Happy Anniversary Aish and Abhi! I Hope Your Relationship in Real Life is as Good as in Guru and Kuch Naa Kaho!

I follow Amitabh on twitter (of course), and he mentioned today that it is Aish and Abhi’s wedding anniversary.  Congrats Aishwarya and Abhishek!  I have complicated feelings about your relationship (simple version: why no more babies?  I need more Bachchans in the world!), but I love love love you as a couple onscreen.  Specifically, in Kuch Naa Kaho and Guru (Sarkar Raj is a mess, and I haven’t seen Dhaai Akshar Prem Ki (has anyone?)).

Fan Full Summary/Recap (Spoilers of course): Part 2, Past the First Near Death Experience

The Fan box office continues to drop, by the way.  Which is making me feel a bit more relaxed about getting this summary done.  Usually I try to do it in 1,2, or 3 parts, 4 at the absolute most, and finishing by the Wednesday after the film is released.  But hey, no one but me is seeing Fan, so I might as well take my time and enjoy the experience!

Happy 420! Here are my Favorite Bhang songs!

I think this might be just an American thing, but 4/20 is traditionally a day to celebrate Marijuana.  There are a whole bunch of different versions of where it came from, but just accept that “420” in general is slang for marijuana, and therefore the date 4/20 has become a marijuana holiday.  Which means, I get to do a post of my favorite songs in which people are high!

Fan Full Summary/Recap! Part 1! Through the First Performance!

Okay, the movie has been out about 72 hours, and I have seen it 3 times.  I’m wasting my life!  That’s only 7 hours out of 72 that I spent watching it!  What is more important?  Sleep?  Food?  Work?  That’s crazy talk!  Anyway, after 3 viewings, I think I am ready to start my full detailed summary.

Fan First Weekend Box Office in Detail

More box office data!  The first meta bit of this, is that there is just SO MUCH data available.  Normally there is just one graph showing the global total for each film for a weekend.  But today, there are 6 different graphs just about Fan.  Clearly, people are really really watching this particular release.

Malayalam Film Review to Tide You Over Until Fan-Fever Passes

I feel bad, I know I have a lot of faithful readers who are more here for the regional stuff than the Hindi, and I’m not going to have time to watch another regional film for another few days, not until I’ve seen Fan several more times.  So I’m going to go ahead and post a review on a film I watched a while back and never covered here.

Where Did the Brilliance of Fan Come From? Or, “I think I Maybe In Love with Maneesh Sharma”

In one of my reviews of Fan, I mentioned that I couldn’t believe with the director or the writer listed in the credits were the people who really come up with the ideas, because they were just workmanlike Yash Raj studio directors, full of rom-coms and bright colors and songs and happiness.  But today an interview came out with Maneesh Sharma, and turns out, it was all  him after all!  And also, I may be a little bit in love.

What makes DDLJ so special? And why are so few other films that good? (It’s still Shahrukh’s Week!)

I was just writing about DDLJ, in my multi-multi-multi part DDLJ series, and E reminded me in the comments about how interesting Humpty Sharma is as a re-imagining of the film, which kind of made me want to talk about that a little.  And then I started to think about why Humpty Sharma works for me, and why a handful of other movies similarly remind me of DDLJ, and why others (including every other SRKajol movie), do not.

(moviemavengal just put up a similar post while I was writing this one!  Great minds think alike.  I co-sign on almost all of her choices.)

Shahrukh Week! Last Day! THANK GOD!!! 24 hours from now I will be sitting in a theater burbling with excitement (sorry in advance to the people sitting next to me) I only hope it is as good as Chak De, India!

Shahrukh himself is very open about how he doesn’t really “act” in most of his movies.  There are 4 that he consistently cites as performances he is actually proud of: Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa, Swades, Chak De, India, and My Name is Khan.  ICha’ll probably talk about all of these films at some point, but for Fan week, I want to talk about Chak De, because it shares the most with Fan.

DDLJ Part 12: Not nearly as exciting as Part 11, but still important!

Yesterday was the really really important scene, the one that it is worth going through shot by shot and line by line.  Today, some scenes that are still awesome, but not quite peak awesome.

Happy Fan Day (in India)!!! Reports from the front

Happy Fan Day!  The stupid distributors are being mean and stupid and not letting me go to a sneak preview tonight (like they did for Dilwale and Happy New Year, and even Prem Ratan Dhan Payo!  Come on, man!), so I have to wait until tonight to actually watch it.  But, in the meantime, I’ll be giving reports from the front as it comes in from the Indian websites.  Not reviews (who cares about those, right?), but box office sales.

(also, that header image is Shahrukh in London with his wax statue in Madame Tussaud’s which has been dressed up to look like Gaurav.  Creepy, right?)

Happy Shahrukh Week!!! 2 Days Left for Fan! To Kill the Time, Let’s Talk about Don!

I can always talk about Don!  Always always always!  It’s just such a brilliant movie in so many ways.  Shahrukh’s performance, of course, but also the script, and how it uses our knowledge of the original to support its underlying trickery.  Oh, and if you haven’t seen Shahrukh’s Don yet, DO NOT READ ON!!!!!  Just watch the movie instead.  Normally I don’t care about Spoilers, but oh my gosh, if you go into Don unspoiled, it is so awesome!

Happy Shahrukh Week: DDLJ Part 10! Let’s Be in a Spin!

DDLJ Part 9!  Do you know Xeno’s paradox?  (I know it from using it as a game with small children back when I was tutoring.)  There is a tortoise and a hare.  The tortoise goes forward one whatever at a time (when I played it with kids, I’d usually use the floorboards of their living room, so one floorboard at a time).  The hare goes forward half the distance from where he is to the end of the race each time he moves forward.  So on the first turn, if you have 20 floorboards, the tortoise goes one floorboard and the hare goes 10.  And then on the second, the tortoise goes one and the hare goes 5.  And so on.  What I’m saying is, I am the hare, and I am never going to finish this recap, because each entry goes half as slow as the previous entry.

Shahrukh Week: Fan and Om Shanti Om

4 more days left to Fan!  It’s TOO LONG.  I’m going to DIE.  Although, not as long as between Om Shanti Om and Rab Ne.  I actually got into a conversation with a stranger on the bus once about how frustrating that was.  Anyway, to try to alleviate the AGONY of waiting, I am also going through Shahrukh’s filmography looking at related roles.  Saturday, Billu.  Sunday, Asoka (although that was more about meeting the royals), and today, Om Shanti Om!
