Happy Shahrukh Week: DDLJ Part 10! Let’s Be in a Spin!

DDLJ Part 9!  Do you know Xeno’s paradox?  (I know it from using it as a game with small children back when I was tutoring.)  There is a tortoise and a hare.  The tortoise goes forward one whatever at a time (when I played it with kids, I’d usually use the floorboards of their living room, so one floorboard at a time).  The hare goes forward half the distance from where he is to the end of the race each time he moves forward.  So on the first turn, if you have 20 floorboards, the tortoise goes one floorboard and the hare goes 10.  And then on the second, the tortoise goes one and the hare goes 5.  And so on.  What I’m saying is, I am the hare, and I am never going to finish this recap, because each entry goes half as slow as the previous entry.

DDLJ Part 9: Who’s Right and Who’s Left?

Part 9!  I’ve gotten all the way to the barn scene!  Let’s see if I can make it to “Zara Se Jhoom” today, or if I’m going to end up breaking this into two parts.

DDLJ Part 8: In Honor of Fan Week, I’m Going to Pick It Back Up Again for a Bit! Also, Let’s Rent a Room in a House in Switzerland!

DDLJ!  4 months ago, I started trying to work through every SRKajol movie, I finished Baazigar and Karan-Arjun, and then hit DDLJ and suddenly I turned into that picky eater kid who takes 4 hours to finish a bowl of cereal.  I’m just savoring every single bite!  And moving forward at a rate of 2,000 words per every 5 minutes.

Rocky Handsome Full Summary!!! There’s Not Much to It (SPOILERS)

I posted a quick review without spoilers yesterday, I usually post another with spoilers discussing the plot in detail.  But in this case, there is so little plot, I might as well combine the spoiler-y review with the summary and get them both out of the way.

Kapoor and Sons: Full Summary Part 1 (SPOILERS, of course)

I’ve already put up to reviews, one short spoiler-less one and one that goes into detail about the character development and so on with loads of spoilers.  And now I am going to see if I can manage my usual extremely detailed scene by scene breakdown.  Not sure how it will go with this film, because it is so loose and experimentally structured.

(Final part of summary, with ending, here)

DDLJ Part 7: Driving, Walking, Finally Communicating

In case you couldn’t tell from the previous 6 posts, I really love this movie.  But I don’t think I fully appreciated it (even after writing multiple papers referencing it, reading a couple books, and every article out there), until I started this minute by minute breakdown.  It really is just perfectly constructed.

DDLJ Part 6: Shahrukh has Finally Had Enough! (Spoilers ensue, no duh)

Back before my Malayalam obsession kicked off, I was working through a full and detailed summary of every single SRKajol film.  After 5 parts, I had just made it about an hour into DDLJ (I really have a lot to say about this movie).  And then this week, I wasn’t able to watch a Malayalam film last night (church quilting group instead), and I wasn’t able to see Jai Gangaajal, so I can’t write a bunch of posts about that either.  So time to check in with DDLJ again!

Tere Bin Laden: Dead or Alive Full Summary! I Can’t Possibly Capture the Funny, But Trust Me, It Was Great! (Spoilers, of course)

This is not a good movie for a summary, because so much of it was in the delivery and the sight gags and so on.  But I will do my best!  More for people who already saw it and are trying to remember exactly how all the twists happened.

Neerja: Part 2! Through to the Ending! Very confusing, and very sad (Spoilers)

I posted the first half, up to intermission, already.  The second half is a little harder for me to remember in detail, some pieces kind of blurred together, or were purposefully repetitive.  But I will do the best I can.  And if I missed something important or put it in the wrong order, say something in the comments.

DDLJ Part 5: Paris! Stop, You Crazy Heart! Also, Qayamet Se Qayamet Tak!

In between other things, I am slowly making may way through a massive multi-part summary of all the SRKajol films.  I already did Karan-Arjun and Baazigar, and this whole thing was started with my summarizing Dilwale.  And now I have finally reached the pinnacle (suck it, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai fans!  I am saying DDLJ is better and you can’t stop me!)

DDLJ Part 4: Let’s Ride That Train! And Talk about Eve-Teasing!

I’m back!  After a couple of breaks for Ghayal and Saala Khadoos.  Just like if I can’t decide what to watch, I can always enjoy throwing in DDLJ, I can always toss in another part of this many many part series whenever there is nothing else going on (look for another break in a few days when I have to stop and cover Fitoor).

DDLJ re-watch Part 3! Let’s get on that train!

After having gotten through Baazigar and Karan-Arjun, which were both more fun and less SRKajol than I remembered,  I have finally reached the first real drop dead classic SRKajol film, DDLJ.  And, since it is a drop dead classic, I am moving through it very very slowly.  So much to think about with this one!

