SRKajol rewatch reaches DDLJ FINALLY!!! (Spoilers, of course, but if you haven’t already seen this movie multiple times in the past 20 years, you have been wasting your life)

DDLJ!  Woo!  I can go off DVD with full confidence in my abilities!  Woop woop!  Although I may still re-watch it at some point just for joy and happiness.

Also, if you really want to learn about DDLJ, I cannot recommend this book highly enough.  I will be referring back to it constantly, and even when I don’t refer back specifically, just assume that Chopra’s theories are the underlying force behind everything I say.

(also, oh my god I love the header image I found!  Adi was such a dork.  Also, I am pretty sure that is actually from the sets of K2H2 based on the suit, but I don’t care, I’m still using it.  I may reuse it if I ever get to K2H2)

5 Friendly Appearances: No, I’m not going to talk about Om Shanti Om

Back in the 90s, when the world was young, people used to be much more relaxed about just stumbling over to the neighboring set and doing a quick funny cameo.  Sometimes a quick, funny, fourth wall breaking cameo (those are the best!).  Not like a big appearance for a song, like Shahrukh in Kaal or Aishwarya in “Ishq Kameena”.  Or a carefully planned mini-appearance, like everybody in Om Shanti Om.  Or one of those medium things, like Aish in Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam or Shahrukh and Tabu in Saathiya.  No, just a sort of “Hey, I was over here having lunch with you anyway, how about I be in your film?” kind of appearance.  Here are 5 of the best ones that I remember!

Baazigar Part 8: The End! And It’s GOOOOOOOD! Oh, and SPOILERS, whatever

Finally done with the boring pre-awesome movies!  I mean, Karan-Arjun and Baazigar are good all around movies, and they are also SRKajol movies in that Shahrukh and Kajol co-star.  But they aren’t SRKajol movies in the truest sense, that is, films which only exist because of their chemistry, which are crafted purely to highlight their connection, which go to a whole other realm of filmmaking because of that.  And also, they aren’t SRKajol movies in the sense that I don’t have them all perfectly memorized because I have watched them So. Many. Times.  So, next time!  DDLJ!  Very excited!

But for now, the best part of Baazigar!  Which isn’t even the final SRKajol scene (see what I mean about it not being a movie built around SRKajol?) but is actually the final fight scene!  Which is just ridiculous and also ridiculously entertaining.

Baazigar Part 6: Even More Baazigar-y!

Poor Baazigar!  I started this over a week ago, but I keep getting distracted by Sunny Deol (Ghayal Once Again opening soon!  Which means I need to track down a copy of Ghayal the first one before that somehow!), and by new movies (check out the review and synopsis of Airlift), so Baazigar keeps getting short shrift.  Plus, it is so haaaaaard to write!  Compared to the next 3 SRKajol films, which I know so well I can basically write them in my sleep.

So I am going to do my darndest to actually run this thing out to the end so I can coast through the DDLJKKHHK3G goodness, followed by the massive depression and sobbing of MNIK.  And maybe throw in some bonus friendly appearances along the way (Did you know they have a scene together in Duplicate?  Has anyone but me actually seen Duplicate?).

SRKajol rewatch, Baazigar part 5, Here Be Spoilers: I might make it past intermission!

I am moving so slowly through this thing!  And I don’t know why.  Well, I kind of know why.  It’s because the plot is soooooooooooooo complicated that I feel like I can only go through about two twists before I have to pause for everyone to go “wait, what happened?”  Kind of like Dickens writing for newspaper serials instead of novel readers.

We ended the last section on a HUGE twist, so lets move forward and see what slightly smaller ones await us here.  Oh, also, I am once again writing DVD-less at work, so forgive any slight mistakes!

Shahrukh Versus Aamir: Aamir says he is just like you; Shahrukh says you are just like him

I already posted the awesome awesome videos that Shahrukh and YRF released today highlighting the SRK fan community.  Reverse fanvids, if you will.  But I have so many more thoughts on what they mean than I was able to put in that post!

For instance, doesn’t this remind you of Aamir Khan promoting 3 Idiots?

Shahrukh just did something awesome!

Well, really Shahrukh and YRF.  They just posted (like, a few hours ago, just in time for my morning twitter check!) 5 amazing videos that were, I guess, reverse fanvids?  Videos that Shahrukh and YRF made about fans, instead of the videos I highlighted yesterday, that were made by fans for Shahrukh and YRF.  I have many many thoughts!  But first, I want to get a post up just so you can all see the videos.

