This is such a good movie! In a very dark way, it puts our heroine through the wringer because that’s what can happen in India, all sorts of things happen to a woman without her doing anything to cause them.

Silly Sunday/Shahrukh Summer: Shahrukh as The Count of Monte Christo!
Do you start craving sandwiches when you read that title? Or is it just me? Anyway, this is a suggestion from sartrekid and I think it is a great idea! (part 2 here)
Continue readingFemale Films Week: Mardaani, Spoiled Little Boy Versus Angry Mother
Finally watched it! Just in time for the sequel. And it was way more fun than I expected, some grittiness but also a lot of satisfying heroism.
Continue readingShahrukh Summer: Old Versus Young, Songs Edition!
Reflects on Life pointed out on yesterday’s post that it really wasn’t fair because still photos don’t completely convey everything. So, songs! Do you prefer young and hyperactive SRK, or old and slow moving?
Continue readingSaturday Small Talk: Chat Away While I Do Laundry
Happy Saturday! I’m at my parents with the dog and my laundry. I still love doing laundry at there place, such a thrill.
Continue readingFemale Films: Pakeezah, the Forgiven Tawaif
Oh boy, the second classic Tawaif film in two days! I say “second”, but really it is all of them. Pakeezah and Umrao Jaan cannot be compared to other Tawaif films, they are on their own level.
Continue readingHindi Film 101: The Tawaif, Who Was She in Life and on Film?
I finally watched Umrao Jaan, and now I am all interested in Tawaif’s. Hopefully you are too!
Continue readingTGIF/Shahrukh Summer: 2000s or Today, Which Do You Prefer?
Silly post, unrelated to the Female Film theme, but I feel like we need silliness in our lives. Let’s compare old-young SRK photos and pick which is best!
Continue readingFemale Films Week: Akira, My Favorite Action Movie
This movie was so interesting! It really is just a southern action movie with the hero turned into a heroine. But at the same time, there were all of these things that are so specific to the female experience, and I just have to wonder, did the director look at them and think “Hey! I should remake this with a female star!” Or, were they added in when the hero became a woman?
Continue readingFemale Films Week: Kahaani, the Power of an Average Woman
Why oh why did I commit to two new reviews in one day? This was a terrible plan! And I am worried that both reviews will end up being shortchanged.
Continue readingFemale Films Week: Umrao Jaan, the Homelessness of the Courtesan
I finally watched it! And it was sad, as expected, but also mesmerizing in a way I didn’t anticipate. Such a careful world that is created.
Continue readingShahrukh Summer: In Honor of Khayyam and Poetry Day Yesterday, His Most Poetic Songs
Sorry, I know about half of my readers are not fluent Hindi speakers. I’m certainly not one either. But I am going to scramble in the dark and pick out the songs that, even with my small amount of Hindi knowledge, I can still enjoy as poetry. And as a special treat, I am posting translations for them all! Isn’t that fun?
Continue readingLaaga Chunari Main Daag Review: A Happy Movie About a Sad Topic
Pretty sure the title isn’t a spoiler, the trailer and poster alone, not to mention the title, made it pretty clear what the film is about.
Continue readingHindi Film 101/Female Films Week: Why India > Hollywood for Female Lead Characters
Ready for a thought post? Of course you are! Thought posts are the best! Or at least, I like them.
Continue readingFemale Films Week: Anand! The Telugu Film That isn’t Like The Stereotype of Telugu Films
This is such a good movie! Such an odd sweet pleasant happy movie, with a female character at the center of it who is an odd sweet pleasant happy woman. Really, watch it! It’s on Hotstar, you have no excuse.
Continue readingWednesday Watching Post: What Are You Reading and Watching and Thinking and Listening to During Female Films Week?
Happy Wednesday! Halfway through the work week and it is really dragging me down this week. Sooooooooo many conference calls.
Continue readingBandini: A Story About a Woman, for Men
This is a classic, if you are talking women lead pictures in India you have to discuss it. But I don’t like it. So this will be an odd review.
Continue readingShahrukh Summer: Shahrukh Rain Songs! Which is the Best One?
It’s rainy and tired and bleh here today, so I am going to use my energies wisely and create a post of every single rain song in Shahrukh’s entire career. For The Good of Humanity.
Continue readingKhayyam, the Music for the Poetry
What an interesting death to wake up to. Someone who was very very old and revered but also a little bit forgotten. And now I, and everyone else, am inspired to learn about and write about him.
Continue readingFemale Lead Films Week! I’m Finally Going to Review Bandini!
Okay, I came up with another theme! Not a great one, but one that should give us a decent mix of movies over the next 10 days, straight through to Saaho. And force me to finally review/watch a few classics.
Continue readingRewrite/Discussion Post: Big Little Lies, Good Omens, The Act, Dead To Me, Stranger Things, GLOW
This is me being lazy and sleepy again. I’ve been on a binge of limited streaming serieses over the past three weekends (yes, I could have spent that time watching movies, but then I would have had to pay attention instead of blogging while I watched). And they all are more or less acceptable for Indian remakes, and also more or less popular among the readers here (based on how many times they’ve come up in comments so far). So, this is a place to talk about them! Indian recasting, why they could/could not be remade in India, general thoughts, all fair game!
Continue readingShahrukh Summer Discussion Post: Which Movie Roles From Other Actors Would We Like to See Him Play?
I had a 7am phone call at work this morning, meaning I left home at 6:30am, meaning I am not thinking super straight right now and deep thinking is not going to be happening today. So I’m gonna start off a Shahrukh discussion post and hope you all can think for me.
Continue readingMonday Morning Questions: What Do You Want to Ask Me the Week After Blinded by the Light Came Out?
Happy Monday! I had to come in to work 2 hours early today, and I was up way too late last night writing the Blinded by the Light reviews, so I an wiped. Do not expect coherent answers necessarily, but I will try my best.
Continue readingBlinded By the Light Review (SPOILERS): That Moment When Your Whole Life Opens Up
What an interesting movie! The plot isn’t really a “plot” as such, it is just a series of things that happen to our hero after he starts his journey to finding his own identity. I recommend reading my No Spoilers review if you want to avoid spoilers, but honestly, reading this review first won’t “ruin” the movie for you, because it is about so much more than plot.
Continue readingBlinded By the Light Review (No Spoilers): Art That Unlocks the Door to a Shared Humanity
I watched it! And boy, it is way easier to watch a British movie than an Indian movie, it was playing at like 5 theaters within 15 minutes of my house, instead of the 3 theaters within an hour and a half that I am used to. The same is probably true around you, so you have no excuse not to go see it.
