So, I sat down to watch this before work on Independence Day, and I ended up having a much larger breakfast than planned, because that whole last hour of the hunger strike just had me going “ooo, maybe I’ll have another glass of milk! And toast! Toast with my eggs!”
Happy Indian Independence Day! I’m going to try a theme this year, and limit it to just things directly related to the Independence movement. Next year I’ll do something else like, I don’t know, patriotic songs that involve color coordinated clothing or something. The point is, there are so many patriotic options in Indian film! Way more than in American. At least, American post-WWII. And if I missed your favorite Independence movement set scene or song, just mention it in the comments!
This is one of those silly stupid fun movies that had a couple of moments that made me go “wait, am I imagining a hidden message here, or is it actually here?” So I am going to need your help in the comments to figure this out!
So cool! It’s like, August 13th is “Day of great dancers with big eyes and sweet smiles”. I did 13 reasons I love Sridevi, I am sure I can come up with 13 for Vyjantimala!
It’s Sridevi’s birthday! I am so excited about celebrating! Because it means we all get to watch a bunch of really great song sequences as I list of my reasons that I love her. I’ll do 13, because she was born on the 13th, and she was 13 when she had her first heroine part.
I loved this movie! So sweet and funny and tender. And then, right at the end, it pulled out a message that really packed a wallop and made me go “yes! That is why these movies are important!” Not just because of the lovers at the center, but because of everyone else around the edges.
Oh dear, not a good day for Salman or Shahrukh, and I can’t help but feel it is partly my fault! As an American, and part of “The Internet.”
If you live in America, Rudhramadevi just made it to Netflix, and you should definitely watch it! It’s like Bahubaali, but with a feminist message and really really bad CGI. But I like the message so much, I can look past the CGI.
Two trailers that I haven’t gotten around to discussing yet, and just to round out the post, my favorite song from KANK (actually, one of my all time favorite songs), in honor of the 10 year anniversary of its release.
ErosNow has added so many more Malayalam films! I got all excited, until I noticed that half of them don’t have subtitles. Oh well. But at least Meleparambil Aanveedu did, so I was able to watch that!
I really wanted to do 3 news stories about Salman, so I could have a nice structure for my headline, but no luck! And also no luck in only doing one on him and 2 on someone else, because his 2 stories today are too big to ignore. And then I had to shove a 4th story in there because the Shahrukh rumor is too good to ignore. It’s all out of balance!!! Oh well.
I saw Wanted, oh, maybe 4 years ago? Long after it came out, I think after I saw Dabangg, and got curious about the beginning of Salman’s new action era. Anyway, it was fine, I hated Salman’s hair, but otherwise it didn’t feel like anything special to me. Unlike Pokiri, which I watched after reading moviemavengal’s review, and which was WONDERFUL!!! I don’t know how they managed to mess it up, but all most of the stuff that felt interesting and unusual to me in this one just went away in the remake.
This post is really for moviemavengal, since she is the one who knows more about Mahesh. As usual with the regional industries, I am kind of in the dark and only know the little bit I have seen in the past few months. But, it’s his birthday today, and I feel like I should do SOMETHING! Okay, I’ve talked about all the important Devdases, all the good ones that are closely related to the novel and deal with the ideas of hidden tragedies and casual disasters and all those cool things. Time to deal with the one that is just really really really pretty!
Slow news day, but Salman did attend the trailer release yesterday, so we got some cool quotes from that. And there were a couple of release dates announced. And Yash Raj is going to battle for Parineeti and Bhumi.
Two trailers out today! I think they both might be attached to Rustom/Mohenjo Daro or something like that? Anyway, they are released online today, and I am excited!

Rabindranath Tagore died 75 years ago today, and to celebrate, he is trending on Indian twitter! So I thought I would throw up a quick post of all the things he means to me.
I heard about Eega right when it first came out, and I thought “how can this possibly be a hit? Not only is it kind of illogical on the face of it, it’s also super sad!” And then I watched it, and it totally works!
I’m not even sure I know who Ali Fazal is, but it’s still exciting that he might co-star with Judi Dench! Oh, okay, he was in a bunch of Western stuff, and also Always Kabhi Kabhi, which was produced by Shahrukh, so there is a Shahrukh connection, so therefore I care about him.
Feels a bit silly to have two epic length posts, but these are epic movies. Plus, there’s two of them, so two posts kind of seems right! Although really, they are so similar in so many ways, much of the time I am just talking about them together. Well, and the novel. It’s Kajol’s birthday! YAAAAAAAAAAY!!!! I LOVE her! Love love love! So I am going to do a full 42 reasons I love her, one for every year she’s been alive. Oh boy!
Devdas! Or rather, Devdas, Devdas, Devdas, Devdas, Devdas, Devdas. Because I have now read the original novel, and seen 5 separate film versions. I wrote about Dev D already, the most inventive and yet faithful remake. Now, I want to talk about the PC Barua Hindi version from 1936, and the Bimal Roy Hindi version from 1955. I have to talk about them together, because they are so similar, they really can’t be separated. And because I am talking about two movies, this post is going to be split into two parts.
Why a dozen? I don’t know! I always do a dozen! It seems like a nice round number, and it lets me do half facts and half songs. Although in this case I may swing even more in the songs direction.
