What a great concept for a short film collection! Take a story we think we know, and then turn it into something totally different just when we think we know what is happening.

Ajeeb Daastaans Review (No Spoilers): Do Not Think You Know Where These Movies Are Going
Well, this was a FASCINATING collection of short films! I highly highly recommend it. Except for the 2nd film which might have been the most interesting, but also has something happen in it that is so bad I suspect it will be triggering for some of you. I’ll SPOIL it at the end of this review so you can decide for yourself and be warned. Even if you can’t watch that movie, you can still watch the other 3!!!!
Continue readingDolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare Review (SPOILERS): Are Male-Female Relationships Inevitably Toxic? This Film Says YES!
Well, this was kind of a downer of a movie! Happy, in that I am glad these stories are being told. Sad, in that BLECH! These stories have so little hope! Anyway, if you don’t feel like being depressed, you can just read my summary and discuss below instead of watching it for yourself.
Continue readingDolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare Review (No Spoilers): An Indian Woman’s Life is Constant Misery and Pain and Compromise
Well, this is a total downer of a movie! The posters and even the title sell it as more fun happy women together sort of thing, it’s more of a “life sucks and then you die, having scratched out one small piece of happiness for yourself” kind of thing. Watch if you want a very well made and well performed version of a woman’s life in modern urban India, don’t watch if you want escapism.
Continue readingHappy Sonakshi Sinha Day! Akira, Her Most Special Movie
This movie is so good! And interesting! And unique! And Sonakshi is amazing in it. Seriously, you should all watch it. And maybe not read this review, because it is crazy long.
Continue readingHappy Birthday Jimmy Shergill and Konkona Sen Sharma!
Interesting combo today! 2 people that I am fonder of than I should logically be, and I am guessing I am not alone?
Continue reading2009 Week: Wake Up Sid! Would Be the Best Film of the Year, But then There’s Dev.D and Kaminey and Luck By Chance
Happy Friday! I am slogging through What’s Your Raashee?, but in the meantime I will throw up this quick post.
Continue readingFemale Films Week: Akira, My Favorite Action Movie
This movie was so interesting! It really is just a southern action movie with the hero turned into a heroine. But at the same time, there were all of these things that are so specific to the female experience, and I just have to wonder, did the director look at them and think “Hey! I should remake this with a female star!” Or, were they added in when the hero became a woman?
Continue readingLaaga Chunari Main Daag Review: A Happy Movie About a Sad Topic
Pretty sure the title isn’t a spoiler, the trailer and poster alone, not to mention the title, made it pretty clear what the film is about.
Continue readingFriday Classics: A Death in the Gunj, The Death of a Whole Way of Life
Well, this was a hard watch! That kind of thoughtless unmeaning hurt that happens all the time every day and there is no way around it. I am so glad I watched this first thing in the morning so I didn’t have to try to sleep with all that unpleasantness in my head! Oh, and it was also a very well-made and acted and filmed and written movie.
Continue readingShahrukh Birthday RePost: Shahrukh and Irrfan in a Passionate Late in Life Relationship
Well, MKY pointed out at in the comments on my Friday post that Shahrukh would never play a same-sex romance, or the father of a marriage age daughter, or a polyamorous man in 3 relationships. To which I said “well, that’s what fanfic is for!” So if Shahrukh isn’t going to give us these films in real life, I feel I have an obligation to give them to us in fanfic form.
Silly Sunday: Shahrukh and Irrfan in a Passionate Late in Life Relationship
Well, MKY pointed out at in the comments on my Friday post that Shahrukh would never play a same-sex romance, or the father of a marriage age daughter, or a polyamorous man in 3 relationships. To which I said “well, that’s what fanfic is for!” So if Shahrukh isn’t going to give us these films in real life, I feel I have an obligation to give them to us in fanfic form.
Friday Classics: Wake Up Sid, Ranbir’s Best Performance Before Sanju
Happy Friday! I just rapid re-released all my Sanjay posts, I’m driving to work so I can zip home, walk Dog Hazel and then zip out again to catch the Sanju release at the earliest possible show. Busy times! But first I want to take a moment to remember a completely different kind of film that I still think is Ranbir’s best performance.
Friday Classic: Talvar, The Middle-Class Pinched From Both Sides
What a fascinating frustrating movie! Based on a fascinating frustrating real life case. Which, I am sure, many people in the comments already know much more about than I do.
Luck By Chance Annotated Edition Part 8: The Ending! Friendly Appearance from Shahrukh
And now we are at an end! In a very long complicated section, complete with special guest star (I won’t make you wait, it’s Shahrukh). (full index of Luck By Chance coverage here)
Luck By Chance Annotated Edition Part 3: From Circus to Fridge
Part 3! Gonna see if I can manage to get through more than one page of notes in one post. At least a page and a half. I don’t want to get too ambitious. (full listing of Luck By Chance posts here)
Luck by Chance (The Annotated Edition) Part 1: Excel Logo to Mac Mohan Cameo
Like I said in my first review, I got about 5 minutes into this movie and paused to get a pencil and paper. Because there is SO MUCH. Not like so much depth and soul (although there is that too, that’s what my other two reviews covered), but so much data. I know I probably missed at least half of it, but here is what I got from my 5 pages of notes. (Full Luck By Chance Index here)
Luck By Chance Review (SPOILERS): First, Do No Harm
If you haven’t seen this movie, or want to think about performances and songs and mise-en-scene, go back to my last review. This is for talking about what actually happens and what we think of the characters and what the point of it all might have been.
Luck By Chance First Review (No Spoilers): A Cynical Melodrama With a Soul
Well, I finally watched it! Took me 6 hours because I had to keep pausing to take notes. So, there will be a much bigger review(s) coming over the next few days. But I want to start with just a simple review of it as a film, not as a sociological study.
Akira Review (SPOILERS!): Not Your Usual Heroine Film
I already put up my spoiler-free review, right when I got home late last night, but now that I’ve slept on it, I’m ready for my spoiler review! And I am very excited because there are all these plot details that I am DYING to talk about!
Omkara: Man! That Was Depressing!
I knew it would be! I remember getting all depressed when I read the play back in college, and it was even worse watching it being acted out by a bunch of actors I really liked. No wonder it has taken me years and years and years to get around to finally watching it. But then moviemavengal posted on it and pointed out that Ajay is SMOKING HOT, and that was enough to finally get me to check it out!
