Dilwale is Now Available Streaming! Which means…..Fanvids!

I saw a thing about Dilwale being available so soon on streaming, because Shahrukh wanted to make it available for the international audience who didn’t get it in their countries ASAP, even faster than DVDs could get there.  And by what I can see on youtube, he definitely has an international audience, and they definitely started streaming the movie IMMEDIATELY.  And then illegally ripped the files and started making their own fanvids.

Dilwale DVD Release date Rumors

Dilwale came out almost 2 months ago, which means the DVD could be released any day now.  I’m a little spoiled, since I live ten minutes from the biggest Indian immigrant neighborhood in my region, I can just swing by the DVD store everyday on my way home from work and ask about availability.  But for you poor people who did not organize your entire lives around access to Indian DVDs, it might be a little trickier.

So, here are the rumors I have gathered so far from the internet.

IMPORTANT UPDATE:  Shantisal pointed out in the comments, it is currently available on Itunes!  For both rent and sale!  And also, apparently, Googleplay!  I still want the DVD, of course, because I Neeeeeeed the special features.  But this will make a nice stopgap!

EVEN MORE IMPORTANT UPDATE: njmtv.com has dvd pre-order available with a release date of Feb 28th! I love njmtv, partly because I used to rent from their storefront location when my sister lived in New Jersey.

What do Akshay Kumar and Jimmy Stewart have in Common? (warning! Boring accounting info below! Although there is a little Shahrukh right at the end)

Akshay Kumar and Jimmy Stewart actually have a lot in common!  Reliable hard-working long-term popular movie stars who managed to combine a variety of crowd-pleasing roles with some solid acting turns.  But what I am talking about today is just economics.

Airlift at the end of Week 2 Compared to Dilwale: Akshay is on track to beat SRK for the first time since 2006!

Airlift is rounding the corner of one more week of box office dominance.  It’s possible that Ghayal Once Again or Sanam Teri Kasam may come up to challenge it but I doubt it.  On the other hand, Fitoor is definitely going to knock it out of theaters next weekend.  So, really, we are in the homestretch and can start making final box office estimates.

Raees and Fan: New News and Wild Speculation! (Oh, and also, Shahrukh and Kajol Kissing)

After a news black out, suddenly stuff is happening with SRK’s next films!  Well, not suddenly, more like inevitably and part of a production plan.  He just started a new filming schedule for Raees, and Fan is coming out in a couple months, so it is time for the PR people to jump-start the rumor mills.

It’s all worth talking about, so I will, below.

Box Office Report: Dilwale is still knocking down Global records, Wazir is barely holding on, Airlift is coming to destroy them all

Thank you businessofcinema.com for providing so many numbers to me!  There are a few interesting things going on in the local and global box office, going into Airlift weekend.

Airlift, and Republic Day, will put an end to the traditional Christmas season releases, as the screens are given over to patriotic rather than family friendly films.  Meaning this is expected to be the last big week, and final box office projections are rolling out for Wazir, Dilwale, and Bajirao.

Read on to learn more.

Dilwale Breaks Worldwide Record, Bajirao Lags Behind

Newer Box Office Report Available HERE!!! Dilwale still leads!

Okay, the 4 week report is out, and despite losing screens worldwide, and its steep drop off in the major Indian territories, Dilwale is far outstripping Bajirao in the global box office.

In fact, it has already beat Salman’s Kick receipts, and is coming up on Shahrukh’s own records, for Happy New Year and My Name is Khan.

All of which I predicted!  (if you follow those links, you can see my previous posts).  But, why is this happening?  Why does the global picture look so different from the local?

Update: To see how I think the new Fan “Tu Nahin Samjhega” videos relate to this, check out posts here and here.

More Box Office Stuff! Shahrukh wins the outer regions, Bajirao hits off center, Salman is still our Bhai

Bollywoodhungama is just the best.  They just posted the best of the box office 2015 list, broken down by territories.  I already talked about how Bajirao stacked the deck by focusing on the Bombay audience, and how Dilwale suffered by losing market share to protests. And how Salman is consistently the all India winner.  But this makes it even more apparent.

Weekend Box Office Collections Analysis: Germany Loooooves SRK/Dilwale, and non-Indians looooooove Bajirao

So, Bollywoodhungama posted the weekend overseas box office figures, broken down by country, with screen counts included as well.  Some interesting things in there.

(also, admire my pun in the header image!  “Two days, two players, one game.”  How perfect is that for another Bajirao vs Dilwale weekend report!)

Dilwale vs Bajirao box office: Did Bajirao stack the deck?

So, this article points out that the gap between Dilwale and Bajirao is biggest in the Bombay box office, and that the Bombay market is usually the biggest profit within India.  They also point out, what should have been a “no duh!” sort of thing but which somehow had not occurred to me, that Bajirao is about a famous Maharashtrian, and therefore will do better in Maharashtra than anywhere else.

