Well, I’ve hurt Shahrukh by not doing a full real Shahrukh Month celebration, and now he is posting posters right after I get off twitter and go to work. I’m sorry Shahrukh!!!! I still love you! Anyway, I will try to make up for it by giving this poster it’s very own post.
Our last Shahrukh Month Review! So SAD!!!! There is still Jab Harry Met Sejal Day to look forward to on Sunday, but that won’t be a “new” movie to the blog. Oh well, there’s always the much less important holiday seasons of Diwali and Christmas to look forward to once Shahrukh Month is over.
I just had my usual agonizing ten minutes of deep moral complexity when deciding what milk to buy, and I thought I would walk you all through it so you know that I’m not just insane about overthinking movies, it’s my whole life.
Question from Procrastinatrix! Which I really liked so I am using. We have talked a lot about the movies or TV series we want from him as an actor, but what would we like to see him do beyond that?
This is a question someone asked me ages back and it has stuck with me. So I am stealing it to see if anyone can come up with a better answer than me!
I already did two posts on the criticisms I agree with (here and here). This is Shahrukh month, so we aren’t going to deal with those. Instead we are going to vent about the criticisms that tend to come up which are most unjustified, in this safe fan only space where we can all agree (or mostly agree) with each other.
I know India has a somewhat thriving horror business now, and horror films are definitely not my genre (I have seen three), but it’s Halloween week, so it seemed appropriate.
We were talking in the Jab Tak Hai Jaan review about how “Ishq Shava” was such a different style of dance for Shahrukh and that got me thinking about the other songs that really showcase his dancing. If I miss one, feel free to add it in the comments. Oh, and this is NOT “Best Songs”. There’s all kind of amazing song sequences with perfect performances from him that are not included here, because they didn’t highlight dancing.
Today is Intersex Awareness Day! Who knew? Which is sort of related to this post, in that it is a reminder that gender is a construct, not a biological fact. And therefore Shahrukh Khan, a man, can also have feminine aspects. And those aspects can be a blessing and a wonderful thing to be celebrated.
I am probably going to be busy at work again today, and I will definitely be sleepy because I woke up at 5am for no reason, so I am going to put up a post that will give me something interesting to read (I hope) while I try to stay awake and field phone calls. (don’t worry, there is also a Shahrukh themed TGIF going up later)
Happy Wednesday Shahrukh Review day! Aw, only one left after this. That’s sad. But, it has given me a chance to crank through some of his films that I hadn’t gotten around to addressing before.
You know how it is wrong to objectify people and think of them as only their outer surface and blah blah? Put a pin in that for a second and try to forget it, we are going to vote on who has the best body between Shahrukh and Prabhas! Top to bottom, piece by piece.
This came up in a conversation with Niki in the comments a week or so ago, the difficulty of when a fantasy is too real, too close to reality, not the hero part of it that I already discussed, but the situations, the life that the heroine is leading. And it made me think, is that why Indian films are so consciously unrealistic in certain ways?
First, I did not miss yesterday even if you think I did!!!! I wrote a brilliant beautiful wonderful fanfic that more people should read. Shahrukh and Irrfan fall in love, it’s delightful. And now I am back to a nice little discussion post.
Well, MKY pointed out at in the comments on my Friday post that Shahrukh would never play a same-sex romance, or the father of a marriage age daughter, or a polyamorous man in 3 relationships. To which I said “well, that’s what fanfic is for!” So if Shahrukh isn’t going to give us these films in real life, I feel I have an obligation to give them to us in fanfic form.
And Saturday keeps rolling along! Flowers are in the window, groceries are put away, and before I start thinking about dinner, I need to get a Shahrukh discussion post up!
I’m in that perfect mood of tired but wanting a distraction that leads to very short fanfic ideas. So, for today’s TGIF, let us look at photos of Shahrukh in real life and pretend they are characters he is playing.
Did you think I didn’t notice Prithviraj’s birthday? I did! But I was too tired and overworked to do anything about it. However, better late than never, and today is a good day for me to start a discussion in the comments since I won’t have time for a big long post until tonight.
There are a large number of films where he actually is playing his own age, or close to it. But for those few where he is clearly far far distant from the character age, here are my suggestions for how to fix it. It’s not hard, I don’t know why they didn’t just right it this way to begin with!
Such an interesting movie! A light tone and a dark story. In keeping with it’s predecessor, The Apartment. Oh, and don’t worry too much about SPOILERS on this one if you haven’t seen it before, everything is more or less predictable.
A question for the ages! Shahrukh versus other actors is easy, but what about Shahrukh versus himself?
This isn’t “best” songs, these are the ones that if you had to show somebody an example of what Shahrukh’s persona/personality is boiled all the way down to the basics, these are the ones you would pick.
This seems like a fun question that hopefully people will have many opinions on. It’s Saturday, there should be loads of time to talk with the internet.
I’m not talking about, like, hair clippings. I have never had any luck finding stuff like that. But there is plenty of other mass produced weirdness out there.
Well, I got no sleep, and it is overcast today, and I am very much looking forward to finishing work, going home, leaving again, going to a movie, and then falling into bed for about 20 hours.