Fan Vid Time! Adele, Elvis, Britney, and Shahrukh!

So, I was in the mood for some good new SRK fanvids last night.  Who knows why!  Maybe it was something I ate, maybe it was that I just re-watched Asoka, maybe it was because I was spending too long staring at the incredibly sexy Dabboo Ratnani photos…. (It’s the photos).

Anyway, here are some of the best ones I found!

Baazigar! I am “juggling” (see what I did there?) multiple parts of this SRKajol rewatch: Part 3

So, part 1 here, part 2 here, and now…..Part 3!!!!!  Ek, Do, Teen, just like Madhuri says! (Did I forget to mention the reference to this in Wazir in my Wazir summary?  There was a reference, and it was awesome. Also, Happy Birthday Again Javed!  Only you could get away with using the lyrics “one two three, four five six seven”)

Dilwale Breaks Worldwide Record, Bajirao Lags Behind

Newer Box Office Report Available HERE!!! Dilwale still leads!

Okay, the 4 week report is out, and despite losing screens worldwide, and its steep drop off in the major Indian territories, Dilwale is far outstripping Bajirao in the global box office.

In fact, it has already beat Salman’s Kick receipts, and is coming up on Shahrukh’s own records, for Happy New Year and My Name is Khan.

All of which I predicted!  (if you follow those links, you can see my previous posts).  But, why is this happening?  Why does the global picture look so different from the local?

Update: To see how I think the new Fan “Tu Nahin Samjhega” videos relate to this, check out posts here and here.

Baazigar: SRKajol re-watch moves on! Part 2

Now I am worried, because I saw something somewhere else that indicated that Karan-Arjun came out after Baazigar.  But I am pretty sure they started filming it first.  So I am going to say my re-watch is in order of SRKajol filming interactions, rather than actual release dates.

Anyway, Baazigar!  And Shilpa Shetty!

FilmFare Awards 2016: Winners, Losers, and How Well I Guessed Them All

So, just like a couple days ago, the nominees were announced, and now the awards ceremony is already over!  That is so fast!

But, let’s be real, it was never really about the Awards anyway, it’s all about the live performances!  Which you can read about here.  But in the meantime, thanks to Times of India and their minute by minute coverage, I can tell you who won, who lost, and how right (or wrong) I was in my guesses.

Baazigar: SRKajol rewatch continues! Full Synopsis, lots of juicy Spoilers, Part 1!

Now that I have finished with Karan-Arjun, it is time to start the synopsis of the next SRKajol film!  In chronological order!  I wasn’t actually 100% confident that Karan-Arjun was before Baazigar, but #21yearsofKaranArjun was trending a couple days ago, so I guess it was!  I’ll expect for #21yearsofBaazigar to pop-up shortly.

Anyway, Baazigar!  The film that got Shahrukh his first FilmFare Award!  Onward!

More Box Office Stuff! Shahrukh wins the outer regions, Bajirao hits off center, Salman is still our Bhai

Bollywoodhungama is just the best.  They just posted the best of the box office 2015 list, broken down by territories.  I already talked about how Bajirao stacked the deck by focusing on the Bombay audience, and how Dilwale suffered by losing market share to protests. And how Salman is consistently the all India winner.  But this makes it even more apparent.

Moneyball and Shahrukh Khan: Who was really the top actor of 2015? And was it an ‘actor’ at all?

You know the movie Moneyball?  Which talked about the sabarmetric approach to baseball, that allowed every player to be a quantifiable element in a team’s success?  So, there is a constant effort to figure out a formula in Indian film that will, somehow, allow filmmakers to predict which stars will give them a hit.

Bollywoodhungama came out with a score card for 2015 for actors based on box office.  Which is always hard to balance.  They tried using two different scores, but ended up with completely contradictory results.

What is the best way to measure the star power of a Shahrukh Khan versus an Akshay Kumar?  And who really won 2015?

Shahrukh Khan Raees photos!!! Spoilers and Plot Speculation!

After a New Years vacation in Dubai with his family, SRK is back to work on Raees.  And I am excited!  My theory is, this is the movie that Dilwale was pro-actively making up for.  That is,  Dilwale has just the right amount of stupid romantic fun to balance the amount of deep thoughtful seriousness that will be in Raees.

