Well, we loved this movie unconditionally (almost), but still managed to get into a big fight in the middle of the podcast over whether Siddharth or Tiger Shroff is a better actor. Don’t even know for sure how we got on that topic, but things were a bit heated for a while there. Which I am sure will be fun to listen to!
HA! I WAS RIGHT!!! I rule all!!!! I am SO HAPPY!!!!! The twist that I hoped was the twist was the twist, not the other twist that could have been the twist. And I’m happy not just because I am clearly a GENIUS, but because the twist I hoped was the twist is so much better than the other twist would have been. (no spoilers review here) But you shouldn’t know what the twist is! Because it is SO MUCH more enjoyable going in blind, and this movie is SO GOOD. This is a definite “don’t spoil yourself if there is any chance at all you will be able to see this movie” kind of movie.
Okay, let me throw some titles out there for you: Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Desperado. Johnny Gaddar. Burn After Reading. Dishoom. Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle. Bang Bang. Get Shorty. Jhankar Beats. Now, are you smiling? Are you happy? Are you remembering good times? Or are you rolling your eyes because these are all stupid worthless fluff films? If you are one of the first people, this is the film for you (and also, we should be friends). If you are one of the second people, this is not the film for you (and we can still be friends, but maybe should only watch classic movies together not new stuff) (spoilers review here)
Happy A Gentleman day!!!! Such an odd title for the film. Not quite sure what it is intended to evoke for the audience. But I will focus on one small part of it, that very Western style of gentleman, the man in the tuxedo. And since they are all wearing essentially the same thing this week, we get to have a little “who wore it best” poll in the comments!
Not sure why I suddenly felt like writing about this film, but I did, so you will have to put up with it. And it is a really really good film. An odd film, not as easy a sell as Bhardwaj’s Shakespeare trilogy, but brilliant if you give it a chance. Plus, it’s Ganesh Chaturpathi, and this is a nice Bombay themed film for that.

I got lots of cool suggestions yesterday as to what I should cover next, but while I let those percolate (and please, keep suggesting! Here is the post where I ask for ideas), I am going to do something simple and look at the top grossing film year by year since 1940. Should be an interesting way to see the industry evolving, both financially and creatively. You’ll see what I mean when I am complaining about the out of control box office inflation lately. Plus, gives us all space to talk about something totally different from Jab Harry Met Sejal.

If you are an Austen person, and somehow have not seen this movie yet, FIX THAT!!! It is one of the all time great Austen adaptations, perfectly captures the spirit of the original while moving it to a modern setting. Plus AR Rahman songs.
Well this is an interesting week! And, hopefully, a sign of things to come. The big big films continued to underperform, but a small sweet film did much better than it should have. Kind of odd watching a movie which hits so many familiar beats, even in the same time period, but it is about Malayalis fighting the British instead of Americans. But then, that’s the point, the British are the British wherever they are, and there is only one particular form of warfare that is effective against them. Well, at least in the 1700s.
Happy Eclipse! Which I can’t see at all because it is super overcast here! And which is kind of okay with me, I wasn’t very excited about it in the first place. I don’t like it when the sun goes away! And if you feel the same, here are some songs to remind you of the sun.
Well, trailer time is upon us again. We had that little burst during Ramadan, then everything kind of slowed down a bit as JHMS and Toilet dominated the news cycles. But now they are successfully running in theaters, so we can all focus on what’s coming up after them. Two big things out today, full Secret Superstar song and Judwaa 2‘s first trailer. Oh, and Bhoomi came out a few weeks back, I just never got around to writing about it.

Why am I so excited about this movie? Is it the great soundtrack, the ridiculous plot, the shades-of-Dostana Miami setting? Anyway, I’m pumped! Can’t wait for Friday! And in the meantime, you can ask me questions.
Well, we all had good fun on my post this morning coming up with alternative plot-necessary reasons for Shahrukh to be sexy at 11 for an entire film. The clear winner was a James bond themed plot with someone of equal sexiness like Madhuri. And then the runner up that was my favorite, Shahrukh as James Bond type who falls for the glasses wearing Moneypenny type.
This is maybe my least favorite part of the film. There are still fascinating interesting things that happen, but it’s a lot of stuff happening in the “real” world instead of internally, in order to set up the really interesting internal stuff that happens in the last bit. So not as much long intense consideration of character moments, more “and then this happened, and then this happened, and then this happened.” (full index of JHMS coverage here)
A total indulgence here. Now that we have seen Shahrukh play an entire film with the sexy cranked up to 11 (full JHMS coverage here), I am toying with ideas for other films he could be in with a similar effect.
