I just have so much to say about internet dialogue! And the Gunjan Saxena debate that I am listening to second hand thanks to y’all has given me a new thing to think about. Also, once again, NO POLITICS. We have been doing fabulously with productive conversations about communication and internet culture without political specifics, let’s keep that up!
Continue readingHomeschool Discussion Area: I Was Homeschooled, Some Of You Are Now Homeschooling, Let’s Talk and Trade Resources
I have spent the past 25 years being special and weird and strange because I was homeschooled, and now every kid in the world is gonna be the same as me! Not fair! I kind of liked being special and weird! UPDATE: I’m gonna go ahead and stick this to the top of the blog until after Labor Day, so you can all vent/discuss the rocky start to your school years. We have at least two teachers here, and 4 parents, and multiple students from high school up. Share your experiences and resources and complain about your stresses!
Continue readingWednesday Watching Post: What Are You Reading and Watching and Thinking and Listening To This Week?
Happy Wednesday! Today I go to the doctor again, and I am trying not to get my hopes up, but I still really really hate the surgical boot. Fingers crossed there is some small change!
Continue readingFriday WatchAlong: Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Kabhi Kabhi, or Main Khiladi Tu Anari
Quite the grab bag of options I have come up with this week! I’m not wedded to any of them, feel free to make suggestions. This is a movie for Deepti Naval’s birthday, a movie for Raakhee, and a movie for Saif.
Continue readingHappy Birthday Gulzar! Hindi Films’ Evergreen Poet, Here Are Some of My Favorite Songs of Yours
Gulzar! He has been a lyricist since, like, forever. Plus writes scripts, plus sometimes directs. I cannot possibly list out everything awesome he has done, so instead I’m just gonna list the awesome songs from him that I most like.
Continue readingHappy Birthday Daler Mehndi! Your Best Movie (I Think), Mirzya
WARNING! This is a freakishly long review!!!! It’s a combination of the no spoiler and spoiler reviews I originally posted, and also I got very excited about the spoiler review and it was already super long even before I combined the two. So if you loved loved loved this movie, enjoy! And if you just love over-analysis, enjoy! And if neither of those things are true, skip! Oh, and also, you should really really watch this movie. It’s beautiful and over the top and melodramatic and everything good.
Continue readingHappy Birthday Daler Mehndi! Such a Distinctive Sound You Have
Daler Mehndi! He has a very specific sound to him, which can be extremely powerful when used in a limited fashion. Probably why he never quite broke through in Hindi film, he’s really only good for one song per soundtrack.
Continue readingThinky Post: “Cancel Culture” versus “Boycott Culture”, US versus India
First, NO POLITICS!!!! Which is going to be hard, because basically all social media campaigns in India are supported by paid political agents. That’s not me being paranoid, that is a fact, and it is why no intelligent person should treat social media opinions on Indian issues seriously. Make up your own mind without regard to what social media is saying. But I am going to frame this discussion in a more general way, which allows for a bigger debate beyond politics. Mostly. (oh, and thank you Courtney for the idea!)
Continue readingHappy Birthday Shankar! I Don’t Much Like You as a Director, But I Can’t Resist Your Songs!
Shankar! Totally bonkers visuals, very reductive view of relationships. Makes for movies that don’t really work for me as a whole, but very fun little mini movie song sequences. Especially since he usually partners with AR Rahman.
Continue readingMonday Morning Questions: What Do You Want to Ask Me the Day I Was Published on ArmchairJournal.com?
Happy Monday! One of the lovely commentators here linked me up with a website where she is doing an internship, and they gave me a chance to write an article. And in return, of course I promised to promote the article/them on my own sites (so, here, since I do nothing else on The Internet). Here you go, https://armchairjournal.com/could-covid-save-the-single-screen-theater/
Continue readingHappy Birthday Saif! Your Other Light Happy Mature Movie That I Didn’t Appreciate Enough at the Time, Chef!
I reread my review, and I think I might have been a little too hard on the film. Yes, it was an almost line by line remake, yes some things didn’t really work, but it was harmless, and it had a mature hero trying to figure out how to be a father, and just generally some good stuff we don’t usually see in Hindi film.
Continue readingHappy Birthday Saif! Your Most Recent Happy Light Mature Witty Film, Jiwani Jaanemann!
