I know a lot of my readers are reading this, and I wanted a place for us all to discuss. I also know a lot of my readers don’t want to bother but might want a preview of what it says. And I think I have found a way to satisfy both of you! Without feeling like I am breaking some kind of plagiarism rule or skipping important parts.
I will be putting up detailed posts on Karan’s book later this week, probably Wednesday and Friday. But in the meantime, I immediately got distracted by his declaration that he doesn’t believe in marriage any more and will never marry. Because that’s always what the rom-com hero says at the beginning, right? And then there are elaborate plot shenanigans and coincidences and he changes his mind?
Karan just posted a new column on NDTV. He was supposed to be a columnist for them, right? But after 2-3 postings last year, it kind of died out. And now we get another, clearly inspired by the Sanjay Leela Bhansali incident.
There are two parts to this story, and it’s the aftermath I find much more interesting and radical. So I’m going to start there and work backwards.
So many Ks!!!! No wonder Karan thinks they are “lucky”. Or used to I guess, since ADHM didn’t have any. Unless you count Ranbir. And Fawad. Okay, I am losing the point! The point is, Karan plus 2 Kapoors and one Kapoor Khan.
None of the statements in the headline are true! Well, they are sort of true. Like, 60-70% true, depending.
My copy of An Unsuitable Boy is sloooooowly making it’s way to me from New York, but in the meantime, the Indian press is keeping me up to date on the most interesting excerpts. This time, one about Kareena.
NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! New An Unsuitable Boy quotes leaked, confirming that Karan and Kajol are officially over!!!!!! My heart is BROKEN!!!!
Well, this was FASCINATING!!! I’m watching them out of order, so I just finished the Jackie and Sid episode, which was a bit tricky because there isn’t much that the audience was interested in learning about them. In comparison with Shahid and Mira, where we want to know EVERYTHING.
This was an interesting episode! Mostly because of the challenge it posed to Karan, how is he going to get the audience interested in these two people that we just don’t really care about that much? It’s the same problem he had with Parineeti and Aditya Roy Kapoor, but I think he handled it better this time.
Okay, could I fly to India on January 15th, buy An Unsuitable Boy in the airport, and then fly home immediately? That would be a reasonable expense, right? It’s not supposed to come out in America until March last I saw, and I am going to DIE! Especially now that excerpts have started being printed. And they are SO GOOD.
The big headline news being reported everywhere is “Shahrukh movies come to Netflix“. But here’s the big thing to notice in the stories, they are coming to INDIAN Netflix. So unless you do that thing where you use a mirror site and trick your computer into thinking it lives in India, or unless you yourself live in India and have Netflix and a good internet source, this does you no good.
I followed the controversy back when it first came out, but I couldn’t find a version to watch anywhere back then. And then the controversy died down, and it was posted online again, but I stopped caring. Until a couple of people in the comments here reminded me!
I don’t mean he’s getting the famous Kapoor figure (fingers crossed he never has that). Or the onscreen charm (he has always had that), but he is beginning to get just a hint of that terrifying interview quality. From what I’ve seen and read, it sounds like all the Kapoor men (except Shashi) have that a little bit, that slight hint of “Lord of the Manor, Don’t Cross Me or I’ll Have You Killed” in their eyes. On the other hand, Ranveer is still a total sweetheart. (first episode discussed here, and second here, and third here)
I missed this, because Star TV didn’t have the courtesy to suspend all broadcasting in honor of Dear Zindagi Week. It’s just the worst when these multinational media conglomerates don’t bother to tailor their products to local cultures. Anyway, catching up now, up first, Varun and Arjun! Just assume that health, family, home, blah blah blah are taken as a given. Here is the important stuff I am thankful for this year!
Tragically, these are not happening in the same movie. Kajol and Karan are still on the outs, and Kajol will not be playing mother to Sridevi’s daughter.
Moviemavengal just tweeted me an awesome article (really, you should all follow her on twitter), an interview with Karan Johar where he goes in depth about his creative process, his career ambitions, and so on and so on.
Internet Piracy for the win!!!! Stupid Hotstar.com, the legal website, won’t accept payment from outside India, even using a credit card. So I hunted and googled and got ten minutes into one video that was pulled literally as I was watching it, and finally a found a deep dark place that had a high quality version available which lasted long enough for me to see the whole show.
Overseas Box Office report is out! Woo! And it proves either that Ajay has failed, or that Ranbir is the rising star, or really it’s all about Karan. I’m pretty sure it’s all about Karan.

I put up my Spoilers review first, for once, because I wanted a place for people who had already seen the movie to discuss it. But now it’s time for a review for people who haven’t seen the movie yet, and are curious what other people think about it. But NO SPOILERS. Because the plot is very carefully constructed to build point to point, and if you do decide to see the movie, you should try to go in fresh.
So much more excited about the Dear Zindagi trailer! Partly because it is just the second one, whereas ADHM is now on, what, the 513th trailer? Remember how excited I was back when there were just a couple ADHM trailers? Yeah, that’s worn off by now.
Well, I guess if you give people everything they want, they will give you the one small thing you ask for in return.
