Another week, more of the same. Hindi big releases are record breakingly bad, small releases hold steady in weeks 4-5-6. And Telugu films look good by comparison but really aren’t. But the real interesting story is the little Punjabi film that is breaking records. (as always, figures from bollywoodhungama)
The box office figures are sooooooooooooooo bad right now, that it made me think about why exactly they are so bad, and if this is a good thing or bad thing. And I landed on “bad” and also “it’s the audience’s fault”. So get ready for me to get deep and complex towards the end!
And now we reach the era that the majority of us are actually aware of! Yaaaaay! Which is also why this is the shortest post, because I didn’t feel the need to give nearly as much background. Feel free to take off in the comments with your on details for these films, if you want.

You know what sells in the fast paced world of youtube? Sex! Sex and drugs! Which is to say, my hair video (the most wholesome version of sexy possible) and my initial box office video on super druggy Arjun Reddy are the two most popular. So I combined them and did another Arjun Reddy box office post this morning, while multitasking and brushing out my night time braid.
Well, this wasn’t a great weekend! Terrible in the US, okay in some other places thanks to random spikes. Arjun Reddy is still doing good, but it looks like it is doing better than it really is just in contrast to all the others.
I don’t care if no one else is interested in this, I AM!!!! Plus, it’s good for you few people who want a sense of where the industry came from and where it’s going. And it is basically the complete opposite of JHMS coverage, so that’s a nice little refreshing breather for us all. (1940-1955 in the last post)
I did it! I figured out how to add a title sequence with music to my youtube videos without breaking copyright laws!!! It’s a MIRACLE!!!! Only, I can only do it using the youtube editor tool that will only be around until September 20. Oh well.
Well this is an exciting box office week! Not in Hindi film, Toilet and Jab Harry Met Sejal are declining, A Gentleman is flopping (even though it is SO GOOD! People are stupid), Bareilly Ki Barfi is holding steady in it’s small way. No no, it’s the southern market that is FINALLY healthy again. Well, Telugu. Tamil is still on life support.
Well this is an interesting week! And, hopefully, a sign of things to come. The big big films continued to underperform, but a small sweet film did much better than it should have. Have I mentioned that technology hates me? Or at least, doesn’t like me much? Following your notes on my last post, I tried a fast-talking excited video. And then after 3 days of trying, have totally failed to figure out how to add graphics (the other big suggestion). So put a pin in the graphics requests (unless you have a suggestion for a free program I can download to do them), and just focus on the talking head part of it.
Okay, are we all ready to set aside our expectations and our prejudices and look at raw figures? Are we excited? Do we have our calculators out and our common sense hats on? Are we ready to try to figure out a pun based on the title of this movie, because I couldn’t and I need help? (The best I could come up with was “Jab Harry Met Slow Business”, which isn’t great).
Yeah, nothing is ever going to be as pun friendly as Tubelight. Even Toilet, when it comes, will be just too obvious, no scope for invention. And this week I have to make do with alliteration. Does that headline work? I debated it for quite a bit. I think it does. Anyway, Munna Michael isn’t even really the big news this week, because we all kind of knew it would flop, that’s not exactly “news”. No, the news is over in the Punjabi world! And a little bit Tamil and Telugu.

First, just getting it out of the way, I did NOT see Jagga Jasoos last night. Instead I went to see an actual good movie, Thondimuthlum Driksakshiyum (podcast going up soon, review up for Monday Malayalam). But I will be seeing it first possible show today! And taking my laptop so I can write the review for you guys from the food court at the mall and have it up ASAP.
I’m gonna try to be good and get back on the Box Office report wagon. Because it really doesn’t mean anything unless you do it every week so you have context. Even if there isn’t that much of a story this week.

Happy day before Tubelight! I think I have picked my optimal showtime. Later show, but closer theater, so I can still be home at a reasonable hour. Same theater where I saw Bahubali opening night, Sultan for the second time, and Fan opening night. You will notice from that list that this theater only plays the biggest releases. Which allows me to make some box office predictions! Oh, and I also needed to do a post because Salman just released a video of Epic Cuteness.
I was going to do a box office report for Raabta earlier this week, and it turned into this very very long post about what box office is and why I look at it the way I do and so on and so forth. And I thought “heck, I should just turn this into a 101 one-off so people can easily refer back to it later!” (don’t worry, I will come back to my Nehru-Gandhi family history and finish it in a bit)
I accurately predicted, 5 days ago, that Bahubali 2 would be #3 at the US box office at the end of the weekend. So this is one of those HA HA HA HA HA I WAS RIGHT I AM QUEEN OF EVERYTHING posts. My favorite kind! Well, no, my favorite kind is HA HA HA HA SRK WAS RIGHT HE IS KING OF EVERYTHING. Because I am a sick sick obsessed person. But this one is pretty good too!
Do you like the title? I’m pretty proud of it. Anyhoo, what it means is that Badrinath was very very very good in overseas figures. Very VERY good.
