Continue readingHappy Day After Thanksgiving!!!! Also known as, “the day I get to sleep in and then organize my life”. I’m excited! But also, taking a break because I will always always bring you your TGIF posts.
Oh boy, my first Marathi movie! That hardly seems possible, but I guess it is true. I’ve certainly seen Marathi-based Hindi film movies, like Aiyyaa which had a distinctly Marathi heroine and family at the center of it. But it wasn’t, technically, in the Marathi language. But this is! I am just so multi-culti!
I am so happy this movie is on Netflix! It is the mature woman movie we have been wanting, and it is also the perfect Thanksgiving film, about making time for self-care in the middle of caring for your family. (oh, and there are some clunky bits right at the beginning, ignore them and keep going)
I may be failing at my “only have coffee three times a week and then the caffeine doesn’t get to you” system. I am sitting in my office on a no-caffeine day dreaming of coffee. Maybe I should get a hot chocolate instead and see if I can trick myself.
This movie is just barely a classic. It’s not the best, it’s got quite a few massive flaws in fact, but it’s still really interesting and worthy of discussion. And the best part is how well it shows women rescuing themselves, very appropriate for today’s discussion.
You ready for some fist pump moments of female power? I know I am! And I have collected them here, so long as the nice people on youtube don’t pull them down.
Yaaay, my first new Shahrukh review for Shahrukh month!!! I love Koyla, I think it is a secretly really deep film with statements on what is marriage and what is choice and so on. And on top of that, is a totally ridiculous and entertaining action movie. Best of everything!
This is almost as indulgent as when I rewrote The Philadelphia Story. Who in this day and age and on an Indian film blog knows the movie All About Eve? To the point of remembering all the details of the characters and themes and stuff? Oh well, it makes me happy, and keeps me tied to me roots (my roots being American movies before 1960 which were what I watched exclusively for the first 18 years of my life). Anyway, Procrastinatrix suggested the idea, so I know she at least will be interested.
Every once in a while the war drums start beating about how item songs are the cause of all the bad things that happen to women in India, and it always bothers me, because “item songs” ends up including a whole range of songs that are completely different in meaning. Oh, and this is kind of a partner with this post that goes into what objectification means, and this post that talks about male and female gaze)
More suggestions from you! Suggestions that also turned into reading recommendations for me, fun fun! Oh, and plot ideas for movies I really want to see made, whether the stories are translated out of the sci-fi realm or not.
Sorry sorry sorry! Yesterday just completely wiped me out (22 guests is too many guests, especially when one of them has severe dementia and 4 of them are small children). So I literally have not left my bed all day, and every time I try to think straight and come up with a brilliant fanfic, it all just sort of floats away from me. So I am doing a reprint and failing you, my faithful readers. Oh well, at least it is a really good reprint, based on Daboo Ratnani photos and Sanjay Dutt and his dog. Continue reading
I did eyes last week, and now I guess I am just moving up on the body? Seems like maybe it would make more sense to move down, but I have far stronger opinions about hair than I do about noses.
Suggestion courtesy of Meenakshy, I’m gonna do best eyes in Indian film. In multiple categories, because you can’t really compare, like, Madhuri versus young Salman.

Happy Madhuri’s birthday week (again)! I tried to come up with something clever and original, and all I can come up with is a bunch of photos of Madhuri, which isn’t clever or original at all. Oh well, she was very pretty.
Happy Madhuri week! Looking for something from your suggestions that I have already seen and could write about quickly, I landed on Dil. Because it is soooooooo terrible that I don’t need to really think that deeply about it, and it is also soooooooo fun that I can sincerely recommend it.
