It only took a month, but I have now finished “Mehndi Laga Ka Rakna”! There’s really a lot in that song, much more than in the other ones. It’s also, I think, only fully “real” song, even “Ruk Ja” feels like it has some fantasy in there, and certainly all the other songs are a mix of real and not-real. (full index of DDLJ coverage here)

DDLJ Scene By Scene Part 42: Dance Break!
“Mendhi Laga Ka Rakna” continues!!!! But I think I will be finishing it next week. So sad. Then it’s all drama and angst and Anupam Kher straight through to the end. (full index of DDLJ coverage here)
DDLJ Scene By Scene Part 41: Mehndi Laga ka Rakhna Continued! Kuljit Gets a High Five
I forgot how much the outsiders in the love triangle have to do in this song! There’s Mandira Bedi all over the place, but this bit has Kuljit too, and he will show up again later. (full index of DDLJ coverage here)
DDLJ Part 40: Mehndi Lagake Rakhna, Continued
Yes, this song will last us well into the new year. There’s just so much to look at in it! And it is so pretty and romantic and fun and everything else! (full index of DDLJ coverage here)
DDLJ Scene By Scene Part 39: Mehndi Lagake Rakna Continues!
What, you thought it would be over in one entry? Nope, this things gonna continue for another 2 parts at least! Anyway, it’s a really important song! And I think the last song of the film? Am I forgetting something? If I’m not forgetting something, that is even more reason to appreciate it, that this is the last glorious burst of song before the rest of the movie plays out. (full scene by scene index of DDLJ here)
DDLJ Scene By Scene Part 38: Mehndi Lagake Rakne, the Opening
What a great song! A big song number with the whole cast involved, but it doesn’t feel contrived, it feels like a party at a Punjabi farmhouse, only slightly exaggerated. (full index of DDLJ coverage here)
100 Years of Hindi Film History in 10 Movies
I put up a version of this post a couple of days ago, but then we all spitballed back and forth in the comments and ended up coming up with a few changes. So this is the New Improved Better version of the post (original version, you can still view here). This is to help sort of orient you to Indian film history. A big accepted “classic” from each decade that will help you understand how the industry grew and changed. I don’t promise that you will be able to find and watch each of them (the website indiancine.ma is a fantastic resource you might want to try), but you should at least be familiar with the titles of these films and what they meant.
DDLJ Part 37: Kajol Puts a BandAid on a Broken Heart
Part 37! I skipped last week because of the holiday, well, the 3 holidays (my blogaversary, Niki’s birthday, and Thanksgiving). But now I am back. And it’s a super cute bit. (full index of DDLJ coverage here)
Friday Classics: Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, the Deconstruction of Shahrukh Khan
Get ready for me to be lazy! I just dug up a paper I wrote for grad school on this film/Shahrukh’s star persona and wildly slashed out bits and rearranged and then threw it up. But whatever, I haven’t done a Rab Ne post yet really, and it was time. The post I really wanted to write was on Lucky: No Time for Love, but I’m not going to let myself, because that should wait for Salman’s Birthday Celebration time.
DDLJ Scene By Scene Part 36: Shahrukh is Cocky!
Welcome back to DDLJ! Our lovers are still separated, but we do get some really cute Shahrukh faces in this bit. And I am sticking with my theory that these paired sequences represent the male and female reaction to “love triumphant”. Kajol was shy and eager to share her happiness with another woman and be a bit dreamy, but also a bit afraid to trust it. Shahrukh is so proud of himself he is about to burst his buttons. (full index of DDLJ coverage here)
DDLJ Scene By Scene Part 35: Sisters Share Joy
Not nearly as fun as the last part, because SRKajol aren’t together. But we do get to see their happiness after being together, which is nice! (full index of DDLJ here)
DDLJ Scene By Scene Part 34: A Kiss!
Terrace scene, part two! What better way to celebrate SRK’s birthday than with a DDLJ post. And this bit is just too good, I went a little bit crazy with the screenshots (full index of DDLJ coverage here)
DDLJ Scene By Scene Part 33: Chess And Lovers Quarrel
A little bit of Amrish Puri, and the our first terrace scene! Yay! (full index of DDLJ coverage here)
DDLJ Scene By Scene Part 32: A Kiss is Missed
Another fun part! Really, all the fun parts are when Shahrukh and Kajol are actually interacting. Partly because their chemistry is great, partly because it feels like the plot is moving somewhere when they are in the same frame (full index of DDLJ coverage here)
DDLJ Part 31: A Song and Dance of Women
Welcome back! A fun bit this time, the first time SRKajol are in the same frame in ages. (full index of DDLJ coverage here)
Silly Sunday Post: Happy 25 Days to SRK’s B-Day! 25 SRK Plots Filled in, Part 2
I did 13 this morning, now another 12 for this afternoon. This is such a fun way to spend a Sunday! (part 1 here)
Happy Karwa Chauth!!!
How am I not able to think of more Karva Chauth songs than this?!?!? It really feels like there must be more! If you remember what I am forgetting, put it in the comments. Oh, and just like Dussehra, temporary header image change! Enjoy! (this is an updated and reposted post from last year)
DDLJ Scene By Scene Part 30: Shahrukh as the Man in the Window
Happy Wednesday! It is Shahrukh month, and I am still doing the DDLJ posts in addition to the 31 days o’ SRK posts. Mostly because there are a lot of people who read the DDLJ posts for the pure boring analysis, not the SRK love, so it’s kind of counter-programming. (full index of DDLJ coverage here)
Happy Shahrukh Birthday Month, Day 1 (of 31)! 31 Gifs for Us All
I sense a disturbance in the world of my blog. On one side, I have many many voices crying out in joy at the thought of 31 full days of SRK posts. And then on the other side, I have not quite as many voices crying out in despair. So, here’s the deal. I will continue my Monday and Tuesday reviews. And my Friday Classics. And I’ll throw in news posts and so on. It won’t be all SRK all the time. But all TGIF and Sunday fanfic content will be replaced by SRK focused items. I mean, most of the people who read those are SRKians anyway, right? And every day there will be a special SRK birthday post counting down 31 to 1. Some of them very very silly (as this one will be), and some of them serious (for instance, best performances). If you don’t absolutely hate SRK, at least read the headline topic for the post before deciding not to read it, there will be good content in here.
DDLJ Scene By Scene Part 29: The Man in the Kitchen
Welcome back to DDLJ watch! And this is a very very big scene. Not in terms of plot, but in terms of changing how we see our hero. (full index of DDLJ coverage here)
Happy Birthday Lata Mangeshkar!!! Part 3, Reasons 60-88 That I Love You
DDLJ Scene By Scene Part 28: Shahrukh Plays the Woman
Part 28! Missed it until now because I ran out of time to pull screengrabs. But now I am back! And I am ready to give my massive theory of the second half of the film. What fun! (full index of DDLJ coverage here)
Hindi Film 101: Top Box Office Hits 1986-2000
And now we reach the era that the majority of us are actually aware of! Yaaaaay! Which is also why this is the shortest post, because I didn’t feel the need to give nearly as much background. Feel free to take off in the comments with your on details for these films, if you want.
DDLJ Scene By Scene Part 27: More Party! And Phurr
Boy, this party just lasts FOREVER, doesn’t it? Oh well, it is a Punjabi wedding party, I guess that is realistic. At least the scene right after is kind of interesting. Maybe the reason I have been putting off getting back to DDLJ is because this is kind of a dull section. Likes get to Karwa Chauth when things get interesting again! (full index of DDLJ posts here)
