This is such a fun one to write! Mostly because it is so fake. Rekha is brilliant at manipulating the press and crafting an image for herself, so her whole life story (as presented to the public) sounds like something out of a bad melodrama. Oh, and almost all of this is based on This Book, which is a super fun read and if you like this post, you should go buy it and read it.

Female Films Week: Umrao Jaan, the Homelessness of the Courtesan
I finally watched it! And it was sad, as expected, but also mesmerizing in a way I didn’t anticipate. Such a careful world that is created.

What an interesting death to wake up to. Someone who was very very old and revered but also a little bit forgotten. And now I, and everyone else, am inspired to learn about and write about him.
Continue reading100 Years of Indian Film History in 10 Songs
Well, enough avoiding, time to do songs. Music is NOT my area. I have never studied music history seriously at all, and more importantly, I am next door to tone deaf. I can enjoy music. But on a very very very superficial level. Like someone who looks at a beautiful sunset and sees it as 3 simple stripes of red orange and yellow. That’s me! Happy Birthday J.P Dutta! Famous Director of War Films, Born One Day After Gandhi!
Almost missed this one! Which isn’t that big of a deal, JP Dutta is important but not THAT important. Only, I really really love LOC Kargil (check out my two part post of favorite quotes!), and I am pretty fond of Refugee too. So I might as well scrape up a half dozen or so reasons to celebrate and love him on his birthday.
Happy Birthday Naseeruddin Shah!!!!
It’s Naseerji’s birthday! How wonderful! His career is so long and so impressive, I don’t think I can possibly hope to do justice to it in one post. So I am going to do the best I can and if I miss something, just mention it in the comments and maybe I will put it in for next years post! Anyway, here are 26 reasons for now, for the age he was in his first movie.
