I watched Ambe Sivam! Another Kamal Haasan movie! And, I don’t know, I had issues. Mostly with the way they handled the ending. I could see a cool idea in there, but I think it got messed up a little bit by the need to make Kamal Haasan just the coolest dude ever.
News Round-Up: Ranveer Was Cute, Gauri Khan is Impressive, and the Court Case Blackmail May End
Already put up a post about the trailers that are out today, but there were a couple of interesting news stories today, and one really cute picture, so I just have to talk about them too!
Trailers! Trailer Trailer!!! Baar Baar Dekho, Happy Bhaag Jayegi, and Flying Jatt
So, Baar Baar Dekho trailer finally dropped today, which made me take a look at a couple of other trailers for movies I am less excited about that have been out for a while.
An Orgy of Devdases (Devdasi?): Dev D as the Least and Most Faithful Adaptation
This weekend, over the course of 30 hours, I went from having seen no Devdases to having seen all 4 important Devdasi, and read the novel. Oh, and I also watched Dishoom. And went grocery shopping. I didn’t sleep much, but what’s more important? Sleep or seeing every famous version of Devdas within the same 24 hour period so that I never have to think about them again?
News Update From the Art Cinema World: A Rape Conviction, a Malayalam Crossover, and Kangana Needs a Drivers License
Nothing really “fun” today, all of it is stuff I’m either concerned about or neutral. But, some of it is still interesting to talk about!
Kabali: My First Tamil and My First Rajinikanth Film in Theaters!
I saw Kabali! It was SO GOOD! Okay, the second half lost track of itself a little bit, and there were some character bits that could have been better, but overall it just had so much more depth and excitement and energy than the other movies I have seen lately!
Global Box Office: Kabali Makes the Mistake Sultan Avoided
Weekend figures are out! Dishoom did mostly okay, Sultan is in a very controlled drop, and Kabali is in an uncontrolled drop. Oh, and another Punjabi film opened well in Australia.
Late Sunday/Early Monday News: Aamir Makes Headlines Again, Smoking May No Longer be Injurious to Health, and Ranbir Moves On
This is one of those posts with a few interesting news stories, and one REALLY REALLY important news story.
Dishoom: Whole Thing! SPOILER Review Mixed With Summary
Dishoom Review (No Spoilers): So Many Cameos!!!
I saw Dishoom! It is NOT a Mumbai Police remake. Or if it is, it’s been re-written and re-written so many times as to be unrecognizable. Unlike Mumbai Police, it is just a super fun silly light hearted movie with no social content or awareness what so ever.
News Round-Up: Sanjay on Salman, Emraan’s Son on Camera, and a Barjatya is Dead
Sanjay is the big news. I already put up my birthday post for him, now the news is filtering out from his birthday press conference. But, there’s also new news about Emraan’s tiny little son, and some sad news from Rajshri films.
Parampara: A Movie About Tradition in the Long Tradition of Movies About Tradition
Parampara! Or, Tradition! (and now I have that Fiddler on the Roof song in my head) Anyway, this was a terrible terrible movie. And it was a Yash Chopra film! He must have run out of either money or interest at some point in the middle, because it is just confused and dull in a way that Yashji doesn’t usually let happen. In fact, I feel fairly comfortable saying this is probably the worst film Yash Chopra ever made.
News Round-Up: Ajay’s Next Movie, Anil Will Work with Arjun, and Early Box Office for Dishoom/Late Box Office for Sultan
I’m really excited about these super early rumors for Ajay and Anil’s next, even though they contain basically no substantial content, so I am reporting them anyway!
Oh Darling Yeh Hai India! : I Feel Like I Got to See Shahrukh Khan, the Stage Actor
I finally saw Oh Darling Yeh Hai India! Now I just need to watch Guddu and Devdas, and I will have seen every Shahrukh movie ever.
Happy Birthday Sanjay Dutt!!! 57 Years Old and Still Going Strong!!!
Yaaaaaaaay, Sanjay! Your first birthday out of jail with no court case hanging over you! That must feel so good! Here are 25 reasons I love you, one for every year between your debut in Rocky and your re-debut in Lago Raho Munna Bhai.
Important Late Breaking News: Salman Court Case and Super Sexy Photo
Honestly, the photo is the reason I am doing the post. The Salman news is technically more newsworthy, but the photo is swoony.
Baasha: Hey! I Saw a Rajnikanth Movie!
One of the commentators on a post about Kabali mentioned that people are excited because it looks like it might be similar to an old hit, Baasha. And what do you know, Baasha is on googleplay! So I was able to watch it!
News Update: Trailer! TRAILER TRAILER TRAILER!!!! And Other Stuff
Trailer!!! Dharma Trailer! Even if I don’t end up enjoying the movie, Dharma is the BEST at the promotions! Oh, and some other less exciting stuff is also happening.
Humpty Sharma Part 2: It’s Important Not So Much for What it Is, but for What it Says about DDLJ
I already did a detailed discussion yesterday comparing and contrasting the first halves of DDLJ and Humpty. And that got so long that I decided to break at intermission and talk about the second half today. This may be slightly too much thought to put in to Humpty (although it is a very good movie. With a terrible title), but it is interesting as an example of how DDLJ has forever changed and influenced the Indian romance film.
SRKajol FanVids, My Bedtime Comfort Food!
In my last fanvid post, I tried really hard to break out of my rut and move past the SRKajol fanvids that I have been watching every night before I go to bed since college. But that was so haaaaaaaaaaaard! I needed something to reassure me after all that, so I went right back to the SRKajol fanvid teat.
Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania and DDLJ: Why Are They the Same and Why Are They Different?
I just watched Humpty Sharma again, for like the 7th time. But it was interesting watching it now, while I am in the middle of my DDLJ recap. So I was hyper aware of what it took from DDLJ and what it got rid of.
Box Office: Kabali Does Great (no duh), and Sultan Avoids Saturating the Market
Bollywoodhungama has the global figures for the weekend! Woot! Shockingly (that’s sarcasm), Kabali did great.
News Round-Up: Emraan is Nice, Shahrukh is in Trouble, Salman is Out of Trouble, and Hrithik has a New Trailer
Finally! Finally a good news day! So good, that box office is going to get its own little post! Because there is too much else to talk about.
News Round-Up: Family Feud Starting, New Teaser with Siddharth and Katrina, and Dishoom continues to puzzle me
Finally! A juicy story involving family connections and possible repercussions through out the industry! I mean, most likely it will all blow over in a couple of days, but at least it is exciting while it lasts!
DDLJ Part 16: Shahrukh makes his move (part 2) Ready for the Moment I Fell in Love with Shahrukh?
I broke off sort of in the middle of a scene last time, because I was going soooooooooooo slowly, and because there was so much important stuff to cover! But now I’m back, and I’m going to get through to the moment when I fell in love with Shahrukh 12 years ago. Actually, I think it was 12 years ago this month. It was during summer school, and July sounds about right.