Also, Raees is being directed by Rahul Dholakia, who’s previous film, Parzania, sounds so politically hard-hitting and emotionally draining that I have never even seen it.  Both Parzania and (supposedly) Raees will be set in Gujurat, which is another political statement.  Could this be Shahrukh’s artistic follow-up to his birthday “Intolerance” broadside attacks?

Dabboo Ratnani’s annual Calendar that isn’t a Calendar!

It’s out!  As always, launched with a big party at a gallery.  Full pictures available here (well, full pictures of the photos in frames at the gallery.  Not the actual photos.  As will be discussed below).  I will definitely be updating my computer wallpaper to the image above when I get home.

And as always I wonder, what the heck is the deal with this “calendar”?!?!?

SRKajol rewatch, Karan Arjun Part 5-Complete! Finale! Ending! All Spoiled for you right here!

Inspired by Dilwale, I am going through all previous SRKajol films in exhaustive detail!  Karan-Arjun turns out to not be that Kajol-y, but it makes up for it by being super Salman-y.  And super Amrish Puri-y.  And super 90s-y.

(also, SPOILER, in this section Amrish Puri wears a Lavender Jacket!  Just like Salman in the header image!)

Filmfare Nominations-My Predictions (Spoiler: No Shahrukh!)

So, everyone calls the FilmFares “India’s Oscars.”  But they’re not, really.  They are awards given by a filmi magazine to people who they want to feature in their magazine, or otherwise make nice with.  And they are given to people who still care about being featured in a filmi magazine and will show up to the awards ceremony.  So it is a popularity/power contest on one hand, and a test of your commitment to nurturing your career on the other.

Which is why I am hoping I can actually predict at least one winner!  (Last year, I won a “special” award from my class as the only person who managed to predict every single Oscar category wrong.  I am terrible with Hollywood, except in very certain areas.  But maybe the FilmFare’s will be my game!)

Anushka pulls off the Hatrick!!!

Just announced, Anushka’s going to be opposite Salman in Sultan!  Which means, she will be opposite all 3 Khans within 3 years (Jab Tak with SRK, PK with Aamir, and now Sultan).  Not as impressive as when Kat hit them all within 15 months (Ek Tha Tiger, Jab Tak, Dhoom 3), and she got to kiss two of them onscreen (and presumably the other in real life), but still pretty awesome!

So, how does this change my prediction for the Raees/Sultan Eid Box Office clash?

SRKajol rewatch, Karan-Arjun Part 4: Lots of Fights, some with Lightning!

So, part one had babies, part two had Kajol, part 3 had “Jaati Hoon Main”, what do we have in this part?  Well, lots of cool violence!  That’s nice, right?  Plus, one very very short SRKajol scene that, frankly, doesn’t even work that well.  Really, come for the SRKajol, stay for the bodies flung through car windows.

(bullet point version of synopsis, for full film, available here.  Part 2 here.  Part 3 here. Part 4 here.  Final part here.)

Why I hate Priyanka Chopra

UPDATE: I just want to clarify, this is not an article that gives a full overview of the situation, or that tries terribly hard to address alternative perspectives.  It’s just trying to explain my perspective on it.  So, if you already dislike Priyanka and are looking for a better way to articulate your argument, READ ON.  Or, if you know someone who dislikes her and you can’t understand why, READ ON.  But, if you like her, DON’T BOTHER.  I’m not going to give you any new information, or an argument that will convince you.  And if you know nothing about her past or personal life, DON’T BOTHER, I assume you have some basic background and I don’t include a lot of details.  It really is an article that is just about why I, personally, dislike her.  And unless you also dislike her, or know someone who does and want to understand them, it probably won’t make sense or interest you.

UPDATE 2: Okay, apparently UPDATE 1 didn’t work, and there are all sorts of people reading this who very much do not agree with it.  I have learned my lesson!  I will keep my biased personal opinions for my living room, not the internet!

I’ve left the comments up, because a lot of people made really good points.  If you read the article yesterday and have something else to say, feel free to comment.  And if you are curious about my other writing, which is much much more boring (mostly box office analysis, birthday posts, and detailed film summaries), feel free to check out the homepage of the site to see the latest posts.
