Happy Fan Day (in India)!!! Reports from the front

Happy Fan Day!  The stupid distributors are being mean and stupid and not letting me go to a sneak preview tonight (like they did for Dilwale and Happy New Year, and even Prem Ratan Dhan Payo!  Come on, man!), so I have to wait until tonight to actually watch it.  But, in the meantime, I’ll be giving reports from the front as it comes in from the Indian websites.  Not reviews (who cares about those, right?), but box office sales.

(also, that header image is Shahrukh in London with his wax statue in Madame Tussaud’s which has been dressed up to look like Gaurav.  Creepy, right?)

Seiches and Fan’s Rapidly Approaching Release Date

I don’t have anything to watch this weekend!  Maybe I will actually be desperate enough to try out a Telugu release in theaters (Sardaar Gabbar Singh is supposed to be a sequel to a remake of Dabangg, and I feel like I have seen Dabangg enough that I could probably figure out what is happening).  But after weeks of having something new and exciting every Friday, the Hindi prospects this week are just dismal.

Global Box Office: As expected, Kapoor and Sons Does Well

Kapoor and Sons opened in Pakistan!  What the heck?  A movie with a gay main character is allowed to play, but Neerja isn’t?  I guess it really is about patriotism, not religion.  Or else Karan’s clever avoidance of actually using the word “gay” (or boyfriend or homosexual or anything else specific) paid off.

Jai Gangaajal Non-Review, No Spoilers Because I didn’t See It, but lots of Box Office Data!

Ending my several week streak of seeing the new movie every Friday, I DID NOT see Jai Gangaajal last night.  But it’s still worth talking about, because of the reasons I didn’t/was not able to see it.  And why maybe those reasons are affecting the box office in general.

Weekend Box Office Globally: Fitoor, Tere Bin Laden, Challenged by Tamil, Telugu, Punjabi, and Malayalam Releases

I already put up a detailed post about how Neerja in particular is doing (short answer: Spectacularly!  Long answer: Spectacularly considering the complete lack of faith in it shown by distributors), but what about the non-Neerja films?  How are they doing overseas?

Deadpool Going After Indian Market? Last Weekend’s Box Office for Fitoor, Deadpool, and Sanam Re

I still haven’t seen Deadpool, because I am swamped by Malayalam films.  I wasn’t sure if I ever would bother with it, at least before it hit DVD.  But then moviemavengal told me it uses an Indian song in the opening scene, and I was all in!

That also made me check out how it is doing in the Indian box office, just in case that Indian scored opening was part of a move on the Indian market.

Fitoor Box Office Collections: Start of a Trend for UTV?

Bollywoodhungama has some inside rumors about Fitoor to go along with their box office figures from the weekend (which are dismal).  But in a bigger sense, they bring up the question, what does this mean for UTV as a studio?  I am wondering, what does it mean for all the studios?  Is this a sign of a change of times?

What do Akshay Kumar and Jimmy Stewart have in Common? (warning! Boring accounting info below! Although there is a little Shahrukh right at the end)

Akshay Kumar and Jimmy Stewart actually have a lot in common!  Reliable hard-working long-term popular movie stars who managed to combine a variety of crowd-pleasing roles with some solid acting turns.  But what I am talking about today is just economics.

Airlift at the end of Week 2 Compared to Dilwale: Akshay is on track to beat SRK for the first time since 2006!

Airlift is rounding the corner of one more week of box office dominance.  It’s possible that Ghayal Once Again or Sanam Teri Kasam may come up to challenge it but I doubt it.  On the other hand, Fitoor is definitely going to knock it out of theaters next weekend.  So, really, we are in the homestretch and can start making final box office estimates.

Box Office Update: Airlift Continues to Soar, KKHH3 Finds Its Level

Bollywoodhungama comes through again!  For both Airlift and KKHH3, they have updated figures as of today.  And things look awesome for Airlift, but not so great for KKHH.

Of course, that’s just comparing them to each other, let’s see how they look when compared with more appropriate contemporaries.
