Forbes came out with their top earning actresses list yesterday, and the top earning actors list today. While yesterday Deepika was the only Indian news, today there are FOUR Indian actors on the list. Plus Jackie Chan right at the top at number 2. So, yeah, Hollywood watch out! Asia is coming for you! (also, Shahrukh is the highest Indian on the list! Woot-woot!)
I am going to be just super self-indulgent and use this holiday as an excuse to post a bunch of cute photos/videos of movie stars with babies. And as babies. And other babies who love movie stars.
Full disclosure: I’m coming up on my 1 year blog anniversary in a few months, and I want to make it to a thousand posts before then. So get used to lots tiny little posts where you think, “wait, why didn’t she just combine this with the earlier post?”
I can’t tell if there is a lot of big news today, or just so much little news that it all starts to feel big.

Happy Raksha Bandhan! A holiday I don’t get to celebrate at all, because there are no brothers in my family. Yes, even if I count cousins. All girls, all the time, both mother and father’s side of the family. But, at least I can watch movies and pretend this is what it would be like if I had a brother or a cousin-brother.

Oh dear, not a good day for Salman or Shahrukh, and I can’t help but feel it is partly my fault! As an American, and part of “The Internet.”
Two trailers that I haven’t gotten around to discussing yet, and just to round out the post, my favorite song from KANK (actually, one of my all time favorite songs), in honor of the 10 year anniversary of its release.
I really wanted to do 3 news stories about Salman, so I could have a nice structure for my headline, but no luck! And also no luck in only doing one on him and 2 on someone else, because his 2 stories today are too big to ignore. And then I had to shove a 4th story in there because the Shahrukh rumor is too good to ignore. It’s all out of balance!!! Oh well.
Okay, I’ve talked about all the important Devdases, all the good ones that are closely related to the novel and deal with the ideas of hidden tragedies and casual disasters and all those cool things. Time to deal with the one that is just really really really pretty!
Devdas! Or rather, Devdas, Devdas, Devdas, Devdas, Devdas, Devdas. Because I have now read the original novel, and seen 5 separate film versions. I wrote about Dev D already, the most inventive and yet faithful remake. Now, I want to talk about the PC Barua Hindi version from 1936, and the Bimal Roy Hindi version from 1955. I have to talk about them together, because they are so similar, they really can’t be separated. And because I am talking about two movies, this post is going to be split into two parts.
Already put up a post about the trailers that are out today, but there were a couple of interesting news stories today, and one really cute picture, so I just have to talk about them too!
I finally saw Oh Darling Yeh Hai India! Now I just need to watch Guddu and Devdas, and I will have seen every Shahrukh movie ever.
I already did a detailed discussion yesterday comparing and contrasting the first halves of DDLJ and Humpty. And that got so long that I decided to break at intermission and talk about the second half today. This may be slightly too much thought to put in to Humpty (although it is a very good movie. With a terrible title), but it is interesting as an example of how DDLJ has forever changed and influenced the Indian romance film.
In my last fanvid post, I tried really hard to break out of my rut and move past the SRKajol fanvids that I have been watching every night before I go to bed since college. But that was so haaaaaaaaaaaard! I needed something to reassure me after all that, so I went right back to the SRKajol fanvid teat.
I just watched Humpty Sharma again, for like the 7th time. But it was interesting watching it now, while I am in the middle of my DDLJ recap. So I was hyper aware of what it took from DDLJ and what it got rid of.
Finally! Finally a good news day! So good, that box office is going to get its own little post! Because there is too much else to talk about.
I broke off sort of in the middle of a scene last time, because I was going soooooooooooo slowly, and because there was so much important stuff to cover! But now I’m back, and I’m going to get through to the moment when I fell in love with Shahrukh 12 years ago. Actually, I think it was 12 years ago this month. It was during summer school, and July sounds about right.

This isn’t just Shahrukh making his move on Kajol in the context of this film, this is Shahrukh making his move on, well, the world! It is in this next series of scenes that he turned from “promising young actor who has a certain something” into “Godlike Superstar”. What happened to the scandals? The nice juicy scandals? Or even a new film announcement! Or rumor! I don’t know, it just felt like there used to be more news in these news round-ups. Oh well, at least this one has some nice pictures.
I’m back to DDLJ! Mostly because I have been so busy watching Sultan in theaters (4th time tomorrow) that I haven’t had a chance to watch any other movies at home. But DDLJ is always there for me.

Well, “trailers”. There is a legitimate new trailer for Mohenjo Daro, but there is just a first look image for Baar Baar Dekho, which I actually forgot was even happening. This is what happens when you don’t cast any big names in your film! The gossip press doesn’t feel the need to keep us updated on the filming and it ends up being ready for release without anyone realizing it.
A mixture of set photos, first looks, and announcements. Thank goodness, we are preparing for the massive Independence Day through Republic Day release schedule. My favorite time of year!
I’ve been taking a long break from this, partly because Fan came out and it was time to move on to other things, partly because the streaming version I bought on Amazon didn’t have the next scene included. But now I am back! By popular demand, and also because there is another movie with Shahrukh (not a “Shahrukh movie”, but at least he’s in it for a bit) coming out in a few months.
