Yes, after years of resistance, I finally saw it, because my parents tied me down and made me watch it. And it is very very good, I never doubted that, but it also made me think, which is exhausting. Thinking, BLEH!

Continue readingI betcha that people are going to call this movie not-feminist. Because it stars Varun Dhawan and has songs and bright colors, and therefore must be misogynist. Only darkly lit serious movies can be feminist, you know? But what I enjoyed most about this movie is the way it never made me cringe. The female characters were just people. Not saying it’s a great movie, but really, there’s nothing wrong with it! It’s fun!

Continue readingYaaaaay! A good happy movie! If you want a film that is satisfyingly well-made, and has a nice happy love and kindness message, you should watch this! I was very worried, because it is the kind of film that can suddenly turn dark and angry without warning (like, Super Deluxe). But no! I can report that it stays in the zone of “the world is ultimately just and people care for each other”.

If you like light silly farcical rom-coms made on the cheap with up and down quality, then you will enjoy this movie, whether or not you Spoil yourself here. It’s not the destination, it’s the journey. And if you don’t like them (especially with a flawed hero character), then you can still spoil yourself!

The posters and even the title sell it as more fun happy women together sort of thing, it’s more of a “life sucks and then you die, having scratched out one small piece of happiness for yourself” kind of thing. Watch if you want a very well made and well performed version of a woman’s life in modern urban India, don’t watch if you want escapism.

The pickier people in my weekly movie night group canceled this week, so I forced myself and the less-picky people to finally watch Drive. It’s a nice solid movie in almost all ways, but I did finally spot the problem that explains why Karan had to make the business decision to delay it, and finally release on Netflix.

At least ridiculous Mahanati had some nice crazy melodrama in it, and ridiculous Padman had the fun invented Sonam Kapoor character, and ridiculous Rustom had uniforms. This is bad BAD history, bad BAD filmmaking, and also DULL. Blech. I’ll put it this way, only watch it if you enjoy Vidya so much you would be happy seeing her recite the phone book. Because this script is only slightly more exciting than that. Oh wait, I always like to be positive, so I should have something else to add…it’s better than Mission Mangal?

Continue readingWell, Anushka continues her producer mission of ripping off the covers from India’s sins of the past and present. Yet another harrowing painful examination of the patriarchy and the unrelenting torment of being a woman in India. It’s handled delicately, but there is a rape scene. And a scene of terrible male on female violence. Just disturbing stuff. Watch with the lights on during the day, don’t watch at all if you are feeling wobbly.
