Quick one today, nothing super exciting, but some fun stuff to think about and maybe for you all to talk about.

Friday Classic: Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, Strong Women Fighting and Performing as Equals with Strong Men
Finally watched it! Months and months later. And years late to the whole Luv Ranjan genre. And I am fascinated! It is so much better, in so many ways, than I expected. Oh, and this is an insanely long review, partly because of the huge block quote in the middle of it. But it was too good to shorten!
Trailer Again! Manmarziyaan, Abhishek Once More as the Unlikely Hero
Everything’s coming up Vicky! Takht announcement, and now this trailer. But, more than Vicky, everything’s coming up Abhishek. He’s BACK! And how!!!!
Dog Hazel is Sad….But Cute!
Yes yes, it’s another fluff post. But I put up a nice big long one this morning! Let me have my fluff.
Hindi Film 101: The Problem of Unfulfilled Upper Class Man Film
I was feeling bad for writing such light weight posts lately, and then I remembered, oh right, I watched 3 movies this weekend and wrote 6 full length reviews (2 each) for them. Just, not everybody was interested in those reviews, so for some of you this is a pretty light week. To make up for it, I pulled out some of the more general discussion sections of my reviews of Karwaan and cobbled together a Hindi Film 101 out of it.
Karan Johar Announces New Movie Takht, The Return of the Mughal and the Return of Poetry to Hindi Film
Okay Karan, I’ll let you make me stay up late one more night. I am so tired, but this can’t wait until morning.
Watch This Video and Tell Me I’m Not Crazy!!!!!
I put up this video as part of my Friendship Day post, and it got no comments, which makes me think either no one watched it, or it isn’t as remarkable as it feels to me. And I am going slowly insane trying to figure out which it is. Please! Watch and comment and tell me I’m not crazy!
Trailers! Loveratri and Aayush Sharma’s Tragic Facial Paralysis, Laila Majnu and Imtiaz Ali’s Little Brother, Stree and Shraddha (sigh)
Well, this is just an orgy of nepotism today! Some good, some bad, some boring. Anyway, trailers!
Wednesday Watching Post: What Are You Watching and Reading and Thinking this Week?
Happy Wednesday!!! Halfway through the week, my sister is in town this weekend, I am excited! What’s going on with you?
Tuesday Tamil: Iruvar Review Repost, in Honor of Karunanidhi
I reviewed this movie ages ago, and I am not an expert on Tamil history or society or even film. So in honor of Karunanidhi’s passing, this is the best I have to offer.
Box Office: Mulk Does Bad, Karwaan Does Better, Fanney Khan Does Best
I know, I skipped last week, but there wasn’t much to talk about. This week, three things to talk about! (as always, figures from renttrack by way of bollywoodhungama)
News Update: Salman on PC, and Shahid Does Prabhudeva
This is it, right? This has got to be the end of the Priyanka Chopra story, since PC refuses to give a statement herself, that means Salman’s version becomes definitive and now we are done? Please please say we are done! Oh, and if you don’t care about PC, it is possible this other news story will get you very excited (angry maybe?).
Karwaan Review SPOILERS: Birth, Death, True Love, All Less Important Than if Dulquer Will Quit His Office Job
I already put up my No Spoilers review which was just a wee bit cynical and unsympathetic. Versus this review which is a lot bit cynical and unsympathetic. If you want to watch the film, you should probably read that review. Not because this review has spoilers, the joy of it is in the songs and the beautiful cinematography and the line delivery by Irrfan, not in any details of the plot. But because I am just the entsy-ist bit mean and sort of tie this movie into the entire problem of class/gender oppression in the world.
Karwaan Review (No Spoilers): Oh the Struggling Upper Middle Class Male Unfulfilled Office Worker! Weep for His Tragedy!!! WEEP FOR HIM!!!
I am a bit over the “greatest tragedy in the world is a wealthy upper class man who just wants to be an artist” film trope. Which was probably clear from the title if this post. Indian, American, French, Norwegian, it’s all the same thing, and I am SICK OF IT. Good lord, just count your blessings and get over yourself.
Fanney Khan Review (SPOILERS): 1st World Problems Shoved Into a 3rd World Film
I already put up my No Spoilers review. You can read that if you are obsessed with avoiding spoilers, or you can read this. It’s a remake, so most of the plot is already is to find out, not like I am revealing big secrets here.
Puppies! And Amar Akbar Anthony
Silly post, but I just got an email from the animal shelter foster listserve I am on and I have to share a joke with you. (Don’t worry, it’s a highly funded no-kill shelter, these little guys will get adopted in no time)
Fanney Khan Review (No Spoilers): Too Much Sincerity and Too Little Honesty
Well, this was not a good movie! But a not-good movie in that way where I could see the goodness struggling to break through, and then being suffocated by bad choices. Very frustrating, with a different cast and a slightly different script, this could have been something special.
News Round-Up: Hrithik Will Dance, Salman Will Circus, and Priyanka Will Promote Herself
It was so nice not reporting Priyanka news for years and years. But now she is back and I can’t escape her. And I really don’t like it, because it makes me sound a little mean and a lot crazy, but on the other hand, it is what it is and this is the only way to interpret it. Other stuff is more interesting though, so I can talk lots and lots about that and little little about PC.
Monday Morning Questions: What Do You Want to Ask Me the First Week of August?
Happy Monday! I was up way way too late yesterday watching two disappointing movies back to back. Good news is, we snuck into the second one so I didn’t have to pay twice, just watch twice. Anyway, keep me awake! Ask me questions!
Rajan Nanda, Husband of Ritu Kapoor Nanda and Father-in-Law of Shweta Bachchan, has Passed Away
I don’t have much to say about this, because Rajan was a Delhi businessman, not a movie person. But I am irritated that it is being reported incorrectly in all the press, his Kapoor connection ignored in favor of his Bachchan one, and that is forcing me to write a post.
Silly Sunday: Malayalam LM Montgomery, Anne of Green Gables with Nivin Pauly
I’m doing it! A totally ridiculous extremely specific post for those people who live within the Venn diagram overlap of “Familiar with Malayalam Films” and also “Familiar with the Anne of Green Gables Series”. So, Angie. You better appreciate this Angie!
Happy Friendship Day!!!!
Happy Friendship Day!!!!! And Kajol’s birthday, it’s a busy day. Anyway, here is a nice little video post with some friendship videos, and you can leap in with your suggestions for more in the comments.
Happy Birthday Again Kajol! Helicopter Eela Trailer!!!!!
Oh wow, this movie looks so good! I thought it was going to be some sort of kitschy come back thing just riding on Kajol’s popularity, but no, it looks really really good! All on its own. The script idea is great, and Kajol is the perfect person to carry it off.
Happy Birthday Kajol!!!! 44 Reasons I Love You
It’s Kajol’s birthday! YAAAAAAAAAAY!!!! I LOVE her! Love love love! So I am going to do a full 44 reasons I love her, one for every year she’s been alive. Oh boy! (this is an updated and reposted post from last year)
Saturday Night Report, Laundry and Dog Hazel
Well, I just spent the past 4 hours working flat out to finish laundry. And Dog Hazel supervised. She was NOT helpful.
