(This was not posted yesterday as usual because of this) Only 2 days left until Badrinath comes out! I am all excited, and also trying to figure out my viewing strategy. Friday night viewing will be me and my regular Friday friend. And maybe also two other people. Even 3 more is fine, but more than that and I ran out of car space. Maybe we can tie some more folks onto the roof? Or I can run a shuttle system to bring them in shifts?
No Posts Today-A Day Without Women
I can’t afford to take the day off work, but I can take a day off of blogging. Regular posts will resume after midnight on 3/9/2017. If you are a man, feel free to keep commenting, and I will respond tomorrow. If you are a woman, you can comment or not, depending on how you feel.
In the meantime, here is more information about this protest: https://www.womensmarch.com/womensday/
And here is a place to donate to and defend Planned Parenthood:

Karan Versus Kangana on Koffee and Beyond
Success! I found the Kangana Koffee! Despite it being “not available in your region” on the HotStar website and “content pulled at the request of…” on most other sites. I did finally find it on one site, which I am keeping to myself, and successfully watched it! So now I can talk intelligently both about the episode and about Karan’s recent comments.
Happy International Women’s Day! Here are some International Women!
(This is a reposted and Updated post from last year)
There are so many many many options for a Women’s Day post, that it kind of blew my mind and I couldn’t decide! Most empowering films for women? Most feminist songs? My favorite female characters?
Anyway, I decided to switch focus to the “International” part of it, and look at the most International women in Indian film!
Hindi Film 101: Meena Kumari Part 1, The Years as a Daughter
I’m finally doing Meena Kumari! Because she was consistently the second choice every time I gave you options. And because I have this book (be aware, it’s written in an unusual style for a bio. But it’s still fun!) for a source, so it’s easy. The thing with Meena, is that she was never able to really live alone or control her own destiny, she just went from man to man, starting with her father.
Monday Malayalam: Fukri, I Still Have a Crush on Jayasurya
I mentioned last Monday that I saw two Malayalam movies in the theater. This was the other one! The showtime gods were kind to me, I realized I could catch a matinee of Ezra, grab a lassi at the concession counter, and then move right into the show for Fukri.
Global Box Office Report: What is Commando 2 Anyway?
You know that feeling when you are at a party and everyone else is sharing a joke but you missed the beginning and aren’t sure why they are laughing or if it was actually funny? That’s how I feel about Commando 2. Suddenly it’s everywhere, and I have no idea what it is or why I should care!
Monday Morning Questions Post: Badrinath Week Edition!
Is the rest of the world as excited about Badrinath as our little blog community is? I know Karan’s been tweeting like crazy and all that, but Humpty Sharma wasn’t actually THAT successful. Anyway, I know I am excited at least! And that several of the rest of you are too. And here is where you can ask me anything related to Badrinath, or anything else, as we enter the homestretch before release.
Silly Sunday Speculative Post: Shakespeare Continued! How Can We Fix and Indianize Shakespeare’s Most Difficult Comedy?
The Taming of the Shrew, obviously. It’s a super fun play with great characters and plot and some really nice speeches. But also a big bad misogyny section right in the middle that it is very hard to deal with without losing that “comic” touch. But I think we can do it! With careful casting and some gently massaging of the plot.
Karan Babies: The Twitter Analysis!
I’m so excited I can’t sleep, so I started scouring twitter for “evidence”. Of what, I’m not sure. People who are also excited about babies?
Karan Johar Babies: What We Know So Far
I got a text and a tweet while at a tea room celebrating a friend’s birthday. And then immediately had to tell everyone at the table, and then text everyone I know, and then write an emergency blog post so you could all share in the joy. But now I am home, and I can scour all my favorite internet sources and see what I can find out!
Important News! Karan Johar just had twins!!!!!!
Boy and girl, by surrogate. No names announced yet. I’ll put up a more in depth post in a bit. But yay!
