Happy Birthday Akshay! 50 Years Old and Still Looking GOOD!
50 years old today! Making him the middle child of the old school 90s stars. Younger than the Khan “triplets”, but older than Ajay. Anyway, Akshay is so big, he definitely deserves a full list of reasons, one for every year. And he is so old, that I am going to have to split those reasons in half! So, here are the first 25, right after midnight Chicago time. (this is an updated and reposted post from last year)
Friday Classics: Sadak, Taxi Driver Mahesh Bhatt Style
This is a bit of an odd duck for a “classics” post. It came out only 25 years ago, and isn’t as well remembered as some other films from the same era (Saajan, Khalnayak). I hadn’t even heard of it until it came up in an article on Sanjay. And then I watched it and went “wow! This is a brilliant movie!” So I am here to sing its praises, just in case you haven’t run across it before.
Happy Birthday Ashaji! And Also, Coincidentally, Patsy!
It’s Asha Bhosle’s Birthday!!!! How Wonderful! 84 years old today! And you want to know something interesting? It’s also Patsy Cline’s birthday! Another female singer who had a lot of life and a lot of love and an amazing voice. (this is an updated and reposted post from last year)
Hindi Film 101: Top Hits of Indian Box Office Part 3, 1971-1985
Now, FINALLY, we reach the films people know! Which is a story in itself, the way films were ignored and forgotten during the early years, even TV only plays stuff from after 1970, let alone being able to find it streaming or on DVD or VHS. But, setting that aside for a moment, let’s look at these new “modern” films. (part 1 here and part 2 here)
Prabhas is Building Dollywood?
Tuesday (On Wednesday to Make Up for Skipping last Week) Tamil: Yennai Arindhaal, Non-Toxic Masculinity
(did you think I didn’t remember I skipped last Tuesday? I did! I felt terrible! So this is to make up) I think I may have finally figured out what I like about Gautham Menon films. It took a while, because they seem like the kind of film I shouldn’t like, perfect heroes and opaque heroines. But with this film, I think I have cracked it. Oh, and also, Ajith looks goooo-ooooood with grey hair! Which is neither here nor there, but I felt it should be acknowledged.
Jab Harry Met Sejal is on Youtube!!!!! LEGALLY!!!!
How is this even possible? Oh, and THANK YOU to P in the comments for telling us. But mostly, how is this even possible?
Youtube Video: Arjun Reddy and Baadshaho Box Office (Also, More Hair)
You know what sells in the fast paced world of youtube? Sex! Sex and drugs! Which is to say, my hair video (the most wholesome version of sexy possible) and my initial box office video on super druggy Arjun Reddy are the two most popular. So I combined them and did another Arjun Reddy box office post this morning, while multitasking and brushing out my night time braid.
Wednesday Watching Post, What Are You Reading and Watching and Thinking This Week? With a Question For You!
Happy Wednesday! I had SUCH a productive weekend! Didn’t clean or cook or do laundry, but I did finish the Anu Aggarwal autobiography and watch a ton of movies, which is a kind of productivity.
Luck By Chance Annotated Edition Part 3: From Circus to Fridge
Part 3! Gonna see if I can manage to get through more than one page of notes in one post. At least a page and a half. I don’t want to get too ambitious. (full listing of Luck By Chance posts here)
Happy Teacher’s Day (in India)!
(Be sure to read to the end, the last bits are the best bits)
Okay, how many Teacher’s Days ARE there?!?!? I already did the American/International Teacher’s Day, and Guru Purnima (click the links if you feel the need to review former teacher songs), and now there’s ANOTHER Teacher’s Day? Just for India? Thank goodness there are so many teacher songs! (this is an updated and reposted post from last year)
Box Office: Arjun Reddy Wins By Default
Well, this wasn’t a great weekend! Terrible in the US, okay in some other places thanks to random spikes. Arjun Reddy is still doing good, but it looks like it is doing better than it really is just in contrast to all the others.
