Did anyone notice I skipped last week? I did! Travel and careful number calculations do not go together well. But now I am home again, and ready to catch up. And maybe even put up a video, if the sun comes out again. (as always numbers courtesy of renttrack by way of bollywoodhungama, full info available here)

New Youtube Video! This Week’s Box Office
Happy Wednesday! I finally got around to making this week’s box office video. Not anything really different from the box office post I already put up, but with hand gestures and stuff to make it more interesting.
Box Office: Ittefaq Hits Big, Not a Coincidence
Phew! Finally! A film doing exactly the same as it would have done last year, bring us back to “normal” instead of continuing the shocking slide downhill. (as always numbers from rentrack by way of bollywoodhungama)
Box Office: Kerala Arrives in the UK, Aamir Arrives Everywhere Else
Global Box Office is out! And once again, like last week, things look great everywhere but America. Stubborn Americans, we just don’t like anything. (as always, figures courtesy of Bollywoodhungama and Rentrack)
Box Office: Golmaal Fails to Golmaal, Secret Superstar Fails to Shine, Mersal is a Miracle
Well, this is the best week the box office globally has had in months. And it’s still not as good as, like, February of last year. Something is up, the numbers are just not coming back. (data as always comes from bollywoodhungama by way of Renttrak here)
Box Office: More of the Same
On the one hand, this is kind of depressing. On the other hand, makes it quick and easy to write these posts!
Box Office Report: Mahanubhavudu Continues the Telugu Trend, Chef Fails to Sizzle
Another depressing week at the box office! Which people are trying to spin as good thanks to Judwaa breaking Badrinath Ki Dulhania‘s record. But that was on many fewer screens with a lot less pressure, whereas right now Judwaa is the only game in town and it’s just not doing that great if you think of it that way. (as always, figures courtesy of bollywoodhungama)
Box Office (With Youtube Video Included): Judwaa Turns off the US, Spyder Scares Off the US
Well, this was a bad week! Overseas, that is. From what I am seeing, the Indian figures are still good. But overseas, we did not like things. Oh, and I’m trying something new, youtube video about all this is embedded in the post, instead of squeezing two posts out of it.
Box Office: Bhoomi Goes Bust, Nikki Zaildar 2 goes ZAM!
Another week, more of the same. Hindi big releases are record breakingly bad, small releases hold steady in weeks 4-5-6. And Telugu films look good by comparison but really aren’t. But the real interesting story is the little Punjabi film that is breaking records. (as always, figures from bollywoodhungama)
Box Office: When Word of Mouth Goes Bad
The box office figures are sooooooooooooooo bad right now, that it made me think about why exactly they are so bad, and if this is a good thing or bad thing. And I landed on “bad” and also “it’s the audience’s fault”. So get ready for me to get deep and complex towards the end!
Hindi Film 101: Top Box Office Hits 1986-2000
And now we reach the era that the majority of us are actually aware of! Yaaaaay! Which is also why this is the shortest post, because I didn’t feel the need to give nearly as much background. Feel free to take off in the comments with your on details for these films, if you want.
This Week’s Box Office Video
Mostly the same content as in this post, but in an easily digestible video format. Plus, you get to watch me do my hair and see another part of my apartment! Not for any particular reason, I was just running late this morning so I had to combine activities.
Box Office: Shubh Mangal Saavdhan Finally Gets It Up
Huh? Huh? My punning skills have come back! Okay, and they are also a little dirty. But it’s not my fault, it’s the movie! (as always, numbers courtesy of Bollywoodhungama, full figures available here)
Box Office: Arjun Reddy Wins By Default
Well, this wasn’t a great weekend! Terrible in the US, okay in some other places thanks to random spikes. Arjun Reddy is still doing good, but it looks like it is doing better than it really is just in contrast to all the others.
Jab Harry Met Sejal Reception Explained and Telugu Box Office Update
I did it! I figured out how to add a title sequence with music to my youtube videos without breaking copyright laws!!! It’s a MIRACLE!!!! Only, I can only do it using the youtube editor tool that will only be around until September 20. Oh well.
Box Office: Bareilly Ki Barfi is Still Doing Sweet, Arjun Reddy is Astounding
Well this is an exciting box office week! Not in Hindi film, Toilet and Jab Harry Met Sejal are declining, A Gentleman is flopping (even though it is SO GOOD! People are stupid), Bareilly Ki Barfi is holding steady in it’s small way. No no, it’s the southern market that is FINALLY healthy again. Well, Telugu. Tamil is still on life support.
Box Office Report: Bareilly Ki Barfi Does Sweet Business
Well this is an interesting week! And, hopefully, a sign of things to come. The big big films continued to underperform, but a small sweet film did much better than it should have. Seeing as we are entering a 3 month period of small sweet films and no big films, this is all good! (as always, numbers courtesy of BollywoodHungama and Rentrack. Full info available here)
Box Office: Toilet Goes the Other Way in Australia
Huh? Huh? How great is that headline! If you have previously run across the myth of the Coriolis effect that doesn’t actually work that way? Because otherwise it doesn’t make any sense. I may have overreached. (as always figures are from bollywoodhungama)
Hello Youtube Focus Group! New Video on Box Office
Have I mentioned that technology hates me? Or at least, doesn’t like me much? Following your notes on my last post, I tried a fast-talking excited video. And then after 3 days of trying, have totally failed to figure out how to add graphics (the other big suggestion). So put a pin in the graphics requests (unless you have a suggestion for a free program I can download to do them), and just focus on the talking head part of it.
Box Office: Jab Harry Met Sejal, Not As Bad As it Could Be!
Okay, are we all ready to set aside our expectations and our prejudices and look at raw figures? Are we excited? Do we have our calculators out and our common sense hats on? Are we ready to try to figure out a pun based on the title of this movie, because I couldn’t and I need help? (The best I could come up with was “Jab Harry Met Slow Business”, which isn’t great).
Box Office: Mubarakan Money, Vikram Vedha Volume, Fidaa Phenomenal
Yeah, nothing is ever going to be as pun friendly as Tubelight. Even Toilet, when it comes, will be just too obvious, no scope for invention. And this week I have to make do with alliteration. (background on box office available in my big discussion post here, as always, full figures available at bollywoodhungama here)
Box Office Report: Munna Michael is Not the One
Does that headline work? I debated it for quite a bit. I think it does. Anyway, Munna Michael isn’t even really the big news this week, because we all kind of knew it would flop, that’s not exactly “news”. No, the news is over in the Punjabi world! And a little bit Tamil and Telugu.
Jagga Jasoos Box Office and My Blog Views
This is barely worthy of a post, but I found it interesting, and thought I might as well pass it along. So if you are desperately eager for an interesting thought about media integration and stuff, here it is!
Box Office Report: Jagga Jasoos Lays an Ostrich Sized Egg
I miss Tubelight! There are no good Jagga Jasoos puns. I had to full back on jokes related to actual content. Blech! At least if Munna Michael fails next week I have that whole rich thread of Michael Jackson song titles to play with. Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, that’s going to be just the best week! (as always, figures courtesy of rentrack by way of bollywoodhungama)
Box Office Report: Mom Does Good, Ninnu Kori Does Very Good
I’m gonna try to be good and get back on the Box Office report wagon. Because it really doesn’t mean anything unless you do it every week so you have context. Even if there isn’t that much of a story this week.
