Happy Ganesh Chaturthi! A Festival that Welcomes All Worshippers Equally

Oh boy, I get to explain someone else’s religion/culture! That’s, like, the worst possible thing a person can do. Why am I doing it? I don’t know, I have this need to spread knowledge even when it is outside of my own culture. Forgive me, ignore me because I am white if you want, but the data I am sharing is the best most reliable information I can find.

Drive Review: Okay, Now I See Why Karan Had to Netflix It!

I decided to ruthlessly use my friends to make myself watch this. The pickier people in my weekly movie night group canceled this week, so I forced myself and the less-picky people to finally watch Drive. It’s a nice solid movie in almost all ways, but I did finally spot the problem that explains why Karan had to make the business decision to delay it, and finally release on Netflix.

Decision Time! Do We Keep Friday WatchAlongs and, If So, Do We Keep Them on Friday at 3pm???

My goodness, I think it’s been about 5 months! Anyway, things have changed, folks are going back to “school” and some of you have shifting work and family and stuff responsibilities, plus we’ve gotten a little used to “the new normal”. With all of that in mind, I wanted to take the DCIB temperature on if we need to update our routine.

Another Internet Thinky Post! When the People Speaking for a Community, Drown Out the Voices of the Actual Community

I just have so much to say about internet dialogue! And the Gunjan Saxena debate that I am listening to second hand thanks to y’all has given me a new thing to think about. Also, once again, NO POLITICS. We have been doing fabulously with productive conversations about communication and internet culture without political specifics, let’s keep that up!

Homeschool Discussion Area: I Was Homeschooled, Some Of You Are Now Homeschooling, Let’s Talk and Trade Resources

I have spent the past 25 years being special and weird and strange because I was homeschooled, and now every kid in the world is gonna be the same as me! Not fair! I kind of liked being special and weird! UPDATE: I’m gonna go ahead and stick this to the top of the blog until after Labor Day, so you can all vent/discuss the rocky start to your school years. We have at least two teachers here, and 4 parents, and multiple students from high school up. Share your experiences and resources and complain about your stresses!

Happy Birthday Daler Mehndi! Your Best Movie (I Think), Mirzya

WARNING!  This is a freakishly long review!!!!  It’s a combination of the no spoiler and spoiler reviews I originally posted, and also I got very excited about the spoiler review and it was already super long even before I combined the two.  So if you loved loved loved this movie, enjoy!  And if you just love over-analysis, enjoy!  And if neither of those things are true, skip! Oh, and also, you should really really watch this movie. It’s beautiful and over the top and melodramatic and everything good.

Thinky Post: “Cancel Culture” versus “Boycott Culture”, US versus India

First, NO POLITICS!!!! Which is going to be hard, because basically all social media campaigns in India are supported by paid political agents. That’s not me being paranoid, that is a fact, and it is why no intelligent person should treat social media opinions on Indian issues seriously. Make up your own mind without regard to what social media is saying. But I am going to frame this discussion in a more general way, which allows for a bigger debate beyond politics. Mostly. (oh, and thank you Courtney for the idea!)

Monday Morning Questions: What Do You Want to Ask Me the Day I Was Published on ArmchairJournal.com?

Happy Monday! One of the lovely commentators here linked me up with a website where she is doing an internship, and they gave me a chance to write an article. And in return, of course I promised to promote the article/them on my own sites (so, here, since I do nothing else on The Internet). Here you go, https://armchairjournal.com/could-covid-save-the-single-screen-theater/

Happy Birthday Saif! Your Other Light Happy Mature Movie That I Didn’t Appreciate Enough at the Time, Chef!

I reread my review, and I think I might have been a little too hard on the film. Yes, it was an almost line by line remake, yes some things didn’t really work, but it was harmless, and it had a mature hero trying to figure out how to be a father, and just generally some good stuff we don’t usually see in Hindi film.

Happy Birthday Saif! Your Most Recent Happy Light Mature Witty Film, Jiwani Jaanemann!

Not saying this is a perfect movie, some bits are a bit rushed, and there isn’t enough Farida, or enough depth to it. But it’s on the whole a very pleasant happy movie with a nice modern message about growing up and family and good things. The kind of movie I wish we could see more of, and that I am very glad Saif is making.

Silly Sunday: My Recent Binge Watches Remade, Wings and Midsomer Murders and Miranda

Most of you have seen some to none of these, don’t care! For my own happiness, I am going to play with how they could be turned into Indian movies/TV shows. And I guess you should all watch them? If you like pleasant lowkey shows that leave you smiling and ready for bed, these are very good options.
