2 new videos! One which revealed a lot, and one which revealed NOTHING. But both got me excited.

New Trailers! Dishoom, Te3n, and Sultan
Well, Dishoom is the one that came out today, but so long as we are talking about that, might as well talk about Te3n and Sultan too.
FanVid Post! From Gerua to Superwoman!
It’s been a while, but I hit a rich string of fanvids last night, so I thought I should share the best ones with you all. And put them all in one place in case I want to find them again.
Happy Friday the 13th!!! Why do Indian Horror Movies Have Such Great Songs?
Happy Friday the 13th! I was just reminded of Indian horror movies by moviemavengal’s post on Pizza. I haven’t seen Pizza (too scary!), but I did catch the trailer on one of my Tamil DVDs, and it was so striking that as soon as I saw the title on moviemavengal’s post, I instantly remembered it.
New Videos For Upcoming Movies! 3 From Bombay, and 1 From LA!
Most of these were released a couple of days ago, I just haven’t gotten around to watching them yet. Because I’m not terribly excited about any of them. So I am going to squeeze them all into one post.
Happy Mother’s Day! Some Songs to Help You Celebrate!
Happy Mother’s Day! An Indian filmi holiday if there ever was one! Except not, because why have a special holiday if everyday is Mother’s Day? I’ll be putting up a few more posts on the same theme today, but to start off, have some songs!
Happy Teachers Day!!!!
Happy Teachers Day! (At least, in America) So many sexy teacher songs in Indian film! Every film director in the world must have had a massive crush on a teacher at some point. Good news is, it looks like Teachers Day may be different in India than America, so I will get to put up a whole bunch of other videos in a few months!
Happy May Day! Or, International Workers Day!
Happy May Day/Labor Day! For an industry that is also dismissed as being frivolous and full of fantasy, Indian film really has a lot of songs about work!
Happy International Dance Day! It May Be a Made Up Holiday, But I’m Still Celebrating!
Thanks to Amitabh’s twitter, I just learned that 4/29/2016 is International Dance Day. I had a half moment of thinking someone was punking him, but a bit of googling confirmed that it is actually a thing! Created by the International Dance Council, a UNESCO partner group. Which means it is enough of a thing that I can celebrate by posting the best, or at least my favorite, dances! Well, some of them. Good news is, this is apparently an annual thing, so I can come up with a whole different list next year! Continue reading
Happy Earth Day!!!! Have Some Earth-Based Songs to Celebrate!!!
I was trying to think what to put up for this, because there aren’t really any super hippy-dippy environmentalist songs in Indian films. But then I remembered, it’s not the hippy-dippy environmentalists who are leading the charge, it’s the struggling farmers who have a deep and real understanding of what Global Warming is causing. And there are loads of struggling villagers/farmers songs!
Happy 420! Here are my Favorite Bhang songs!
I think this might be just an American thing, but 4/20 is traditionally a day to celebrate Marijuana. There are a whole bunch of different versions of where it came from, but just accept that “420” in general is slang for marijuana, and therefore the date 4/20 has become a marijuana holiday. Which means, I get to do a post of my favorite songs in which people are high!
FanVid Post! Because There Were No New Movies and I Stayed Home and Browsed YouTube Instead!
Fanvids! My favorite kind of vid! And there are so many good ones that I haven’t seen before! Or at least, haven’t posted the link to before.
In Honor of Calcutta: My Favorite Calcutta Songs
Horrible news out of Calcutta today. I can’t really do anything to make it better, but at least I can put up a post in honor of the city today.
Various Authorized non-FanVid Song Videos: Kapoor and Sons, Ki and Ka, and Dilwale
Karan just released yet another Kapoor and Sons song video on his twitter this morning, and there have been a whole bunch of other song video releases I didn’t even notice (because Karan didn’t tweet them), but I should really talk about. Because it’s almost Cricket season, authorized song videos are going to be all we have to entertain us for a while.
FanVids! For Fandoms I didn’t even realize existed!
So, yesterday I was digging around looking for new Dilwale fanvids. And I ran across all of these awesome videos for fandoms I didn’t even know existed! Or that I knew existed, but I thought were too classy for fanvids (Aamir fans, I am looking at you!)
Dilwale is Now Available Streaming! Which means…..Fanvids!
I saw a thing about Dilwale being available so soon on streaming, because Shahrukh wanted to make it available for the international audience who didn’t get it in their countries ASAP, even faster than DVDs could get there. And by what I can see on youtube, he definitely has an international audience, and they definitely started streaming the movie IMMEDIATELY. And then illegally ripped the files and started making their own fanvids.
DDLJ Part 2: Mere Kwabon Mein Jo Aaye!!!! (Oh, and also Spoilers, but you should just pull it up on Netflix and watch it if you haven’t seen it by now)
So, part one got a little deep and a little poetic about the meaning of the diaspora and male versus female life spaces and so on. I will try very hard to keep it light with this one, but I don’t know if I can! I think this is the first movie I’ve recapped here (except maybe Airlift?) that I think is legitimately deep, not just fun to watch.
So, onward! To the one who comes in my dreams!
(part 1 here, part 2 here, part 3 here, part 4 here, part 5 here, part 6 here, part 7 here, part 8 here, part 9 here, part 10 here, part 11 here, part 12 here, part 13 here, part 14 here, part 15 here, part 16 here)
Shahrukh Versus Aamir: Aamir says he is just like you; Shahrukh says you are just like him
I already posted the awesome awesome videos that Shahrukh and YRF released today highlighting the SRK fan community. Reverse fanvids, if you will. But I have so many more thoughts on what they mean than I was able to put in that post!
