Well, the movie was fine, low budget and quick moving and all that. But the overall arc of the story was really interesting in a way that makes me want to read the book it is based on, because it doesn’t go quite the way you think it will.

Drive Review: Okay, Now I See Why Karan Had to Netflix It!
I decided to ruthlessly use my friends to make myself watch this. The pickier people in my weekly movie night group canceled this week, so I forced myself and the less-picky people to finally watch Drive. It’s a nice solid movie in almost all ways, but I did finally spot the problem that explains why Karan had to make the business decision to delay it, and finally release on Netflix.
Continue readingHappy Birthday Sridevi! A Review of Your Final Film, Dark and Strong and Feminist, Mom
I’ve reposted this review a bunch of times, but turns out that I never added on the “no spoiler” part to a repost before. So, yaaaay! Something to read if you are deciding if you want to watch this movie and don’t want to be spoiled! And then spoilers after the SPOILER bar, if you do want to be spoiled.
Continue readingRaat Akeli Hai Review (SPOILERS): A Film Noir Romance
Have you been craving romance in your films? Surprisingly, you may be able to find it here! A little bit dark and less fantasy than usual, but still here. If that intrigues you, go watch the movie and then come back here and tell me how wrong/right I was.
Continue readingShakuntala Devi Review (SPOILERS): Non-Conventional Woman Made Conventional Film Character
Well, this was a dull movie. And historically inaccurate, mostly in your usual gender normative/casteism/classism way. But also a really WEIRD homophobic thing. Just like, SO ODD. So odd that I am going to give it it’s own post for us to discuss, so look forward to that! (homosexuality post up now, go here to learn more about and discuss that aspect)
Continue readingBreathe: Into the Shadows Review (SPOILERS): When Does Protecting Your Loved Ones Go Too Far?
I did quick episode by episode reviews, this is where I am going to summarize and review the whole darn thing, start to finish. If it’s not your cup of tea but you are vaguely curious what the plot is, read this one. Oh boy! (full index of all reviews here)
Continue readingBreathe Season 2 Final Episode Recap/Review (SPOILERS): How Much Can You Do For Family?
The final episode! Woot! All our questions answered, sort of. Enough left open to make for juicy discussion. (full index of Breathe coverage here)
Continue readingBreathe Season 2 Episode 11 Recap/Review: Isolation
Great episode, so much happens, and I find it all fairly believable! You know, grading on a curve and all of that. (full index of Breathe reviews here)
Continue readingBreathe Season 2 Episode 9 Recap/Review: The Selfishness of Fear
Okay, either this episode is better than the last few, or I’m just in a better mood watching it. Let’s say the first! Once again, I can find a strong central theme tying it all together, and the past storyline ties much more firmly into the present than in other episodes. (full index here)
Continue readingBreathe Season 2 Episode 7: The Stakes Get Lower
Well, the show is struggling a bit to come back from that really not very logical twist. It tries to build up more of a backstory for how it happened, but the bigger issue is that it makes the stakes so much lower, and therefore the tension we need to want to keep walking has kind of gone away. (full index of reviews here)
Continue readingBreathe Season 2 Episode 5 Recap/Review: Connections
Now I’m getting a little worried. A lot moves forward in this episode, and we aren’t even halfway down with the season. Which means in order to not resolve it all within the next couple episodes, there will have to be some pretty ridiculous twists. Or maybe not! Maybe they will pull it off. But I’m worried. (index of reviews here)
Continue readingBreathe Season 2 Episode 4 Recap/Review: Surprising New Couples (Lesbians!)
If I am reading this correctly, this season has 12 episodes instead of 8 in the first season. Sometimes longer seasons can lead to confusion and blind alleys in the narrative as the show tries to fill more time than expected. So far, I think this show is going the opposite direction. The first season sometimes felt rushed, and too many things at once. This season is much more relaxed and enjoying the journey. (full index of reviews here)
Continue readingBreathe Season 2 Episode 2 Recap/Review: Partnerships
Episode 2! This is a good series to do episode by episode reviews, each seems to have a kind of individual overriding theme that I can use for discussion. (full index here)
Continue readingBreathe Season 2 Episode 1 Recap/Review: Suffocation of Time Passing
Woot, season 2! Like Season 1, this is a good solid procedural limited series thriller. Not mind-blowingly good, no better than dozens of similar shows. But no worse either, and watching these familiar actors shift their performance style from the melodrama of Indian film work to the subtle close up style acting of TV thrillers is fun. (full index of reviews here)
Continue readingAxone Review (SPOILERS): When Even the Smallest Things Are Hard
I already put up a No Spoilers review, I recommend you read that if you want a sense of the film as a whole to decide if you want to watch it. This is the review for those who have already seen it and want to discuss it.
Continue readingGulabo Sitabo Review (SPOILERS): Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam for the Modern Era
Huh. Interesting idea at the center of this, which somehow completely failed to pay off. Oh well, sometimes these movies can be more fun to talk about than to watch.
Continue readingHappy Sonakshi Sinha Day! Akira, Her Most Special Movie
This movie is so good! And interesting! And unique! And Sonakshi is amazing in it. Seriously, you should all watch it. And maybe not read this review, because it is crazy long.
Continue readingLove Aaj Kal 2020: An Internal Character Drama About Modern Women Dressed Up As a Love Story
Yep, it’s a good movie! And Karthik and Sara both do wonderful jobs, especially Sara. Once again, Imtiaz’s vision failed to be captured by the trailers.
Continue readingHeer FINAL EPISODE! How Does It End and What Do We Think About the Whole Thing?
I finished it! YAAAAAY!!!! Strange sense of accomplishment, finishing a TV serial. Anyway, I did it! And now all of you can watch at your on pace and comment as you go along, and eventually join me here at the finish line.
Continue readingHeer Episodes 19-21: Cranking Up to the Finale! Resolutions Coming Up Everywhere!
I am resisting watching the final episode, so I can do one last review for that/the whole season combined. But these are all the almost-finale episodes that get us right up to the happy ending, without quit going all the way. (Heer reviews index here)
Continue readingHeer Episodes 16-18: Marriage Problems, All Over the Place
Well, this show does not want me to get married! We’ve got three married couples now, and they are all miserable. I assume they will be happy some way or the other by the end of things, but right now they are miserable. (full index of Heer reviews here)
Continue readingLittle Things Season 3 Episode 8: Is This a Break Up or an Engagement? Or Somehow Both and Neither?
This is a very interesting open ending. It could be the end of the whole story for these characters, or the start of their next chapter, and the show leaves it open. Because right now, it is open for them too. (Little Things review index here)
Continue readingLittle Things Season 3 Episode 7: How Did We Get Here
Yet again, the show fills in backstory and it makes you go “yeah, that seems right” as though it had been written all along. Because maybe it had, they just hadn’t filmed it yet. (Little Things Review index here)
Continue readingLittle Things Season 3 Episode 6: Messy Re-Entry
Hey, this episode is about why I decided not to go over to my apartment this weekend and instead stay at their place! It’s not the leaving, it’s the coming back, all those little micro-adjustments. And I’m just talking about an hour of adjustment following two days away, this episode is about the whole messy return after 6 months apart. Blech!
Continue readingHeer Episodes 7-9: Romance!!!
Oh my, things are happening again! Thank goodness, I was getting awfully bored with just “let’s learn about this new household”. Time for some movement! (Heer reviews index here)