Tuesday Telugu: Arjun Reddy (SPOILERS), Is Paro Feeling Devdas’ Pain, or Is it the Other Way Around?
This is is a movie that rewards viewing whether or not you know what happens, so feel free to read this, if it is the kind of film you would enjoy, knowing what happens in advance won’t change much. And as I said in my last No SPOILERS review, the true brilliance of the film is in the story structure, so you can’t fully understand why it is remarkable without knowing that.
Tuesday Telugu: Arjun Reddy (no spoilers) Let’s Applaud it for What it Is, Not What it Isn’t
My real review, which discusses all the ways this film is remarkable, is going to be the next one, the SPOILERS one. Because without getting into specific plot spoilers, there really isn’t all that remarkable about it. The content of this film has been more or less done before. It is the release (mainstream in the Telugu market) that is unusual. (spoilers review here)
Monday Malayalam: Neram, Not Bad
Well, that was okay. Definitely an okay movie, not a great movie, or even a terribly interesting one. But it was available to rent on googleplay, and it had Nivin and Nazriya, so a fair enough timepass. But I would still have enjoyed re-watching Ohm Shanti Oshaana for the thousandth time more.
Happy Labor Day! Laboring Songs
While I celebrate by cleaning my apartment, enjoy this songs that celebrate labor! And, hopefully, will help inspire me to labor myself.
Starter Kit for Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam Films
Okay, Asmita in the comments suggested this, but I am a little nervous about it. Because I really really don’t know as much as I should about the non-Hindi industries. And I know SO MUCH about Hindi that I am going to have a hard time limiting myself. But we will see how it goes. Oh, and after you watch all of these, you can just put something in the comments if you want more recommendations based on your favorites, I would LOVE to do that. But this is just the start, I have so much more knowledge to give.
Monday Morning Questions Post (4 Hours Until We Watch Raja Hindustani on Twitter!)
Happy Labor Day! I don’t have to go to work! Lucky Me! So instead, I get to answer your questions, and then start watching Raja Hindustani on twitter with whoever wants to join me at 10am Chicago time.
Happy Birthday Rishi Kapoor!
Happy Birthday Rishi!!!! Did not realize you are the same age as my father. But mostly, Happy Birthday! An industry legend, who acted in your first classic film at age 18. And so I will give 18 reasons I love you. (this is an updated and reposted post from last year)
Well, I Gave Myself a Migraine
And now you get to distract me! I’m not sick enough yet where I get to take my pills, so I need to do something to kill time while I wait to get sicker. So I’m going to complain to you all about it for a while. Plus, watching videos and typing here, and my TV going across the room, is just going to make the headache worse faster, woo-hoo!
Shubh Mangal Saavdhan Review (SPOILERS): A Couple Learning to Think as “Us” Instead of “You” and “Me”
I already put up my no spoilers review, I encourage you to read that one, because this is a really sweet movie that deserves to be seen and not spoiled. On the other hand, we do mostly know the plot just from the trailer, so I guess in this case spoilers aren’t THAT bad. It’s not what happens, it’s how it happens.
Shubh Mangal Saavdhan Review (No SPOILERS): A Love Story Between Two Real People
Well, this was a delightful movie! I had high hopes based on the trailer, but then Toilet was such a disappointment with a really similar premise that I got spooked. But no! This movie is great! No reservations about it at all, exactly the sweet love story the trailer implied.
Anusual: Anu Aggarwal’s Autobiography is a Judith Krantz Novel Come To Life
Well, that was a terrible terrible very fun book! I believe essentially not one word of it, but BOY was it fun to read! Oh, and it also taught me nothing about the film industry, just a lot about Anu (who wasn’t really in the industry for that long).
New YouTube Video! Future of the Khans and More Importantly, My Hair!
The content here is so-so. I had a better take where I didn’t lose my train of thought, and I didn’t accidentally say “Salman” when I meant Sharhukh. But, more importantly, my hair looks GREAT! I mentioned in the post earlier today that I have hair like Jaya in Silsila, and then I realized you may not believe me, so I wanted to put up proof.
