Monthly Donation/Patreon/Book Purchase Reminder

I am trying to be pragmatic, and also to remember that I have new readers occasionally, and therefore putting up a monthly little reminder that there are ways to give me money if you feel like giving me money.

So, this is your monthly reminder that there are donation options if you feel an urge to pay me for providing content!  Because maybe you are a new reader, or maybe you suddenly got a raise at work and are wondering what to spend it on, or maybe you just forgot that there are ways to send me money if you want to show me appreciation for what I do.  So this is a reminder!

(I provide free content all day every day, so one tiny post a month reminding you that I am a real person whose work has value seems fair, right?  Please don’t hate me!)

There is a little button on the menu at the top, if you enjoy my writing and want me to keep going, you can always click there to give me a donation. If you don’t have the money, or don’t feel my content is worth paying for, that’s okay too.

Additionally, you can always buy my book, click HERE to purchase.  I get about 50 cents per book sale (exciting!  Means about $5 a month), but more importantly, every purchase drives me up on the Amazon/other website rankings, which means more people see me instead of other lesser books on the same topic.  Oh, and MOST IMPORTANTLY, then you get to read my book!  It’s very good.

For a straight donation because you love me and my website, here are two options:

Donate through Patreon, which will allow you to set up a monthly subscription donation.  And which can allow you to pick a reward, if you wish.

Become a Patron!

Or through Paypal, which allows for a one time donation of any amount you choose. Any time you particularly like a post, or appreciate something I am doing, just go over here and give me a dollar.  And feel free to add a note saying why you are donating, maybe I will write more posts like that.

Jab Harry Met Sejal Part 8: Radha! Almost! I Got Bogged Down in Set-Up

Oh boy oh boy oh boy!  I get to talk about my favorite part of the film!  I’m SO EXCITED!  Even though I kind of already went over this whole section in my first review.  I don’t care, I’ll find new things to say. (full index of Jab Harry Met Sejal coverage here)

Monday Malayalam/Happy Independence Day: Njan, A Different Kind of Independence Story

Well, this was fascinating!  Random pick from my Malayalam shelf, turns out to be the Malayalam version of an Independence film which is very very different from anywhere else.  Which I am particularly aware of, having just written a bunch of Independence themed posts!

Thank You for Reading! I Want to Give You Things!

Happy end of summer/beginning of fall, my favorite season!  And one of the things I am most excited about this fall is that people actually read what I say on this blog!  It’s so AMAZING!!!  And I want to thank you all for that.  I sent out thank you cards last spring (some of you were here for that), but now it’s time to thank you again.  Or for the first time if you weren’t here last spring.  So, even if you got a card last spring already, or just started reading, or have never commented, or comment constantly, doesn’t matter, I still want to send you a Fall greeting card to say “THANK YOU!!!!”  And read on for instructions on how you can make that happen.

Jab Harry Met Sejal Scene By Scene Part 7: Hiding, Talking, Sleeping

Oh boy oh boy!  I get to continue my favorite section!  I probably won’t get all the way to “Radha” today, that will be our little Independence Day treat tomorrow. (full index of Jab Harry Met Sejal posts here)

Silly Sunday Speculative Post: What If Our Favorite Historical Characters Were Allowed Happy Endings? Rang De Basanti, Asoka, Mughal-E-Azam

This is semi-inspired by a conversation I had in the comments on the Rang De Basanti post with Shaily about what would need to change for Siddharth and Soha to end up together.  Essentially, the whole movie except for the characters.  Which got me thinking about all the Indian historical films that I really wish could have historically inaccurate happier endings.

Happy Independence Day! Post 4, Lage Raho Munna Bhai

Happy Independence Day in Advance!  Like I said, I am tossing these posts out on a more or less daily basis until the 15th.  Partly because it’s a big holiday that deserves to be celebrated, partly because I want to give options to those of you who are not interested in my JHMS scene by scene.  These aren’t “real” posts (except for Rang De Basanti, I can’t skimp on that one), they are just quick little idea posts about the films, so don’t expect me to go super in depth here.

Happy Birthday Vyjantimala! You and Sridevi, The Two Great Actresses Born on the Same Great Day

So cool!  It’s like, August 13th is “Day of great dancers with big eyes and sweet smiles”.  I did 14 reasons I love Sridevi, I am sure I can come up with 14 for Vyjantimala! (this is an updated and reposted post from last year)

Happy Birthday Sridevi! 14 Reasons I Love You!

It’s Sridevi’s birthday!  I am so excited about celebrating!  Because it means we all get to watch a bunch of really great song sequences as I list of my reasons that I love her.  I did 13 reasons last year, but now she is one year older, so I will do 14! (this is an updated and reposted post from last year)

Toilet Ek Prem Katha Review (SPOILERS): Ignores the Obvious Villain

Well, I’ve been putting this off, because I didn’t have much to say.  And also because a got a nice string of abuse on my no-spoilers review.  Which is why I am a little mad at this movie.  Because it’s leaving me open for abuse!  Being so political that I can’t avoid commenting on the politics, even though I want to run a nice film analysis blog that only deals with social issues in generalities, not specifics.  And clearly it is political, because there are angry people looking for me to say bad things about it.  Oh well, I’ll spoil it for you all anyway, and maybe someone will leave a nice comment on this one.