Guide Part 3: The Actual Film, the Ending, and Dev Anand
Guide part 3! This is what happens when I write about Great Movies, I just go on and on and don’t know how to stop (16 parts into DDLJ, by the way, and not even to intermission). But I am going to be firm with myself this time and try to keep it down to just 3 parts. Especially because, unlike DDLJ, this isn’t a movie all my readers will necessarily have seen. (part 1 gives no plot details of the film, just background on the pre-production, part 2 starts with a general discussion of the style and techniques of the film before getting into plot. Read them both before you read this, because I will be referring back!)
DVD Update: I Have SO MANY!!!
This is really nothing anyone is probably interested in, but I felt the need to share with you, my wider blog audience, the news of my latest DVD shipment since you were an integral part of it all.
TGIF Post: Old is Gold or New is True?
Okay, you ready for deep deep thoughts and discussion? This came up in my Bhootnath post earlier today, is it better to have an unattractive version of an old favorite, or a perfect shining new version of a newcomer? And, to make this even more challenging, what if they are in the same family? Ready to put on your thinking caps and make some votes? (just post a comment if you want with all your choices for 1 through 7)
Last Badrinath Song! 7 Days to Go!
Final trailer! And it is a mystifying one. I just cannot figure out how it fits in with the other bits of the movie that we have seen so far. Thank goodness I only have 7 more days until I can see the whole thing!
Bhootnath: SRK With Bad Hair or Priyanshu Chatterjee, Who Is Hotter?
I asked around and datablue confirmed that Bhootnath is a must see for SRK hardcore fans, and T.J Stevens said it was one of her favorite films as a kid (HOW OLD AM I???? I remember when it came out and I was already out of college! I am a MILLION YEARS OLD!!!). So, anyway, I decided to see if I could squeeze it in between getting dressed in the morning and having dinner last night. I totally could! It does not require a lot of attention.
Two Unrelated Videos: Sarkar 3 and Prithviraj!
Mohzin on my Wednesday Watching post recommended a new interview with Prithviraj, which I was able to watch after work today, and it was fascinating! Probably in a bunch of ways I missed, but also in some I managed to actually catch despite knowing almost nothing about his industry. And then separately from that, trailer for Sarkar 3 came out! And it is kind of fascinating to look at the two of them in terms of how Hindi film stars present themselves versus Malayalam.
Hindi Film 101 One-Off: Amitabh, from ABCL to Mohabbatein by way of KBC
Another one-off post! This week is just killing me between church and work and friends, so I don’t have the energy to start another big series. Plus, I never gave you a chance to vote! So instead, another Amitabh one-off, this time covering his most recent re-invention, from failed international businessman to TV star and back to movie star.
Random Songs Post: Let’s Play Antakshari!
I wanted to do a songs post, because this week is wearing me out and I don’t have the energy for a “real” post. And also because it was Mardi Gras yesterday and I have a great Mardi Gras song. But I couldn’t think of any other Mardi Gras songs, so instead of doing that theme, I came up with another.
Tuesday Tamil (on Wednesday): Achcham Yenbadhu Madamaiyada is Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa With a Twist
(Sorry, 6 church meetings in 3 days kind of killed my writing time, so this is going up a day late) Should I have watched the Telugu version instead? I went with this one because I know the director’s home language is Tamil, and of course it’s Rahman’s home language too and the songs were half the reason to watch it. But on the other hand, Nagarjuna’s son is very very cute.
Wednesday Watching Post: What are you Reading and Watching and Thinking About the 1st Day of March?
Happy March! Another month started, I am creeping ever closer to when I have to start looking for a new apartment (have I mentioned I’m moving when my lease is up? I love moving in, but I hate moving out, so it is a complicated time).
Global Box Office: Rangoon is an Also Ran, and I Meet a Kannada Movie Star!
Well, Rangoon is definitely the top pick for the weekend. But it was a terrible terrible weekend, so that is not saying much. The only big hit per screen was the one with inflated ticket prices (more on that later).
Hindi Film 101: The Chopras Part 3, Aditya Takes Charge, Gets Married, Has Baby
Upcoming Movies: Two Trailers and Rani!
Yay, Rani’s back!!!! I can’t decide if all these 90s actresses coming back is because the 90s really did have the best batch, or because the industry has finally started to accept women over 35 as more than just mothers. Probably a combo of the two.
