Silly Sunday: Kalank Without Alia, and Other Script Fixes

If everyone in Hindi film just sent all their scripts to me for a final pass before filming began, everything would be so much better. I can fix it all! Just give me a chance before you spend crores and crores of budget on a movie with an ending that MAKES NO SENSE. Oh and Kalank spoilers, obviously, only read if you have seen the movie. And if you have seen the movie, please give me your opinion and suggestions for other better endings!

Kalank Review (SPOILERS): First Love is True Love is Only Love

What an interesting love quadrangle! I really really like the central set-up concept for this film, and kind of wish it could have been moved out of pre-partition India and into a regular rom-com setting. And really, if you like romances, you should watch it. Don’t spoil yourself! Read my no spoiler review instead.

Kalank Review (No Spoilers): The Plot is Not What You Think It Is

Well, that was fun!!!! If it had released 20 years ago, it would be a solid hit and forgotten in a month, and then it would pop-up on TV occasionally and people would say “oh yeah, that movie!” I don’t know how it will do in today’s world at the box office, but at least critically I want to treat it as the nice unambitious pleasant fairy tale it aspires to be, not as the Great Noble Brilliant Movie that it wasn’t even trying to be. I suspect other reviewers might ding it for not being the Great Noble Brilliant Movie they thing it should be without realizing it never wanted to be that.

Kalank Full Length Trailer is Out!!!! (Also, it’s not based on What the Body Remembers)

Well, it’s pretty much what we thought. I think. No subtitles, because Dharma hates us. And then they will magically appear in like 3 hours. WHY DO THEY DO THIS???? Oh, and I actually did 5 minutes of research and confirmed that it is NOT based on What the Body Remembers any more than Paa was based on Benjamin Buttons (yes, that was a story for a while too).

Valentine’s Week Romance! Daawat E Ishq, Pari’s Other Overlooked Romance

I would say “why didn’t anyone tell me how good this movie is?”, but then there have been people screaming at me in the comments to watch it for months now, so I can’t really say that.  Anyway, it’s good!  Really good!  Running Shaadi good (my gold standard for overlooked brilliant little rom-coms).

Silly Sunday: A Summer Place, Shahrukh as a Sexually Unsatisfied Middle-Aged Man and Loving Father

I had such fun re-writing one strange memorable 60s Hollywood teen film last week, I thought I might try again this week. Especially because this one has the PERFECT role for Shahrukh. Oh, and it is also very VERY long. And not necessarily good, I just wrote myself into a plot hole and it took a while to write myself out.

Sunday ReRun: Daawat E Ishq, the Tragedy of the Father of the Bride

I would say “why didn’t anyone tell me how good this movie is?”, but then there have been people screaming at me in the comments to watch it for months now, so I can’t really say that.  Anyway, it’s good!  Really good!  Running Shaadi good (my gold standard for overlooked brilliant little rom-coms).

Silly Sunday: Fake Marriage Romances, One of the Best Romance Tropes, Featuring Aditya-Anushka, Ranveer-Dips, and SRKajol

Moviemavengal confessed her love for the “fake marriage” romance trope, and it’s one I like quite a bit as well.  And it’s pretty rare in Indian film, replaced by “real arranged marriage becomes love” which isn’t quite the same thing.  So I shall write a few script suggestions just in case anyone needs any! (oh, and if you want to see one that already exists, check out Love By Square Foot on Netflix)

Sonam Wedding Epilogue! Start Your ‘Ships!

I can’t stop myself!  I keep looking at Sonam wedding videos!  And, thanks to the latest batch, I now have several competing “ships” that I am rooting for.  And I am sharing them with you, in the hope of either getting companions on board the SS Relationship, or else getting a solid common sense mind to drag me off.

TGIF: Happy Passover! Ma Nishtana in Indian Film Format

Did you think I put up my traditional Good Friday “Hot Jesus” post and forgot my Jewish readers and Passover, on the very same day?  I would NEVER!!!!  And so a second TGIF post, based on the Ma Nishtana, the 4 questions part of the Haggadah, the instructions on how to properly celebrate Passover.

Upcoming Movies! From Salman, Anushka Sharma, Sharman Joshi, and ADITYA ROY KAPUR!!!!

Oh boy, lots of interesting movies to talk about today!  None of which are actually out there in the world yet, but that doesn’t mean we can’t talk about them

Happy Hanukkah! Let’s Talk Filmi Jews in India!

This is a sort of updated post, but really totally new.  I put it up for Rosh Hashanah a couple years ago, but back then I didn’t even know Aditya Roy Kapoor was Jewish, so it was woefully incomplete.  Not to say that this post is complete, but it is at least more complete than the previous one.

Silly Sunday: TV Show Remakes!!!!

This is just because I have been watching Cheers and now I can’t get the idea of a remake out of my head.  So I had to dig up a few more TV show options as well, just to round out the post.  Feel free to give me suggestions in the comments for more I could use if I missed your favorite!  Especially since my TV taste trends towards the classic.

Friday New Classic Daawat-E-Ishq! The Tragedy of the Father of the Bride

Aashiqui 2: A Star is Born With the Brilliance of Judy Garland Onscreen Replaced With the Brilliance of Mahesh Bhatt Offscreen

This is NOT a good movie.  But it is an amusing movie!  It wasn’t like the “wait for death” viewing experience of Azhar, or the “I am so angry I can’t function” experience of Ki & Ka.  It was a fun watch and if I had been about 20 years younger, I may have loved it.

New OK Jaanu Song! I am Conflicted

Remember how my whole OK Kanmani review was wondering what they would do with all the Tamil specific stuff that helped build a connection between the characters while they were both exiled in Bombay?  Well, this new OK Jaanu song shows the way the new movie might possibly have found a way to do the same.  And I am not sure if it works or not, because I am still so stuck in the previous one.

OK Jaanu Trailer: Was This Worth My Staying Up?

What is with Dharma releasing trailers at midnight my time?  I just went through this with ADHM!  If it was 3am, I wouldn’t bother.  But 11:30 is just on the farthest edge of when I would be awake anyway, so I figure I might as well stay up.  Oh well, I’ll have coffee tomorrow! (if you are curious, my review of the original OK Kanmani movie with SPOILERS is here)

Dear Zindagi Part 8: The Epilogue!

I was trying sooooooooooo hard to finish in the last section.  But I was also getting soooooooooo sleepy as it got later and later, so I finally gave up.  However, I did manage to get all the way to the emotional peak and resolution of the film, so everything I have to cover here is just epilogue stuff. (part 1 here, part 2 here, part 3 here, part 4 here, part 5 here, part 6 here, part 7 here)