For instance, doesn’t this remind you of Aamir Khan promoting 3 Idiots?
Shahrukh just did something awesome!
Well, really Shahrukh and YRF. They just posted (like, a few hours ago, just in time for my morning twitter check!) 5 amazing videos that were, I guess, reverse fanvids? Videos that Shahrukh and YRF made about fans, instead of the videos I highlighted yesterday, that were made by fans for Shahrukh and YRF. I have many many thoughts! But first, I want to get a post up just so you can all see the videos.
Fan Vid Time! Adele, Elvis, Britney, and Shahrukh!
So, I was in the mood for some good new SRK fanvids last night. Who knows why! Maybe it was something I ate, maybe it was that I just re-watched Asoka, maybe it was because I was spending too long staring at the incredibly sexy Dabboo Ratnani photos…. (It’s the photos).
Anyway, here are some of the best ones I found!
Merry Christmas!!!
I already posted some Holiday fanvids in my post-Thanksgiving post, but there are more!
(I know it is really a Mithun song, but it just feels right done by SRKelf)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ToYa85OAVI
(It’s from 2013, but I am sure they still wish us this year!)
(all I ever wanted was Christmas wishes from Salman Khan and an underwear company!)
(somehow both sexy and festive!)
And how did I not find this channel until today?!?!? I have wasted my December!!! I could have watched the video below 24 days ago!
Updated SRKajol fanvids (Dilwale Spoilers!!!)
So, now that there is new SRKajol footage out there, in the world, the natural result is new SRKajol fanvids.
If you have already seen Dilwale, and are prevented by stupid things like work and family and holidays from seeing it again, these might serve to take the edge off a little. I like this one as a summary of the whole first half love story. No idea what the song is saying, but it sounds pretty!
The 4 Kinds of Fanvids
So, I am a huge huge sucker for a good fanvid, have been for years. Going all the way back to when I was in college and I would take a break from studying to browse around and try to dig up a new SRKajol vid.
After over a decade of loving these things, I think I have figured out 3 categories of fanvids, specific to Indian fandom.
First, there is fanvid that expands on the themes of an existing artwork, for instance this fabulous one from Alina Yuvvraaj:
Or these, from lalilly:
Then there are the fanvids that expand on the particular awesomeness of a particular star. Like this, my all time favorite from Zizi K:
Or this one from Alina Yuvvraaj again:
So, both of those kinds of videos, based on a particular movie or a particular star, you can find in any fandom. Where I think it starts to get unique, is in the next two categories.
First, there are the videos based on a particular mood. Since Indian film follows the Rasa theory, where the goal is to evoke a particular mood at a particular moment, rather than a cohesive mood through out one narrative, a wide variety of films might have particular scenes that flow seamlessly between the borders of their individual movies.
Like this, the moment when you are in love without realizing it yet and happy (from half a dozen different movies with the same moment). By Zizi K again:
Or this, which evokes the specific mood of “young and drunk at a club”, by MRSEMRAAN:
Or this, which has the very specific-to-Indian-film emotion described right there in the title. Women who are sad, and the men who love them from MRSEMRAAN again:
And then finally, there is my favorite category, the totally made up full narratives that go across multiple films and, occasionally, all the way into real life footage. This is really unique to Indian film, because Indian film is uniquely cohesive film to film. The same jodis play the same characters going through the same narrative beats over the over again. And even into real life, in interviews and publicity tours, they interact the same way. And who knows, maybe it is even related to the reincarnation in Hinduism! According to some versions, even Ram and Sita were reborn multiple times and lived out their story over and over.
Anyway, one of my favorites, which seamlessly moves between real life and film. Almost convinces me that Kajol really is eating her heart out, from MissCinemaObsessive:
and then I watch this from lalilly and feel better:
(see, they’re just friends after all!)
Or this one, where she actually does get him, even though he is himself and she is village-Kajol, from Zizi K:
Or this, where it’s not just SRKajol, but SRKajol vs Kajol/Salman and Kajol/Saif, from LUANSU (LUANSU was also the first fanvid maker I found, back in college):
It’s not just SRKajol, I literally screamed with delight when I found this one, hitting up the scandals old school! And using all film footage to tell a real life story, very impressive! From TheMelicrazyy:
And this leads into the bonus subcategory, fake storylines pulling together multiple films, but with stars who never actually acted together! Because actors and their characters are so consistent across films, and all films are so consistant with the kind of scenes they include, you can actually craft a narrative revolving around people who have never been onscreen together (my favorite of these is the Abhishek/Kajol/Rani “Teardrops on My Guitar” that was briefly posted like 6 years ago by Nouf89, and then pulled down. My white whale! If someone out there has it, please send me a copy!). But these are nice too. From rmskch:
(this is so impressive! Remember they have only been onscreen together for less than ten seconds in her friendly appearance in KANK)
And I had never even considered these options, from 3bit89:
(none of these three has ever costarred with each other in anything!)
So, did I do this right? Are there the same number of categories as promised in the post-title? I think so:
- Fanvids expanding on one particular film
- Fanvids expanding on one particular star
- Fanvids combining multiple films with the same mood
- Fanvids combining multiple films with the same moods/stars into a narrative
- Fanvids combining multiple films with the same moods/stars into a narrative even if the stars never acted opposite each other
Fun videos
First, something funny and professional:
And then something fan made and romantic (I think I may actually like it more than the “real” Gerua video):
