The last section got a little extreme with the general thematic analysis. But this time, I am going to stay strictly focused on what happens in this actual section. Or at least, that’s the goal.
I have now seen this movie 4 times, which means in theory I should be able to remember in in exact detail and give a perfect summary. But in reality means I am going to mix up the order of a couple of scenes and forget an important line and stuff. Oh well, someday my brain-recorder technology will be perfected and I won’t have to worry about this any more. (SPOILER review here, non-spoiler here, and part 1 of the summary here)
I mentioned in my SPOILER review, how this is a very very female story, both in content and style. Sure, the narrative is all about one woman’s journey, based on emotions and relationships and all that “girly” stuff. But it is also told in a very female way, more about what is unsaid than what is said, through body language and intuition and so on. Which starts in the very first series of shots.
I just watched this movie again, with someone who hadn’t seen it before, and it confirmed once again that Hrithik in the second half is really kind of dangerously angry. And that I find him much more appealing when dangerously angry than I do when just sweet and kind of dumb!
Yes, I AM going to spoil the whole movie! I feel terrible about this, considering that Shahrukh was nice enough to release it 2 days early in America so I could see it before leaving for Thanksgiving. But on the other hand, a bunch of other people in America also saw it today, and we should have a place to discuss it. And there are those people (sometimes I am one of them) who want to know how a movie ends before they even decide to see it. But if you are choosing between seeing the movie and reading this post, SEE THE MOVIE!!! It’s really really good.
Okay, back to work! Ish. I’ll still be taking things slow, but I need to do something, and I also need to finish all my thoughts on ADHM before I get too far from the last time I saw it.
Part 4! I am just zipping along! Sort of! Not really! But to be fair, I am also doing really short posts. I could probably have knocked this whole thing out in 4, if I did longer lengths. Third and final Shivaay post! I already put up a No Spoilers review, and a Spoilers review. Now it’s time for the more specific detailed summary of the whooooooooole movie.
Normally I’m not that careful about spoilers on this blog. I flag them when I put them into a post, I put up spoiler and non-spoiler reviews, but I don’t care if you read the spoiler review before you see the movie, or if you put a spoil in a comment, or whatever. However, in this case, I’d like to try to keep the experience that Karan carefully crafted for the audience. So I’m putting up this review early, so everyone who has seen it has a place to think about and talk about the film as a whole. And then the other review will be for people who haven’t seen the movie yet, but are planning to.
I’m going to put up a full summary later, probably today or tomorrow. But in the meantime, here’s a review for people who’ve seen the movie, or are never planning to see the movie and don’t care about SPOILERS.
I watched this movie months and months ago when it first arrived on American Netflix, but that was before I was blogging seriously so I didn’t pay very close attention. I wanted to watch it again, now that the remake will be releasing soon (January 13th), and think about how this film could possibly be remade.
Okay, the first half felt like it had a very clear and defined message about working hard and pursuing excellence for its own sake, with no hope of reward. And then the second half just felt all meh and mushy. And it’s when the romance was suddenly shoved in with seemingly little connection to the rest of the film. (first half summary here)
I put up my non-spoiler review up right after I watched it, but I wanted to kind of let the film percolate before I attempted my detailed summary/spoiler review. Which might mean that a miss a scene here or there, but I should have a better idea of the overall message of the film. Oh, and I let it percolate too long (or not long enough?) so this is going to be too long and end up split in two parts.

No one cares about this movie, do they? That’s kind of too bad. It’s a sweet little film, and it says something a little unusual and interesting about relationships, and also narrative structure and assumptions.
In my earlier non-Spoiler review, I mentioned that Mohenjo felt like 3 good movies smashed together into one, a romance, a political drama, and a big action movie. Now, after I’ve had time to let the movie percolate in the back of my mind, I think the romance is the best of the 3. Not by much, they are all strong, but the romance was just the slightest bit better filled in and more emotionally resonant.
I was thinking I would do a full summary for this film, like I usually do for a major release. But then I started thinking about it, and the whole movie is basically exposition. There isn’t nearly as much to talk about as usual in terms of visuals or dialogue or character moments. So I’m going to skip through it pretty quick and just lay out what happened. If you don’t want to bother seeing the movie, but are curious about how the plot plays out, you are in the right place! (if you just want a regular review, look at my first Rustom post)
This is one of those silly stupid fun movies that had a couple of moments that made me go “wait, am I imagining a hidden message here, or is it actually here?” So I am going to need your help in the comments to figure this out!
