Film Reviews

A Diwali gift for you!  I have finally put together an index of film reviews.  It only took 6 hours of clicking back and forth.  Such fun!

This list is in alphabetical order, sorted by language groups.  It is not exhaustive, there are other films I have mentioned in passing or written brief comparative essays on, which didn’t really fit here.  To find those, simply use the search box and look for the title.  There are also many films on this list for which I wrote multiple reviews.  Except for a few exceptions, I have linked back to the most comprehensive review and ignored the others.

    • No, it is not on purpose. And it doesn’t show up in the editable screen. Grr!

  1. Very busy you are…and the A to Z is a good idea 🙂 just thinking that you could make an A to Z for ALL films without distinguishing the language or region…it’s Indian films after all 🙂

    • I was so tempted to start cross-referencing and setting up sublists and trying different things! But for now I think I will keep it simple like this.

    • Thank you! Let me know if you see any more like that. I was just scrolling through this very very long list of title and I may have gotten confused a few times as to whether I was under the Tamil or Telugu or some other heading.

  2. Thank you for doing this! A testament to your cumulative accomplishments here. 🙂

Until now I’ve just been typing the movie title in the search box and hoping for the best, which doesn’t work if you don’t know how tho spell the tittle. Now you can at least eyeball it in the list.

Suggesting you put hyperlinks at the top of the page for each language/industry; e.g. if I click the Tamil hyperlink, it should take me directly down to the Tamil section of the page. You could line the hyperlinks up horizontally to minimize real estate impact. Besides helping your frequent visitors, it also lets your new visitors know that you cover all these industries.

    • I like this idea, but unfortunately have no idea how to add hyperlinks within a page. Something new to learn!

  3. Thank for this Margaret! I had no idea that you wrote about movies like Khoobsurat and SOTY 🙂

By the way, Geethanjali is a Telugu movie not Tamil. I’m assuming you that you put it in Tamil just because it was Mani Ratnam but Geethanjali is his only straight Telugu film.

    • I haven’t, someday. Maybe a Friday Classic. Shoot, I just promised to do a Friday classic on another film on another film that I have already forgotten. Maybe after that one.

  5. I have been lurking for a while and I am so amazed at your collection. I’m really happy to see someone showing more and more of Indian cinema. Before moving to the Middle East, I was limited to ‘bollywood’ and the very stereotypical view of indian film/culture. After befriending Punjabis, Tamils, and Keralites, I’ve learned a lot more. Now that I’m dating a Malayalee, I’ve been immersed in the films there.
If you don’t mind, I can recommend a couple I didn’t see listed:
    Malayalam:
Oru vadakkan veeragatha: Classic Mammooty playing a misunderstood villain from ancient folklore. Exciting fight scenes and epic storytelling
neelakasham pachakadal chuvanna bhoomi: Dulquer salmaan going across india on his bike looking for his love from Nagaland. politics, romance, coming of age
5 sundarikal: 5 short films from different directors. The first and fourth are my favorite.
    Tamil:
Hey Ram! Politics and riots in Calcutta leading to the radicalization of Kamal Hassan’s character. Set during the partition of India. SRK speaks Tamil. Long but engaging and terribly heartbreaking.
My list has gotten longer for sure 🙂

    • Thank you so much for commenting! I love new commenters.

I think the first two have been recommended to me before, the first when Veeram was coming out in particular. But I still haven’t gotten around to them. The last one I have seen, but I’m nerving myself up to deal with it!!! The politics are so sticky, you know?

Please keep commenting! Even if it’s just to say “oh, I loved this movie!” or “I’m having a bad day, this was a nice pick me up” or “her costumes were so beautiful in this”. I love comments!

  6. Hey ram is pretty sticky! We are planning to watch 22 female this weekend. And then I’m showing him the grand Budapest hotel. We swap mallu and English movies on weekends 😂
I’ll comment through the ones I’ve seen here (I’ll feel better about myself haha)

    Like

    • 22 Female is awesome!!!!! Really not what I expected, even knowing the whole plot in advance. That’s one of the things I love about Malayalam films, it’s not just about what happens, it’s about the details of how it happens.

Looking forward to reading your comments!

    • Thanks! Will fix. This list is so long, I can get lost in my scrolling and lose track of what language I am in.
