I finished it! Thanks to my disastrous start to the new year (landlord says maybe I can move back in on Tuesday), I spent the weekend huddled in my parents’ guest room, with nothing to do but watch Pakistani soap opera’s on Netflix (yes, I did start Zindagi Gulzar Hai also). And so I finished 23 episodes on 24 hours. Which doesn’t sound that impressive until you remember to subtract sleep time. Well, not that much sleep time. Like 5 hours.

Things Are Still Not Hunky-Dory: Humsafar Review/Summary Episodes 8-14
In preparation for Raees, I am zipping through Humsafar, the show that made Mahira Khan famous. It was a bit of a slog at first, but now I am addicted and am rapidly making my way to the end. Along the way, I wanted to pause and give some summary and discussion of the episodes. I already did 1-8 here, now it’s time to move on to 8-14.
Things Are Not Hunky-Dory: Humsafar Review/Summary Part 1, Episodes 1-8
As I am sure many of you know, the two big hit Pakistani soap operas, Humsafar and Zindagi Gulzar Hai, were just added to Netflix. They’ve been available through other less-good sources (ErosNow, youtube) for a while, plus of course their original broadcast, so there is a good chance some of you are ahead of me in watching them. Anyway, since enough people are seeing them now, and especially because Mahira Khan starred in Humsafar and is about to star in Raees, I am putting out a review/summary of the episodes in 3 parts, starting with the first 8. There will be a little bit of non-spoiler to start if you want to decide if the show is for you before reading on.
Dangal Review (SPOILERS): Every Gender Normativity Pothole Avoided!
I put up my NO SPOILERS review last night after I got home, and then I slept for 5 hours, and now I am at work and all ready to write my SPOILERS review. And then right after work is family dinner tonight, and then I come home and do laundry and wrap 37 presents and empty my sink of dirty dishes and maybe think about finishing decorating my trees. Christmas week releases are not the easiest. So forgive me if this review sounds a little punchy.
Dear Zindagi Full Summary Part 3 (SPOILERS): First Song!
The last section got a little extreme with the general thematic analysis. But this time, I am going to stay strictly focused on what happens in this actual section. Or at least, that’s the goal.
Dear Zindagi Full Summary Part 2 (SPOILERS): Let’s Talk Color Tones!
I have now seen this movie 4 times, which means in theory I should be able to remember in in exact detail and give a perfect summary. But in reality means I am going to mix up the order of a couple of scenes and forget an important line and stuff. Oh well, someday my brain-recorder technology will be perfected and I won’t have to worry about this any more. (SPOILER review here, non-spoiler here, and part 1 of the summary here)
Dear Zindagi Full Summary (SPOILERS, of course) Part 1: Right From the Start, We Learn This is a Woman’s Story
I mentioned in my SPOILER review, how this is a very very female story, both in content and style. Sure, the narrative is all about one woman’s journey, based on emotions and relationships and all that “girly” stuff. But it is also told in a very female way, more about what is unsaid than what is said, through body language and intuition and so on. Which starts in the very first series of shots.
Ae Dil Hai Mushkil Full Summary Part 7: The Part With the Friendly Appearance
Okay, I need to hurry through this to be finished by Shahrukh Week, starting on Wednesday (this time-posts on Shahrukh movies in which he mentors young women!). I am all the way past the Interval of ADHM, and my posts are slowly increasing in length, so I think I should be able to finish this thing off soon.
Ae Dil Hai Mushkil Full Summary, Part 5 of ??: Chandni! O Mere Chandni! And a Statement on the Position of the Heroine
Okay, back to work! Ish. I’ll still be taking things slow, but I need to do something, and I also need to finish all my thoughts on ADHM before I get too far from the last time I saw it.
Ae Dil Hai Mushkil Full Summary Part 4: Including the Missing Song!!!
Part 4! I am just zipping along! Sort of! Not really! But to be fair, I am also doing really short posts. I could probably have knocked this whole thing out in 4, if I did longer lengths. But then I would get all tired and resentful and wouldn’t have the energy to post about anything else. So, part 4, still not up to Interval! (part 1 here, part 2 here, part 3 here)
Ae Dil Hai Mushkil full Summary Part 3 of ??: First Song!
Shivaay Summary! The Whole Stupid Thing!!! Mostly Action Scenes
Third and final Shivaay post! I already put up a No Spoilers review, and a Spoilers review. Now it’s time for the more specific detailed summary of the whooooooooole movie.
Ae Dil Hai Mushkil Full Summary!!! Part 1 of ?
