I’ve been informed that this movie is getting crazy buzz, like “best film of the decade” buzz. Huh. I just don’t see it. It’s good, but it also has major flaws. If you saw it and want some help following the plots, or if you aren’t able to see it but want to know what happens, you can read this review. If you want to go in without knowing what will happen, you can read my other review. Or I guess if you didn’t like this movie, you should also read this review and see if I can articulate what bothered you, if perhaps it is the same thing that bothered me.

Super Deluxe Review (No Spoilers): Everything is Connected and Everything is Broken
Out of all the movies in the world, I picked this one. Because it started at 7pm, unlike all the other movies I wanted to watch which started at 10pm. It was fate!
Continue readingWednesday Tamil: Sarvam Thaala Mayam, a Movie About Music
I am so excited that this movie is on Netflix! I was all set for it to be streaming on some obscure platform and I’d have to encourage you all to try to track it down. And instead, it’s right there! On Netflix!
Continue readingValentine’s Week Romance Review for Thursday Tamil! OK Kanmani!
Another Tamil film! One I completely liked, unlike 96 which has me a little more back and forth.
Continue readingValentine’s Thursday Tamil: 96! A Romance in Two Eras
This is a very well-made movie. And confirms my feeling that Trisha is secretly a brilliant actress, as good as Parvathy, but less likely to be given really good roles (partly because the Tamil industry just isn’t as good for female characters as the Malayalam). And also confirms my feeling that Vijay Sethupathi was put on this earth for women who like big natural bodies and sensitive souls. Oh, and this is a very VERY long review, once I get into the SPOILERS section. Watch out!
Continue readingSarvam Thaala Mayam Review (SPOILERS): Music Which Destroys Boundaries
I put off writing this review, because I wanted to make sure I had enough time really say good things. Because this is a very good movie and it deserves a good smart review.
Continue reading2.0 Review (SPOILERS): Rajinikanth as 3 Separate Characters, and Akshay as 1 Indelible One
As I already said in my No Spoilers review, this move is surprisingly good! Well, “surprising” to me, because I usually don’t like Shankar, and the trailer made it seem like just shallow action. So, I recommend watching it if possible without having read spoilers. But if you don’t believe it can really be that good, read the spoilers and then go see it anyway. Oh, and I should say it isn’t a total “anyone will love it” movie, so if you don’t like action science superhero films, you probably won’t like this.
2.0 Review (No Spoilers): Surprise! It’s Actually a Really Good Movie!
This is my favorite way to be wrong. A movie I wrote off as terrible based on the ad campaign and so on turns out to be great! Boo for my predictive abilities but YAAAY for the WORLD!!!!
Hindi/Tamil/Telugu/Malayalam/Kannada 101 RePost: Rajinikanth Part 2, Homeless to Millionaire (in honor of the release of 2.0)
I already put up my part 1, which I am sure was not fully accurate and certainly not complete. But it is my stab at somehow pulling together what little I know into a cohesive whole, in the hopes that it starts a conversation and I can learn more from you all.
Hindi/Tamil/Kannada/Malayalam/Telugu Film 101 RePost: Rajinikanth’s Life, Part 1 Bus Conductor to Movie Star (in Honor of 2.0 Releasing)
Well, I did it! I finally finished my Rajinikanth biography! Now I just have the Savitri, Hema Malini, and Shashi Kapoor biography on my to do pile. Plus various other film books that aren’t star memoirs. Anyway, now I am ready to very tentatively try to put together some kind of narrative of Rajinikanth’s life, based on the movies I have watched (far more than I realized!), and this book, and information I gathered elsewhere
Tamil RePost: Robot/Enthiran! Read My Review of the First One Before the Second Releases; I did NOT Like It
I finally saw Robot! I think it might be one of those movies that you miss out too much if you don’t watch it at the exact right moment. Watching it now, just a few years later, the special effects seem dated, the song sequences not so great, and even Rajni Sir’s performance is not as good as it could be. Remember, I am coming off of seeing him in Kabali, where he not only played his age, he played a layered real complicated version of himself. I mean, this performance is great, the best part of the movie for sure, but I kept thinking “why are you doing this when I know you could do so much better?”