Saala Khadoos/Irudhi Suttru Full Summary First Half up to Interval! (Spoilers, doy)

I already posted a spoiler-free review, but if you aren’t able to see the movie, or have seen it and want a reminder of what happened, or are just curious about my opinion in detail, here is a complete scene by scene breakdown!

Ghayal Summary Through to the End! Get Ready for Ghayal Once Again!

I posted a summary of the first half yesterday, now it is time to bring it on home through to the end!  And the second half is where things get CRAZY.

And also crazy interesting from a statement on society perspective.  There is a long rant in the middle about social responsibility.  So that’s something for you to look forward too!

Ghayal Full Summary! So you can be ready for the sequel!

Ghayal Once Again comes out tomorrow!  I am not terrible optimistic about it.  But just in case it ends up getting great reviews and revitalizes Sunny’s career and all that, I thought you should all know more or less what happens in Ghayal.

I watched Ghayal, while also answering emails and doing dishes, about a week ago.  My memory may not be as good as usual, but I think I can remember the general details of most scenes, and some scenes I remember real well.  So, let’s see how I do, and if I can manage to do the whole thing in one post!

(UPDATE: Summary finished!  Read part 2 here)

DDLJ Part 2: Mere Kwabon Mein Jo Aaye!!!! (Oh, and also Spoilers, but you should just pull it up on Netflix and watch it if you haven’t seen it by now)

So, part one got a little deep and a little poetic about the meaning of the diaspora and male versus female life spaces and so on.  I will try very hard to keep it light with this one, but I don’t know if I can!  I think this is the first movie I’ve recapped here (except maybe Airlift?) that I think is legitimately deep, not just fun to watch.

So, onward!  To the one who comes in my dreams!

SRKajol rewatch reaches DDLJ FINALLY!!! (Spoilers, of course, but if you haven’t already seen this movie multiple times in the past 20 years, you have been wasting your life)

DDLJ!  Woo!  I can go off DVD with full confidence in my abilities!  Woop woop!  Although I may still re-watch it at some point just for joy and happiness.

Also, if you really want to learn about DDLJ, I cannot recommend this book highly enough.  I will be referring back to it constantly, and even when I don’t refer back specifically, just assume that Chopra’s theories are the underlying force behind everything I say.

(also, oh my god I love the header image I found!  Adi was such a dork.  Also, I am pretty sure that is actually from the sets of K2H2 based on the suit, but I don’t care, I’m still using it.  I may reuse it if I ever get to K2H2)

Baazigar Part 8: The End! And It’s GOOOOOOOD! Oh, and SPOILERS, whatever

Finally done with the boring pre-awesome movies!  I mean, Karan-Arjun and Baazigar are good all around movies, and they are also SRKajol movies in that Shahrukh and Kajol co-star.  But they aren’t SRKajol movies in the truest sense, that is, films which only exist because of their chemistry, which are crafted purely to highlight their connection, which go to a whole other realm of filmmaking because of that.  And also, they aren’t SRKajol movies in the sense that I don’t have them all perfectly memorized because I have watched them So. Many. Times.  So, next time!  DDLJ!  Very excited!

But for now, the best part of Baazigar!  Which isn’t even the final SRKajol scene (see what I mean about it not being a movie built around SRKajol?) but is actually the final fight scene!  Which is just ridiculous and also ridiculously entertaining.

Airlift: Part 4! The Ending! All the Way to the Finale! Complete! (Spoilers Are Here)

So, Airlift!  It took me 2 hours to watch it in the theaters and three days (so far) to describe it in print.  I have many many many thoughts.  This is not, like, the funnest summary I have written (if you want that, check out my almost completed Baazigar), but it is one that challenges me to have lots of interesting thoughts.  Because it is a film that was thoughtfully made.

Anyway, to finally get to the triumphal ending, Read On!

Baazigar Part 7: So close! Basically to the End Except for the Fight Scene! Also, “Kaali Kaali Ankhen”!

Almost done!  So excited!  You realize this had more parts than my Dilwale summary at this point?  Although I think that is because I am stretching it out so much, I think most Dilwale posts were about twice this long.

But this bit is the good bit!  Lot’s of SRKajol scenes, including “Kaali Kaali Ankhen”, leading all the way up to the Epic Fight Scene.  Oh, and someone wears a T-shirt that says “Der Shirt Shop.”

Airlift Full Summary, all Plot Spoilers: Part 3

As I said in my first two posts (here and here), this is a film that surprised me with it’s quality.  Which is part of the reason it is taking me 3 plus parts to finish it!  Unlike Wazir, which I knocked out in two (here and here if you are curious).

If you don’t want to be spoiled, but want a sense of what the film was like, you can read the review here.  If you have already seen it and want to know in detail what I thought, or if you are eager to be spoiled, Read On!