Dilwale finale! Full Ending! Complete Synopsis, finally! Obviously Spoilers: Part 7

Finally!  After working through 6 parts and almost two hours, we have reached the end of my extremely detailed and specific summary of Dilwale.  If you haven’t seen it yet, there are twists through out, so just skipping to the end bit will not make any difference if you want to know what happened.  You should probably go back and at least skim all the other parts.  Or better yet, see the movie!  It should be available in most places by now, and it really is fun to watch on the big screen! (part 1 here, part 2 here, part 3 here, part 4 here, part 5 here, and part 6 here)

Dilwale Full plot, spoilers all over the place, total summary: Part 6, second to last

(part 1 here, part 2 here, part 3 here, part 4 here, part 5 here, part 6 here, and part 7 here)

So, I have a strange ability to remember every detail of a movie after I have seen it once.  And I’ve seen Dilwale 4 times (so far).  So I am sharing my gift with the world, and going through the WHOLE THING in exhaustive detail for anyone who cannot see it in theaters for any reason.  But if you can see it in theaters, don’t read this!  Or at least, don’t read it until you’ve already seen it once!  Or, read it and then see it anyway!  It’s a good movie, and if you watch it in theaters with a full audience, it can become a great movie!

Dilwale continues to climb at the Overseas Box Office

And only like $200 of that is due to me!  According to bollywoodhungama, Dilwale is now at #7.  It is coming up fast on Chennai Express, at #6, and My Name is Khan at #5.  Remember also, Chennai Express ran for a full 6 weeks overseas, and Dilwale hasn’t even crossed the 2 week mark yet.

Dilwale Full Summary, All Spoilers! Part 5

The slog continues!  I hope to get past the Interval by the end of this post, with any luck I can finish the whole thing by the New Year.  Or at least, by not too far into the New Year. (part 1 here, part 2 here, part 3 here, part 4 here, part 5 here, part 6 here, and part 7 here)

Dilwale: Full plot synopsis! Part 4

In case you are wondering, no, I don’t have a bootleg copy or anything.  This is all based on memory from the 3 times I have seen it in theaters (so far).  I have jettisoned vast amounts of mental materials (for instance, the names of everybody I knew in elementary school including my teachers) in order to make brain space for every second of every movie I have ever watched in my entire life.  Very useful in grad school for cinema studies; not that useful in real life. (part 1 here, part 2 here, part 3 here, part 4 here, part 5 here, part 6 here, and part 7 here)

Dilwale Box Office: Was this all part of a master plan?

So, Bollywoodhungama.com just posted an analysis of the second weekend Dilwale numbers.  They see the limp box office for Dilwale and good word of mouth for Bajirao as a sign that Shahrukh should take a moment and think about doing something a little different, instead of just relying on his star quality to carry the picture, because the audience is obviously tired of the same old thing.  I agree with their analysis of the box office numbers and all, but I think they are missing the bigger picture.  Maybe Dilwale released when it did BECAUSE he wants to different films, and needed to rush a traditional one out the door first.

Dilwale: Full plot synopsis! Part 3

I’ve already covered the first 2o minutes here, and the next bit after that (including the first fight scene!) here.  So, where did I leave off?  Right, Shahrukh is striding towards the camera with Anwar and Shakti falling in behind him and the music pounding out a war beat as the crowd cheers and whistles, marking the true introduction of Shahrukh and the birth of a new Shahrukh Khan character.  Woo! (part 1 here, part 2 here, part 3 here, part 4 here, part 5 here, part 6 here, and part 7 here)

Dilwale: Full plot synopsis! Part 2

So, I left off at the song, right?  So, song ends, and Varun gets a bucket of water in his face.  Because he was sleeping leaning against the car in the garage instead of working or even being awake to prevent the theft of a car radio!  Shahrukh chides him gently, Varun is very apologetic, but again, not that scared. (part 1 here, part 2 here, part 3 here, part 4 here, part 5 here, part 6 here, and part 7 here)

And then cut to the first comedy sequence!  Oh boy!  In one of my earlier reviews I mentioned how these feel like a whole different movie that had been forced on to the original, better, film.  And I am standing by that!

Anyway, here we are in another garage with even more eccentric decorating (a bedazzled skull phone, for instance).  And here is Sanjay Mishra, with unusual hair and an American pop culture t-shirt (I don’t remember what it is in this scene, but I know later it is a very accurate picture of Heath Ledger’s version of the joker.  That kind of thing).  And here is Sidhu!  Varun’s best friend/honorary brother!  He is also the thief that is tormenting their garage!

(this phone)

He and Sanjay Mishra (character name, Oscar Bhai.  Ooo, Christian!  We really are in Goa!) have a conversation about how much money he will pay for the car radio.  I am briefly interested in his comic dialogue stylings.  He uses the sort of rhyming, alliterative style of talk that is part of classical Indian poetry.  Think Jackie Shroff in SLB’s Devdas.  And the last two words of every line are a matching pair of brand names, like “nokia-blackberry.”  So it is kind of a cool combination of classical Indian literature rules, and modern India’s brand obsession.  But after about 2 minutes, the novelty wears off and I am done with this character.