Jab Harry Met Sejal Scene By Scene: Part 5, “Chinese Vase”

I’m here!  I’m excited!  The first scene which really needs explanation and discussion or else it makes no sense.  The one that we all get to have arguments about what it really means and if it is stupid or works and how we all (and all the characters) feel about things.  Oh boy! (full Jab Harry Met Sejal index here)

Toilet: Ek Prem Katha Review (NO SPOILERS): Loses Its Way When it Loses the Romance

Well, that was an interesting movie going experience!  One half a charming unusual love story, one half a massive Modi propaganda movie.  And then a hidden third half in a parallel dimension that is what the movie really wanted to be about and couldn’t.  The movie I thought the trailer was promising us.

Happy Independence Day! Post 3, Purab Aur Pachhim

Don’t lie, you read that headline and went “Aha! She is leaving the purity of the real Independence movies for the random India-themed films!  Lazy!”  But no!  You are not remembering!  All of Purab Aur Paschim takes place in the shadow of the Quit India movement.  And also Hare Krishnas.  But mostly Quit India. (if you want a real meaningful hardcore Independence Day post, check out yesterday’s on Rang De Basanti)

Jab Harry Met Sejal Scene By Scene: Part 4, Phones and Clothes

Happy Friday!  And Happy 4th part of JHMS scene by scene.  I saw it for the 4th time last night, and you know, it holds up!  Besides a couple of kind of slow parts in the second half, mostly just because the second half had more moments when Shahrukh and Anushka weren’t on screen together, and that’s what makes the movie work.  But the songs, the character, all of that is still rewarding re-watching.  But now I really need to stop, because the lack of sleep is beginning to catch up with me. TGIF: Jab Harry Met Sejal Themed, Men in Ties!

What is it about men in ties?  Maybe it’s because there’s a kind of “I’m a grown up who knows how to do stuff” feel to it.  And then when they get loose, there’s a kind of “I’m about to get naked” feel to it.  And it’s extra special in Indian films because western style suits are only for special occasions.  Or, every single scene in Jab Harry Met Sejal.

Friday Classics: Happy Independence Day! Rang De Basanti

Oh boy, I really do not want to write this post!  But it was a special request, and it really feels like something I HAVE to do the Friday before Independence Day.  But I refuse to watch this movie one more time (ha!) because it makes me way way too sad.  So be aware, this will all be based on memories from like 4 years ago, the last time I felt masochistic enough to watch it. (I’ve written on this film before, and promised then that it wouldn’t be the last post. You can read it here)

Jab Harry Met Sejal Scene By Scene Part 3: Indemnity Bond!

Happy Thursday!  My 4th and final watch is tonight.  Which is usually the watch where I stop enjoying the film.  1st time, so-so, but there is so much to process I am overwhelmed.  2nd time, much better, I can relax and focus.  3rd time, usually as good as the 2nd time.  4th time, now I am starting to get bored because I know absolutely everything already.  And then 5th time is DVD/streaming a couple months later, and I am back in.  Anyway, good news is, now that I have seen it 3 times, my memories are pretty locked in and I can do the scene by scenes without struggling too much. Happy Independence Day!!!! Post 1 of Many, 1942: A Love Story

My local bank has this funky series of plaques along the side based on an editorial from the local paper from like 1954 called “Can We Wave the Flag Too Much?”  This, my answer is going to be “No!”, at least if we are talking about the Indian flag.  And so, a series of short posts suggesting some patriotic viewing choices on the ramp up to Independence Day.  Also, some nice counter-programming to the Jab Harry Met Sejal bonanza.

Hello Youtube Focus Group! New Video on Box Office

Have I mentioned that technology hates me?  Or at least, doesn’t like me much?  Following your notes on my last post, I tried a fast-talking excited video.  And then after 3 days of trying, have totally failed to figure out how to add graphics (the other big suggestion).  So put a pin in the graphics requests (unless you have a suggestion for a free program I can download to do them), and just focus on the talking head part of it.

Jab Harry Met Sejal Scene By Scene Index

I don’t know why I didn’t start doing this ages ago.  So much easier to just have one place to come back to instead of trying to link to every other post from within each post like some kind of crazed math graphing problem.  It’s here!  It’s all here!  And I will just update this one place as I add new posts.

Jab Harry Met Sejal Scene By Scene Part 2: A Shameful Attraction

Oh boy!  Moving right along, I’m like a whole 5 minutes in!  Which wouldn’t seem like a lot, except I’ve been working on my DDLJ scene by scene, and that is sooooooooooooooo much slower.  And here I am, only on part 2, and we are already past the opening credits!  Woo-hoo! Lightening speed! (although, in case you were wondering, no DDLJ today, skipping another Wednesday.  Partly because this post took up a lot of time, partly because getting only 6 hours of sleep because I am seeing JHMS every night is not in fact conducive to clear thinking) (full index of scene by scene here)
