I was talking with my friend yesterday about how hating Ranbir makes us all so happy, and it made me think that I should repost something to sort of give background on how myself and our small community has for a while been seeing him as a little toxic.

Wednesday Watching Post: What Are You Reading and Watching and Thinking and Listening to on Imtiaz Ali’s birthday?
Happy Wednesday!!!! I had a very exciting morning. I woke up early and decided to try to drive into the city from Wisconsin before work instead of after, since the traffic would be so much easier. So, I rushed around closing windows and locking doors and putting away kayaks and walking dogs and then leaped in the car. Drove the highway route and went super super fast, and then WAS STILL LATE FOR WORK! Because my parents’ neighborhood has NO PARKING!!!! But now, finally, I am in my bedroom/office at my parents all settled.
Continue readingHappy Birthday Sara Ali Khan! My Review of Your Performance I Thought Was Brilliant (even if no one else did), Love Aaj Kal 2020
Yep, it’s a good movie! And Karthik and Sara both do wonderful jobs, especially Sara. Once again, Imtiaz’s vision failed to be captured by the trailers.
Continue readingDiscussion Post: Who Are Your Favorite Indian Director(s)?
I can’t believe we haven’t had this post before! It’s, like, film geek discussion 101! Oh well, better late than never.
Continue readingImtiaz Ali and Highway and Love Aaj Kal 2020: Why the Audience Can’t Relate to Female Lead Films
Love Aaj Kal 2020 is on Netflix and if you don’t like it, it means you are secretly a male chauvinist. No, not really, that’s a terrible game to play with movies. But I do think a lot of the response to the film is because of anti-female prejudice.
Continue readingLove Aaj Kal 2020: An Internal Character Drama About Modern Women Dressed Up As a Love Story
Yep, it’s a good movie! And Karthik and Sara both do wonderful jobs, especially Sara. Once again, Imtiaz’s vision failed to be captured by the trailers.
Continue readingLove Aaj Kal 2 Review (SPOILERS): A Beautiful Exploration of How Things Have Gotten Better For Women in Romance in the Past 30 Years
Such a good movie! I’m SHOCKED! The trailers looked really terrible, and the concept made no sense (why remake a movie that is barely 10 years old?), and it was filmed in what felt like no time at all. And then it turns out to be a really deep interesting consideration of the problems of women in modern India. Who’d have thought?
Continue readingLove Aaj Kal 2020 Review (No Spoilers): Another Beautiful Imtiaz Ali Romance
Yep, it’s a good movie! And Karthik and Sara both do wonderful jobs, especially Sara. Once again, Imtiaz’s vision failed to be captured by the trailers.
Continue readingAnother Terrible Trailer! For Love Aaj Kal 2 This Time
What has happened to the trialer makers of Hindi film???? Have they all been kidnapped and their incompetent teenage children are trying to take over? Was there some horrible brain weapon that wiped their memories? Or did they go on strike and instead Hindi filmmakers have to use slave labor from some country that doesn’t even speak Hindi?
Continue readingDirectors Week: Imtiaz, and Imtiaz and Ranbir
I was gonna write about Imtiaz, but then I realized I really had to write about two directos. One for Imtiaz and Ranbir, one for Imtiaz and anyone else.
Continue readingRockstar: A Celebration of an Average Man with Average Problems Elevated to a God
Blech! I don’t like this movie. If you like this movie, DON’T READ THIS REVIEW. Why would you do that to yourself? Go about your life and continue to be happy and loving. But if you also hate this movie, come over here by me and we can hate it together.
Continue readingTheme Week Announcement! Directors I Like (in honor of Gautham Menon’s new movie)
Isn’t that nice and specific? These are not the best directors, or even a fair cross-section of directors, they are just Directors I Like. And you can’t judge me for any of them, even Puri Jugannadh, because there is no accounting for taste.
Continue readingSunday ReRun: Socha Na Tha, Imtiaz Ali’s First Great Romance
I wrote this review a long long time ago, and it isn’t as good as the film deserves. So I did quite a bit of rewriting before reposting it, fun for those of you who remember the original post! There’s still something new for you!
Continue readingFriday Classics: Highway, the Darker Version of Jab Harry Met Sejal
This is a movie so powerful, and so frustrating, that I both can’t bring myself to rewatch it for this review, and don’t need to because I remember it so well. I hope some of you managed to watch it recently so you can join in the comments with your own impressions!
Continue readingNews Round-Up: Industrial Stories! Money Money Money Money
Oh boy! My favorite juicy scandalous fascinating addictive news items! That’s right, INSIDE INDUSTRY BUSINESS STORIES! Let’s get into contracts and star rates and all kinds of fun stuff like that! No joke, I really do find these stories way way way more fun to talk about than, like Anushka-Virat wedding news. Maybe you do to! And even if you don’t, you can just not read this! That works too.
News Round-Up: Amitabh Has Money, Abhishek has a New Manager, Hichki Had an Elaborate Development Process, Shahid Has a New Career
Well this is an interesting batch of news in terms of changing industrial forces! Managers, story rights, all kinds of things that didn’t used to exist and may not necessarily result in a different or superior end product.
Happy Jab Harry Met Sejal Week! The Uniqueness of an Imtiaz Ali Romance
I love Imtiaz Ali romances, because he does something really interesting with changing what we think of as “romance”. I sometimes hate Imtiaz Ali romances because it feels like he gets caught up in what he finds interesting and loses track of the basic definition of romance. You know, that it usually involves two people, not just one.
Jab Harry Met Sejal, FIRST SONG!!! Pritam Writes the Sound of Sunshine Again
No subtitles though. Which, following my theory from yesterday, means that Shahrukh used to love me and was telling me through subtitling his videos. But now no longer loves me and is breaking up with me through NOT subtitling his videos. WHY SHAHRUKH???? WHY???? I’ll change for you! I’ll do whatever you ask! Just take me back!
Jab Harry Met Sejal: Shahrukh Saw My Tweets and Added Subtitles! He Does Love Me! Also, New Teaser
Well, apparently the promotion train is moving at an express pace, and I will need to put up one of these posts every day for the next month and a half (last one here). I guess I am okay with that. Anyway, New Teaser! More importantly, Subtitles!!! Most importantly, Shahrukh loves me and wants me to be happy and is showing it through subtitles on his trailers! I should take this as a sign of his undying devotion to me and go be a Gaurav outside Mannat, right?
News about Upcoming Rom-Coms! Half Girlfriend, Raabta, and Untitled Shahrukh!!!!
I turn on twitter this morning, and boom! Romance everywhere! Bigger version of the Shahrukh poster (still no title), new Half-Girlfriend song, and people are still tweeting about the last Raabta song.
Two News Items Too Big To Ignore: National Film Awards and New Shahrukh Stills!
Long time readers may have noticed that my news round-up posts have been less common lately. I am sooooooooo busy writing up Hindi Film 101 and answering Monday questions and all my other new-ish features that I haven’t had as much time for news. But today there were two big things that I just can’t ignore! Both of which I learned about through twitter (I do still follow @iamsrk and @karanjohar and all the other big newsmakers of the industry)
First Look at SRK’s Imtiaz Ali Movie!!!!
Yaaay! First look and a release date! But no title. And, more interesting (to me), Salman tweeted the first look, not Shahrukh. They did something similar with the Dangal first look, and I think also Sultan?
News Round-Up: On Set Photos, and Dil Se
This is all from twitter, basically. Sometimes, that’s all you need! The stars give you your stories directly.
