! Thilakan FINALLY Gets His Comeuppance!
Welp, I did it, I finally watched Narasimham. And it was pretty much as expected. Not exactly what I look for in my Malayalam films, but Mohanlal was there, and so was Mammootty for a bit, and now I have seen Most Successful Movie of All Time, or whatever the accurate superlative is.
Monday Malayalan: Bharatham, The Responsibility of the One Left Behind
Well, I’m back to the classics! Because Bharatham starts with a “B” and therefore was next on my DVD shelf after ABCD. And also because I was in the mood for something thought provoking and good, and I knew this one would be.
