Ready for a silly SILLY post? It occurred to me that Shahrukh and Fred Astaire have many of the same situations in their song sequences. And then it occurred to me that we could compare and contrast!Continue reading
These are not the greatest musicals of all time, or even my favorites. These are more just really interesting ones I think more people should see and which aren’t that famous. And be warned, it is a loooooooooooooooong list. And there’s lots more I am going to remember and wish I could add, but won’t, because it already too long.Continue reading
I was gonna do a “Margaret’s list” and then I realized before I do a “Margaret’s List”, I should get the “normal list” out of the way. And then the post suddenly got to long so I am splitting them in too. If you want a quick intro to the broad sweep of American musical films, here are all the super important ones in chronological order. And PLEASE, my fellow film musical nerds, start an argument with me in the comments!!!! I have OPINIONS. On EVERYTHING. (oh, and the more excited I am about a topic, the more typos I make. I am very very excited about this topic)Continue reading
I haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaate it when people say “oh, Indian movies, they are just like those classic American Musicals I loved”. Because they’re NOT!!!! But then, at the same time, they kind of are. Which is why I hate it when people say that because it’s a really really complicated argument to prove to them that they are being inaccurate and then they start slowly backing away from me and eventually I realize I have become a person alone in a room giving a lecture to nothing.Continue reading

This is one of those situations when I get SO FRUSTRATED with how everyone is going “WOW! Did you see this?” While I am going “Yes, when I was 5 years old…..Do you, like, never watch anything before 1980?”, and I just CAN’T TAKE IT ANY MORE!!!! So I am going to force you all to learn the basics of American musical/dance history on film, so you can better appreciate how that interacts with modern Indian film, and the occasional very very rare modern American musical.
I’m mourning today, like can’t stop crying, can’t find anything good in the world mourning. I was trying to think of the last time I felt like this, I think it was when my grandmother was dying, my grandfather had just died, my father was worried about losing his job, and my mother was recovering from major surgery (yes these things all happened at the same time). That was years ago, and the small piece of comfort I have today is that at least I have something that does bring me spiritual comfort, which I didn’t have then.
