Yes, after years of resistance, I finally saw it, because my parents tied me down and made me watch it. And it is very very good, I never doubted that, but it also made me think, which is exhausting. Thinking, BLEH!

AK Vs AK Review (No Spoilers): Day-um (sp?) Motwane!!! How You Keep Topping Yourself????
Such a brilliant movie!!!! SUCH A BRILLIANT MOVIE!!!!! One of those where I paused five minutes in so I could start taking notes. I will be doing a full Annotated post later. But this is just sort of an intro to the Motwane career and a sense of the film so you can decide if you want to see it.
Continue readingCoolie No. 1 Review (SPOILERS): Silly, Happy, Farce in Which the Only Real Thing is Love
I betcha that people are going to call this movie not-feminist. Because it stars Varun Dhawan and has songs and bright colors, and therefore must be misogynist. Only darkly lit serious movies can be feminist, you know? But what I enjoyed most about this movie is the way it never made me cringe. The female characters were just people. Not saying it’s a great movie, but really, there’s nothing wrong with it! It’s fun!
Continue readingCoolie No. 1 Review (No Spoilers): A Perfectly Harmless Movie
Well, that was a nice film! Entertaining, silly, a few slightly surprising twists, and a charming central couple. And an overall fun 90s Masala kind of feel to it, bright colors and silly non-diegetic songs and all of that.
Continue readingChopsticks Review (SPOILERS): A Little Fable of a Girl and a Guy and a Goat
What a very pleasant little movie! Not a perfect movie, not a deep movie, not even that involving of a movie much of the time. But very very pleasant.
Continue readingChopsticks Review (No Spoilers): A Pleasant Little Film, No Songs But a Great Heroine
I finally watched it! Over a year after it released on Netflix and most other people saw it! But whatever, in this strange world of sliding release dates and straight to streaming products, I am still giving it a “no spoilers” and a “spoilers” separate review.
Continue readingLudo Review (SPOILERS): Love Conquers All
This movie is super fun and surprising, you will really enjoy watching it without knowing what is going to happen. So just relax and know it is generally a happy ending, watch the movie, then come back her to discuss it AFTER you have seen it.
Continue readingLudo Review (No SPOILERS): A Movie About Love and Happiness
Yaaaaay! A good happy movie! If you want a film that is satisfyingly well-made, and has a nice happy love and kindness message, you should watch this! I was very worried, because it is the kind of film that can suddenly turn dark and angry without warning (like, Super Deluxe). But no! I can report that it stays in the zone of “the world is ultimately just and people care for each other”.
Continue readingGinny Weds Sunny Review (SPOILERS): Why Does Vikrant Massay Have to Turn Into a Big Old Jerk?
I watched it! Out of curiosity after I got super mixed reports from y’all. If you like light silly farcical rom-coms made on the cheap with up and down quality, then you will enjoy this movie, whether or not you Spoil yourself here. It’s not the destination, it’s the journey. And if you don’t like them (especially with a flawed hero character), then you can still spoil yourself!
Continue readingGinny Weds Sunny Review (No SPOILERS): Light Movie With Light Misogyny
This was fun, I watched it with my friend movie group, and we had quite a bit to snark to share.
Continue readingDolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare Review (No Spoilers): An Indian Woman’s Life is Constant Misery and Pain and Compromise
Well, this is a total downer of a movie! The posters and even the title sell it as more fun happy women together sort of thing, it’s more of a “life sucks and then you die, having scratched out one small piece of happiness for yourself” kind of thing. Watch if you want a very well made and well performed version of a woman’s life in modern urban India, don’t watch if you want escapism.
Continue readingMasaba Masaba, Thoughts and Questions about the WHOLE THING
I did two posts quickly summarizing and reviewing each of the 6 episodes (first 3 and then second 3). And now, a very quick post discussing the WHOLE THING!!!
Continue readingClass of ’83 Review (No Spoilers): Solid Netflix Level Movie
In my post about all the new movies hitting streaming, I picked this one out as one that was always planned for Netflix. And now I’ve seen it, and it really really feels like a movie that was always planned for Netflix.
Continue readingDrive Review: Okay, Now I See Why Karan Had to Netflix It!
