Happy Wednesday! I did my church movie discussion group last night, and I have my other movie discussion group tomorrow night, I’m excited! Get to watch Passing and a Hitchcock this week.

FilmFare Awards: I Resent Writing This Post Because This Award is Just a Popularity Contest and Doesn’t Matter, But Fine, Here You Go
Akshat in a comment just reminded me to talk about FilmFare awards, and said there is some kind of controversy this year, which blech. Get ready for Margaret to be very bitter and angry about people who get upset about stuff that doesn’t matter. But only after first laying out why it doesn’t matter and my own lukewarm opinions.
Continue readingMatch Up the Oscar Types with Indian Film! Who is the “It Girl”? Or the “Old Woman We Forgot Was Still Alive”? Or “the one who was nominated once and is really great on the red carpet so we keep inviting them”?
You know the Oscars aren’t really about objective quality, right? There’s all kinds of things that go into it, that end up with the exact same kind of people and things on the list every single year. As a mental challenge, I am going to break down the categories I see and then we can see if you can find them in Indian film. And to make this hard but not impossible, I’m gonna limit it to 2018-2019.
Continue reading2019 Award Post: What is Your Song of the Year?
This is a nice fun subjective post. This isn’t everyone’s song of the year, just YOUR song of the year. And then based on the responses, we can try to come up with a DCIB community majority Song of the Year.
Continue reading2019 Awards Post: Best Fictional Couple of 2019 Poll Post!
Surprisingly hard decision time! For a year with limited romance releases, there were a shockingly large number of good couples onscreen, from old stalwarts Kat-Salman and Juhi-Anil to newcomers Alia-Ranveer and Tiger-Hrithik.
Continue readingSunday ReRun: Gully Boy, the First Great Movie of 2019
Woo, Gully Boy! Released in February, just when I was thinking 2019 would have no good movies at all. And then it showed me that it would have at least one.
Continue readingWomen Directors Week Sequel Post: Sequels for Zoya and Reema, Gauri, and Tanuja; Luck By Chance, Talaash, Dil Dhadakne Do, Gully Boy, English/Vinglish, Dear Zindagi, Qarib Qarib Singlle
I’m still fighting off a case of the Mondays, and nothing cheers me up like fanfic! And this is fun fanfic, the ones where I don’t have to come up with characters and stuff, I can just piggyback on characters we already know and love.
Continue readingHappy Day After May Day! The Best “Kill the Rich” Songs in Indian Film
And the May Day celebration roles on! I just keep thinking of more “woo-hoo, the working class!” songs.
Continue readingDiscussion Post (Because No One is Commenting and I Have Writer’s Block): What Do You Think is the Best All Time Indian Film Soundtrack Album?
I was all set for people to get angry with me for my Hindi Film 101 on class and Kangana, and nothing. And not really any comments on my Super Deluxe review either (if someone wants to link back to it from the Bardwaj review page as an example of a review that is critical of the film, that would be great). Anyway, when the comments drop down, so does my ability to think abstractly and intelligently and I end up putting up stupid posts like this in an attempt to get a response from the void.
Continue readingBox Office Report: Badla Does Blockbuster!
I took a little box office vacation the past several weeks, but obviously I had to come back to see how SRK’s new movie did!!!! (data from bollywoodhungama here) This is a pretty light post, because I am planning and writing a more in depth discussion of SRK and Red Chillies to go up separately.
Continue readingRandom FanFic: Better Romance Endings! 96, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Fidaa, Qarib Qarib Singlle, and Bonus Gully Boy Extra Romance
I need to write something I can stay focused on while being interrupted by phone calls every 5 minutes at work, and fanfic is where it is at. I get so sucked in so fast to my own stories that I can jump in and out a lot more easily than some stupid analytical post. Hopefully these are fun for at least some of you, since they are all just additions to movies we know. Oh, and obviously there are spoilers for the films’ real endings buried in my rewrites. Also, this is a very very long post, but you can always just read the ones where you know the original film already.
Continue readingGully Boy Review (SPOILERS): The Poor Don’t Drag Each Other Down, They Lift Each Other Up
This is a movie that is about the music and the moments (Zoya is such a beautiful director) more than the plot. So it isn’t that bad to SPOIL yourself. But if you want to go into it keeping some of the tension of not knowing what will happen, you can skip this review and read the other one instead.
Continue readingGully Boy: Deewar Gets a New Beat
What a good movie! Not original, but also original, and perfectly executed. Reema and Zoya continue to be the Queens of the industry, and Alia is the Empress. Ranveer is okay too.
Continue readingMonday Morning Questions: What Do You Want to Ask Me Gully Boy Week?
Happy Monday! I have such a fun busy week, supposed to see ELKDTAL with friends tonight or tomorrow, then on Weds. a friend I haven’t seen in a long time is coming over, Thurs. is my annual Valentine’s Party, and Friday is Gully Boy (yaaaay!).
Continue readingGully Boy Soundtrack Song By Song, Artists and Background Explained
Emily posted a link to a really interesting article about how the Gully Boy soundtrack was put together by multiple musicians with every song different (article here). That got me to listen to the soundtrack and go “wow, every song IS different!” And that got me to want to write this post, where I go into the musicians behind each song.
Continue readingWednesday Watching Post: What Are You Watching and Reading and Thinking and Listening To This Week?
Happy Wednesday! I hope you are as cozy and warm as I am this week. The horrible cold is over and now we are back to normal cold and thick blankets and hot baths and it is just a super nice end to the winter.
Continue readingWednesday Watching Post: What Are You Reading and Watching and Thinking and Listening to This Week?
Happy Wednesday! This is the place to talk about how we are spending this very very snowy week. Or at least, snowy where I am.
Continue readingGully Boy Versus Gully Boy: Which Version Do You Like Better?
Well, Ranveer’s version came out today. Version plus video. And I’m just gonna put it out there, I like the original better.
Continue readingGully Boy Trailer!!!! Do They Think We Haven’t Seen 8 Mile?
Well, shoot. This was extremely derivative. I will give Zoya a lot of rope, but really? The quality of the colors, the gritty character background, even the hoodie. Surely there was a more original way to handle the story of a rising rap star.
Continue readingUpcoming Movies: The Next Film of Amitabh, Rajinikanth, Ranveer, and Dhanush
Lots of first looks! Which are always kind of “how is this news?” but sometimes slightly interesting. These were slightly interesting ones.