Tuesday Tamil: Sarkar Review (SPOILERS), Let Us All Bow Down and Worship the Rich
I already put up the no spoilers review, in case you want to watch the film fresh. This is your SPOILER option, in case you don’t care about going in fresh and want the spoilers. Oh, and this is also one of those reviews where I get really angry and mean. If you enjoy it when I do that.
Tuesday Tamil: Sarkar Review (No Spoilers), Tamil Nadu Has an Embarrassing Crush on Corporate Raiders
I did it! A two movie week! So I was able to see both the northern and southern big Diwali release. And although I really didn’t like the Hindi film, I didn’t like the Tamil film EVEN MORE.
Tuesday Tamil ReRun Announcement: Next Week, 10/2, Kandukondain Kandukondain!
I am sure my regular Tamil readers are rolling their eyes a bit at this. But this is such a wonderful movie, and a great introduction for those of you who have been all-Hindi up until now. AR Rahman soundtrack, mixture of stars (Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam), and a great script based on Jane Austen. What’s not to love? (by the way, no Tamil on Tuesday this week because I am hoping to see Chekka Chivantha Vaanam in theaters and I will review it whenever I can see it even if the day doesn’t start with a “T”)
Global Box Office: Hindi Film Loses Its Plurality
Interesting week! Nothing is happening as expected, the world is crazy and upside down, numbers are fun! (as always, numbers from bollywoodhungama)

Thursday Tamil: Theri, Amy Jackson Has Terrible Hair
Happy Thursday! I wanted to watch a deep good classic interesting Tamil film, but none of those are streaming (Gautham Menon, what is up with your films? Why are they all in some kind of strange streaming rights limbo?). So instead I watched Theri. Which is……not deep. But oh so very very fun!!!!
Tuesday Tamil: Ayan, Suriya Goes International
I considered titling this “Suriya and his pecs”. Really, is there something I am missing here? He unbuttons his shirt so much! And it’s not to show off the six pack, it’s to show off his blossoming pectoral muscles.
Thursday Tamil: I, Shankar Makes Either a Very Deep or a Very Shallow Statement on Image, and I’m Honestly Not Sure Which
Well, here’s another Shankar movie that I am all torn about. Shankar is just not my director.
Netflix List For June! Almost Nothing Added Besides Lust
Time for a Netflix update! Which I only do once a month or so, so it’s not up to the minute accurate. But hopefully I make up for that with the descriptions I give them. (Accessbollywood.net does the real work of keeping this list updated, you should definitely absolutely subscribe to them for your day to day updates.)
Tuesday Tamil: Vishwaroopam 1, Before 2 Comes Out
I have been avoiding this movie because I have a complicated relationship with Kamal (like him as an actor, don’t like him as a writer), and I was afraid I would hate it and then you would all be mad at me. But turns out, I liked it!
Thursday Tamil: Kaala Review (No Spoilers), People Are Not Unhygenic
I made a big fuss (okay, a modest fuss) about how Carol should see the Tamil version not the dubbed, and then I ended up at the dubbed. Oh well, it was either that or wait until Saturday. So instead I did a dubbed version at a midweek show which means I will be yawning and fussing through work tomorrow.
Netflix List for May! My Favorite Rom-Com of 2017 Arrives!!!!! And My Favorite Song Sequence
Time for a Netflix update! Which I only do once a month or so, so it’s not up to the minute accurate. But hopefully I make up for that with the descriptions I give them. Thursday Tamil: Maari, a Very Irreverent Film
What a fun movie! So glad it is on Netflix so I can watch it easily and recommend it to you all. Maybe not a brilliant Balachander level film like the last few Tamil ones I watched, but very very fun.