I decided to ruthlessly use my friends to make myself watch this. The pickier people in my weekly movie night group canceled this week, so I forced myself and the less-picky people to finally watch Drive. It’s a nice solid movie in almost all ways, but I did finally spot the problem that explains why Karan had to make the business decision to delay it, and finally release on Netflix.
Continue readingRaat Akeli Hai Review (SPOILERS): A Film Noir Romance
Have you been craving romance in your films? Surprisingly, you may be able to find it here! A little bit dark and less fantasy than usual, but still here. If that intrigues you, go watch the movie and then come back here and tell me how wrong/right I was.
Continue readingRaat Akeli Hai Review (No Spoilers): A Hero Who Grows as a Person, How Cool is That!
I liked this movie more than I thought I would! I was all set for dark-dark-dark, and then surprise! Character development! For once, our hero isn’t just perfect from the start. Also, really surprising developments all through, which means this review will be kind of short because I have to save the good stuff for the SPOILER review.
Continue readingShakuntala Devi Review (SPOILERS): Non-Conventional Woman Made Conventional Film Character
Well, this was a dull movie. And historically inaccurate, mostly in your usual gender normative/casteism/classism way. But also a really WEIRD homophobic thing. Just like, SO ODD. So odd that I am going to give it it’s own post for us to discuss, so look forward to that! (homosexuality post up now, go here to learn more about and discuss that aspect)
Continue readingShakuntala Devi Review (No Spoilers): A Biopic That Manages To Be Both Inaccurate and Boring
Well, this is a BORING movie! At least ridiculous Mahanati had some nice crazy melodrama in it, and ridiculous Padman had the fun invented Sonam Kapoor character, and ridiculous Rustom had uniforms. This is bad BAD history, bad BAD filmmaking, and also DULL. Blech. I’ll put it this way, only watch it if you enjoy Vidya so much you would be happy seeing her recite the phone book. Because this script is only slightly more exciting than that. Oh wait, I always like to be positive, so I should have something else to add…it’s better than Mission Mangal?
Continue readingBreathe Season 2 Final Episode Recap/Review (SPOILERS): How Much Can You Do For Family?
The final episode! Woot! All our questions answered, sort of. Enough left open to make for juicy discussion. (full index of Breathe coverage here)
Continue readingBreathe Season 2 Episode 3 Recap/Review: Men and Women
Should I be titling these by the episode titles instead of the themes I see? Oh well, too late now, and it makes more sense to me this way anyway. (full index of reviews here)
Continue readingBulbbul Review (No Spoilers): A Dark Fairy Tale that Gives Lie to the Candy-Coated History of India’s Past
Well, Anushka continues her producer mission of ripping off the covers from India’s sins of the past and present. Yet another harrowing painful examination of the patriarchy and the unrelenting torment of being a woman in India. It’s handled delicately, but there is a rape scene. And a scene of terrible male on female violence. Just disturbing stuff. Watch with the lights on during the day, don’t watch at all if you are feeling wobbly.
Continue readingThappad Review (SPOILERS): When is It Time to End a Marriage?
Such a good interesting movie! There aren’t really surprise twists and stuff, but it is a journey for sure, so you should read the No Spoiler review if you are planning to see it and let it wash over you and surprise you.
Continue readingShubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan Review (SPOILERS): A World Where Everyone is Just a Little Disappointed in Their Life
This movie has a lot of really delightful twists, so try not to spoil yourself if you can. I wrote another review with no spoilers that you can read to hear all the reasons you should see this movie and not spoil yourself!
Continue readingShubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan Review (No Spoilers): A Movie I Didn’t Like But You Will
This is the review to read before you watch it! And you should watch it because (based on the taste of the people who tend to read my reviews), you will very much enjoy it.
Continue readingWorld Famous Lover Review (No Spoilers): A Movie Written By Someone Who Thinks They Are Far Deeper Than They Are
Well, this is a dumb movie! In a way that isn’t fun-dumb, but also isn’t angry-making dumb, but rather just dumb-dumb. Like that guy at a party who you don’t actually dislike, you just really really are looking forward to not having to talk to him any more.