I’m just assuming this is going to turn into multiple parts. Shivaay I’m going to knock out in one looooooooooong post, but this movie is a lot more interesting than that one. If you aren’t down for a detailed shot by shot moment by moment discussion, you can check out my quick spoiler review and No Spoilers review I already wrote for ADHM.
Ae Dil Hai Mushkil SPOILER Review: Seriously, Don’t Read if You Haven’t Seen, the Ending Should Surprise You
Normally I’m not that careful about spoilers on this blog. I flag them when I put them into a post, I put up spoiler and non-spoiler reviews, but I don’t care if you read the spoiler review before you see the movie, or if you put a spoil in a comment, or whatever. However, in this case, I’d like to try to keep the experience that Karan carefully crafted for the audience. So I’m putting up this review early, so everyone who has seen it has a place to think about and talk about the film as a whole. And then the other review will be for people who haven’t seen the movie yet, but are planning to.
OK Kanmani: Seriously, How Will this Work in a Different Language?
I watched this movie months and months ago when it first arrived on American Netflix, but that was before I was blogging seriously so I didn’t pay very close attention. I wanted to watch it again, now that the remake will be releasing soon (January 13th), and think about how this film could possibly be remade.
MS Dhoni: The Untold Story (SPOILERS!!!): The Ending Felt More Crowd Service Than Triumphal
Okay, the first half felt like it had a very clear and defined message about working hard and pursuing excellence for its own sake, with no hope of reward. And then the second half just felt all meh and mushy. And it’s when the romance was suddenly shoved in with seemingly little connection to the rest of the film. (first half summary here)
MS Dhoni: The Untold Story (SPOILERS!!!): Review with plot details, Somehow the 1st Half Where “Nothing” Happened Was The Most Interesting Part
I put up my non-spoiler review up right after I watched it, but I wanted to kind of let the film percolate before I attempted my detailed summary/spoiler review. Which might mean that a miss a scene here or there, but I should have a better idea of the overall message of the film. Oh, and I let it percolate too long (or not long enough?) so this is going to be too long and end up split in two parts.
Baar Baar Dekho Spoiler Review! Part 2! Did It Earn The Ending?
I already put up a non-spoiler review, and a spoiler-y review that goes into detail all the way through the first half. And now I am refreshed, post-nap, and ready to move on and finish off the rest of the film!
Baar Baar Dekho Full Summary/Review!!! SPOILERS! Was That Too Much Plot or Too Little?
I already posted my non-spoilers review, now it’s time for the Spoilers one! I’m going to also try to go through the whole film real quick point by point, so you can follow my reasoning even if you haven’t had a chance to see it yet. Or if you don’t want to see it, but you want to know what happened. (second half through to the ending available here)
A Flying Jatt SPOILERS Review: Whole thing described! It’s got a really nice message
I put up my non-spoilers review already, now it’s time for the one where I zoom through the whole film for those who missed it in theaters and want to know what happened, and for those who saw it in theaters and want a detailed discussion of every part.
Mohenjo Daro Spoiler Review: I Really Wish It Had Just Been a Romance
In my earlier non-Spoiler review, I mentioned that Mohenjo felt like 3 good movies smashed together into one, a romance, a political drama, and a big action movie. Now, after I’ve had time to let the movie percolate in the back of my mind, I think the romance is the best of the 3. Not by much, they are all strong, but the romance was just the slightest bit better filled in and more emotionally resonant.
Rustom Review/Summary: Whole Thing! With Spoilers! It’s Almost all Exposition
I was thinking I would do a full summary for this film, like I usually do for a major release. But then I started thinking about it, and the whole movie is basically exposition. There isn’t nearly as much to talk about as usual in terms of visuals or dialogue or character moments. So I’m going to skip through it pretty quick and just lay out what happened. If you don’t want to bother seeing the movie, but are curious about how the plot plays out, you are in the right place! (if you just want a regular review, look at my first Rustom post)
Dishoom: Whole Thing! SPOILER Review Mixed With Summary
Sultan Part 6: Getting Close to the End! Lots of Fight Scenes!
Sultan Part 2 of ?: Yay, Anushka’s here!
I’ve seen Sultan twice now, and looking at a possible 3rd time sometime this week, but for those of you who can’t see it, or can only see it once, or saw it and are trying to remember everything that happened, I am going to try my best to remember everything I saw and write it all down for you.
(part 1 here, part 2 here, part 3 here, part 4 here, part 5 here, part 6 here, part 7 here)
