Well, this was agony. I saw on twitter before work that it would be coming out this morning, and then I had to wait and wait and wait until I was finally able to watch it when I got home. And now I have!

Sincerely, one of my favorite things about the Indian film industry is how it handles death. America is terrible with death in general, we hardly like to even acknowledge it, and we never let it interfere with “business”. But Indian film (and maybe India in general, it’s outside my area) treats it with the respect it deserves. And so when a great figure goes, the effect isn’t limited to tweets and articles in the newspaper, it has reverberations beyond that.

American Musicals Post: La La Land and Vennilave
This is one of those situations when I get SO FRUSTRATED with how everyone is going “WOW! Did you see this?” While I am going “Yes, when I was 5 years old…..Do you, like, never watch anything before 1980?”, and I just CAN’T TAKE IT ANY MORE!!!! So I am going to force you all to learn the basics of American musical/dance history on film, so you can better appreciate how that interacts with modern Indian film, and the occasional very very rare modern American musical.

Thanks to Salman’s Being Salman app, my phone has been going “boop-boop” and alerting me every time he puts out a new Tubelight image. I keep waiting for a teaser or something more than just a poster, but that doesn’t seem like it is happening any time soon, so I will work with the poster.

Yay, more rom-coms! 2016 was the year of serious patriotic historical dramas, but 2017 is looking decidedly more romantic. Romantic and dramatic, none of that lightweight stuff like Befikre. Which means I am watching these trailers going “wait, is something terrible going to happen or is this just a humorous misunderstanding?”

Fathom Events and Devdas: Indian Film Moves Into the High Art Realm
Here’s an interesting little announcement! Fathom Events in America is planning a “Bollywood” series. Which early reports say will feature Devdas and Veer-Zaara and maybe others. So, this means the Indian film audience is officially being split into “high” and “low”. America’s version of multiplex and single-screen.

Two Unrelated Videos: Sarkar 3 and Prithviraj!
Mohzin on my Wednesday Watching post recommended a new interview with Prithviraj, which I was able to watch after work today, and it was fascinating! Probably in a bunch of ways I missed, but also in some I managed to actually catch despite knowing almost nothing about his industry. And then separately from that, trailer for Sarkar 3 came out! And it is kind of fascinating to look at the two of them in terms of how Hindi film stars present themselves versus Malayalam.

Yay, Rani’s back!!!! I can’t decide if all these 90s actresses coming back is because the 90s really did have the best batch, or because the industry has finally started to accept women over 35 as more than just mothers. Probably a combo of the two.
Dharma Movie Updates! Badrinath and Bahubaali
Is it crazy that I am equally excited for both these movies? Badrinath should be very very proud if I am putting it up there with Bahubaali 2!

Well, everyone has decided that the duldrums of February is the time to promote their films, and the duldrums of March is the time to release them. It’s an interesting sign of the state of the industry that I find the piddling little early spring releases much more interesting than the big deal winter ones.

T.J Stevens posted on last week’s Wednesday Watching post a video from Anupama Chopra’s “Film Companion” series, which was really interesting! So interesting that it is too much to talk about in a post comment. And yet possibly slightly too little to talk about in a post. We will see!
AIB and SRK: Podcast Report! 5 Interesting Things!
Thanks to the nice commentators here, I was alerted that Shahrukh had just done a podcast with AIB, and it was a hoot! I watched the whole thing, in two parts, and it was very enjoyable. But most of it was in the kind of “it’s the way he said it” way, so I can’t exactly recreate it. But there were 5 interesting things that came up that I want to discuss.
