I’ll be putting up a separate SPOILERS review, but there really isn’t much to worry about spoiling. We’ve all seen this kind of movie before, we know what it’s going to be like and what will happen. So, you can read this review, and then see the movie, and then read the SPOILERS review, or you can just read them both and then decide if you want to watch it.
(This is an updated and reposted post) If you’d asked me 9 years ago when Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na came out, I never would have said that Emraan would be my favorite Imraan/Emraan. But today, oh my goodness! He has beaten his homonym by a mile! And today he is 39 and still going strong! Here are 39 separate reasons I love him (yes, most of them are videos).
My second TGIF! For the birthday girl. And I am sleepy (Dog got me up again last night, and there is STILL no adoption on the horizon), so I am going to be lazy: Rani Mukherjee Holding Things.
Well, this is a puzzle! Emraan’s birthday tomorrow and Rani’s on Wednesday, who gets top honors on the TGIF posts? I can’t decide, so I am splitting it, Emraan first and then Rani.
I thought this was a movie so strange and unpopular that there was no reason for me to ever write about it, but then in the comments on my post on overlooked rom-coms, we got to talking, and turns out other people also like it, so I might as well talk about it.
I already did a post on the “fake” problem of Shahrukh and women, and the “real” problem. Now, let’s look at the “fake” problem of Shahrukh and his movies and the “real” problem.
I considered “myths”, but that’s not quite right. There are a combination of Persian legends, Punjabi folk tales, and of course the Puranic stories of Ram and Sita, which are all important to know if you watch Hindi film because they influence the way the narratives play out. Luckily, many of them are summarized and represented through simple songs!
There are two reasons I want to write this post. First, I’m concerned that my fandom for Shahrukh may be seen as blinding me to his flaws and thereby lowering the power of my analytical voice in general. Second, I’m concerned that there is a growing chorus of criticism of things that are NOT his flaws which are obscuring the real problems in two areas: his issues as a representative of women in India, and his issues in selling the audience on his recent films. This also, by the way, doesn’t mean that I think he is a bad actor or a bad person, it is just pointing out that I am not blind and aware he does have faults.
Someone just asked in a comment what all the songs are in “The Medley” from Mujshe Dosti Karoge and I thought “sure, that seems like a reasonable one off post to throw up for Rani’s birthday!” I know I can’t identify all the songs, but I can come close and hopefully you in the comments can fill in the rest.
Happy Rani’s Birthday! And after Sridevi, she becomes the first actress to have a full film index all to herself.
There’s a lot of roles that Rani does well, but another actress could do okay. But this is one of those rare movies that truly only Rani could play.
This is one of my all time favorite movies, thrilled to have an excuse to repost this review!
This is a bit of a re-gifting, it’s the review I wrote in honor of her birthday last year. But it’s still a good movie, so why not?
I originally wrote this post for Preity’s birthday, and I still think it is a great unusual role for her, but Rani’s role and performance is pretty good too!
This is such a wonderful movie in so many ways, a very silly lightweight film, but a happy one.

Happy Tuesday! Did not mean to make this another Sridevi week, I was looking for something intelligent and intense and on youtube with subtitles, and I landed on this film. And then later learned it was Sridevi’s second major role.
It is a truth universally acknowledged that Rani and Abhishek had the better chemistry together than either of them had with any other co-star. So, in honor of Rani’s birthday, let us take a look at that chemistry in fanvid form!
Box Office! I’m back! After several weeks away. I missed the Pari reports, but now I am back because I am so curious about how Raid did. (as always, figures from renttrack by way of bollywoodhungama)
This was a movie I picked because a) it has Jayasurya, b) it was on HotStar, and c) it looked like something that I could watch while doing dishes and being in and out of the room. And all of these things were true! Especially the last.
Follow up to my Rom-Com post! And one I actually feel more deeply about, there are a lot of great clever action films out there that don’t get attention while big stupid ones do, a much bigger problem with action than in the rom-com genre.
