Happy Birthday Katrina! Here is Your Life

This isn’t a gift for Katrina in that she can read about her life, she knows her life. This is to make everyone who reads it a little more sensitive and respectful towards her. I know that was my experience writing it, I went from being neutral on Katrina to truly respecting her.

Discussion Post: What Big Projects Are You Working On to Make the Days Go By?

If you are like me, you are craving something to mark time, a big long running challenge that has multiple steps and will eventually be completed. Building a deck, painting your room, organizing your books, something like that. So I thought, let’s share/brag! Tell the DCIB community about your accomplishments, and maybe someone here will go “oh, that’s a great idea, I should do that too”.

Amitabh and Class Repost, My Article on Classism in India and Indian Film Reporting

The first thing you need to know about this post is that I wrote it back in May. As soon as India started being hit with COVID, I started thinking about class, and how that is going to affect everything, including the reporting on the crisis and the attitude towards who it is affecting. Now Amitabh is sick, and the India (reported) numbers are rising, and suddenly other people are also thinking about class and who matters and who doesn’t. Now, this is a Happy Place, so we aren’t going to get super deep into things here, but it’s a good time to think about how invisible classism effects the way we see the world, and what it takes to wake us up.

Amitabh Love Fest, Indefinite Positivity Good Vibes Parade

I’m not sure a totally agree on the power of good vibes and prayer and so on. But I certainly don’t DISBELIEVE it. So in a “can’t hurt and makes us feel better” kind of way, DCIB will become a Good Vibes Parade for a while in service of making Amitabh (and Abhishek) healthy. I know there are millions of other sick people in the world, but this is an Indian film site in the end, and Amitabh is the person we all share.

Monday Morning Questions: What Do You Want to Ask Me the Week of Katrina’s Birthday?

Happy Monday! I have been busy busy busy, the double birthday this weekend takes a lot out of me (although more out of my father, his wife turning 70 was very hard on him, the pressure for a Decade Birthday Worthy Celebration was enormous). And today I have to have more pre-surgical tests (keep a good thought for me that I pass and can have the surgery) plus do work-work.

Happy Birthday to My Sister! As a Gift To Her, This is a Space to Have Baby Parent Coffee Chat

It’s my sister’s birthday! And she will be spending it locked up in an apartment with her 11 month old baby, as she has spent every day for the past 4 months. I tried to think of what would be the most wonderful thing I could give someone in that situation, and I decided Moral Support and a Sense of Not Being Alone would be the best gift. But you have to help me “make” it! As a gift to me, give a gift to her 🙂

The Time Amitabh Came Back to Life, August 1st 1982

Amitabh is living a second life already, which he himself says. Every year he celebrates his second birthday on August 1st, the day he came back from certain death, somehow. We are coming up on the 28th anniversary of that date and Amitabh is once again hospitalized and in danger. A good time to look back at the miracle of his survival.

Hindi Film 101: Guru Dutt, Hindi Films Great Martyr to Art

I said if I was in the mood, I might finally write a Guru Dutt 101. Well, the rain kept me awake all night, it’s still overcast and drizzling now, but at the same time the light on the lake is so beautiful in the rain that the beauty is worth the melancholy. Perfect time to think about Guru Dutt.

I love local news! The wacky “human interest” stories are the ones that are the most fun to talk about and think about and just generally make the world a happier friendly warmer place.