Not saying this is a perfect movie, some bits are a bit rushed, and there isn’t enough Farida, or enough depth to it. But it’s on the whole a very pleasant happy movie with a nice modern message about growing up and family and good things. The kind of movie I wish we could see more of, and that I am very glad Saif is making.
Continue readingSilly Sunday: My Recent Binge Watches Remade, Wings and Midsomer Murders and Miranda
Most of you have seen some to none of these, don’t care! For my own happiness, I am going to play with how they could be turned into Indian movies/TV shows. And I guess you should all watch them? If you like pleasant lowkey shows that leave you smiling and ready for bed, these are very good options.
Continue readingQuiz Time! Which Shahrukh Heroine Are You?
You ready for how rumpled I am today? I have retreated to online quizzes! I never do online quizzes. Like really, never. But something about watching a happy sitcom and methodically answering questions about myself is really nice.
Continue readingBaby Questions! 3 Important Cross-Cultural Discussion Topics, Starting With “Does Your Baby’s Nose Go Boop?”
Well, I had a nap, and am feeling a bit less rumpled, but still kind of rumpled. So no rumply discussion (for instance, you should all read Shahrukh’s new tweet and appreciate the subtle statement he is making about patriotism, but we won’t be discussing it here). But I did come up with something real we can talk about! Babies!
Continue readingRecast My 3 Favorite Raakhee Movies With Me! Married Love Story With Shy Scientist, Double Role Good/Bad Twin, Older Woman Seductress
Have I already fanficed/recast these movies? Eh, don’t care, everything is horrible and will never get better so it doesn’t matter.
Continue readingSaturday Small Talk: Chat Away While I Have a Rumpled Day
Happy Saturday! Or, in my case, Grumpy Saturday. I slept terribly last night because I had caffeine late in the day because I was getting a headache because the weather was weird, so yeah, it’s all terrible. Prepare yourself for the grump-grumps.
Continue readingI Am Going to Try to List 5 Good Things About My Foot Recovery
I feel so predictable, but it’s been almost 4 weeks and I am SICK SICK SICK of my stupid foot and the stupid bandages and the stupid boot. I thought I was going to prepare and be smart and not mind at all, but nooooooooo. I’m just like every other patient
Continue readingFriday WatchAlong Main Hoon Na! 3pm Chicago Time Today, Right Here!
Yaaaaaay, a Shahrukh movie!!!!! Genevieve’s pick, so thank her for your happiness.
Continue readingMasaba Masaba Trailer! More Fictional Than Real, and I Like It!
Thank you Kirre! For telling me this was available and making me watch it. And now I have watched it, and it is quite fun.
Continue readingEnding Sridevi Day With The Beginning, Her First Movie Moondru Mudichu
This is really an unbelievable performance. As in, you watch the movie, enjoy the movie, then look it up and discover that it was Sridevi’s first adult role and she was only 13 and go “I don’t believe it”.
Continue readingWatch Main Hoon Na Here in 24 Hours! 3pm Chicago Time!
Thank you Genevieve! For your special farewell Friday Watchalong (stupid parental responsibilities during school year), you have chosen Main Hoon Na, one of everyone’s favorite films, unless they are blackhearted and soulless like Angie.
Continue readingIn Honor of Sridevi’s Birth Anniversary, Who is Your Favorite Working Actress of a Certain Age?
Sridevi! Was a star from 13 to 54, but I want to focus on the last few years. Generally women of a certain age aren’t given good roles, but she came out with Puli, Mom, and English/Vinglish proving that wrong. In her honor, let’s share our favorite actresses of a certain age who are still working and proving their strength.
Continue readingYRF is Leaking News Because They Want Our Opinion on a Potential New Shahrukh Film, What Do We Think?
If Shahrukh doesn’t announce it on his twitter, it’s not definitely happening. So this is not a “this is happening!” post. This is a “let’s talk about the implications of people rumoring this is happening” post.
Continue readingHappy Birthday Sridevi! A Review of Your Final Film, Dark and Strong and Feminist, Mom
I’ve reposted this review a bunch of times, but turns out that I never added on the “no spoiler” part to a repost before. So, yaaaay! Something to read if you are deciding if you want to watch this movie and don’t want to be spoiled! And then spoilers after the SPOILER bar, if you do want to be spoiled.
