What is it about men in ties? Maybe it’s because there’s a kind of “I’m a grown up who knows how to do stuff” feel to it. And then when they get loose, there’s a kind of “I’m about to get naked” feel to it. And it’s extra special in Indian films because western style suits are only for special occasions. Or, every single scene in Jab Harry Met Sejal.
Happy Thursday! My 4th and final watch is tonight. Which is usually the watch where I stop enjoying the film. 1st time, so-so, but there is so much to process I am overwhelmed. 2nd time, much better, I can relax and focus. 3rd time, usually as good as the 2nd time. 4th time, now I am starting to get bored because I know absolutely everything already. And then 5th time is DVD/streaming a couple months later, and I am back in. Anyway, good news is, now that I have seen it 3 times, my memories are pretty locked in and I can do the scene by scenes without struggling too much. (full JHMS index here)
I don’t know why I didn’t start doing this ages ago. Oh boy! Moving right along, I’m like a whole 5 minutes in! Which wouldn’t seem like a lot, except I’ve been working on my DDLJ scene by scene, and that is sooooooooooooooo much slower. And here I am, only on part 2, and we are already past the opening credits! Woo-hoo! Lightening speed! (although, in case you were wondering, no DDLJ today, skipping another Wednesday. Okay, are we all ready to set aside our expectations and our prejudices and look at raw figures? Are we excited? Do we have our calculators out and our common sense hats on? Are we ready to try to figure out a pun based on the title of this movie, because I couldn’t and I need help? (The best I could come up with was “Jab Harry Met Slow Business”, which isn’t great).
No Spoilers review is already up, time for SPOILERS! And then, sometime next week, I start the slow crawl through the scene by scene. Because yes, this movie is good enough to deserve it. Oh, and also good enough that you shouldn’t SPOIL yourself if you are planning to watch it. Not super super good, I don’t want to oversell it, but good enough that it is worth avoiding spoilers.
OH MY GOD!!! If you are attracted to Shahrukh Khan, and if you have found him increasingly attractive as he ages, then this movie will KILL YOU. Like, kill you dead. I thought he was distracting in Dear Zindagi, but this is a whole other level. However, I should warn you, if you are not attracted to Shahrukh Khan, or find him less attractive as he ages, you will not enjoy this movie.
On the one hand, this was too good not to share. On the other hand, I’m not going to just rip off Tumblr and steal their page views. Oh happy happy day! I love New Shahrukh Release Day! The preparation and excitement are almost as much fun as actually seeing the film (sometimes more fun, RAEES! You were not a fun experience at all! Good movie, not fun).
Yesterday I put out a kind of no news-news discussion post about why “Phurr” was having a limited pay only release, and why this wasn’t actually “news” it was just the first officially promoted version of something that had been happening in a low key way for a while. And now that is even more true because, poof! Youtube video!
Happy Wednesday! A Shahrukh Week Wednesday! So exciting! These are the best weeks.
I feel like I have used this example before, but I can’t remember what for. Anyway, the new song from Jab Harry Met Sejal is (supposedly) coming ever closer to us. And yet I find myself thinking, “will it ever actually arrive? Or is this a Xeno’s paradox situation?” (and also, once again, I should not go on twitter!)
Happy 3 (or 2?) days until Jab Harry Met Sejal! It’s getting so close! And I really really hope it is even closer, not because I want to watch it 24 hours sooner, but because if it comes out Thursday that means I don’t have to write the review Friday night which means I might actually be able to get some sleep Friday night before I get up at dawn the next day to help my parents host 26 people. Although, I had a similar problem with the last Anushka/Shahrukh release and that turned out to be a MASSIVE disappointment, so maybe I shouldn’t worry so much. But on the other hand, their first movie together I loved. So it’s a mixed bag.

Happy 4 (or 3? Please please?) days until the Jab Harry Met Sejal release! Time to talk about another film that I think might make an interesting background watch, Patiala House! Plus, I just love Patiala House and think more people should watch it.

I have to help my parents host a bunch of people the next day, so I am half looking forward to the movie and half dreading having to stay up until 2am writing reviews, and then get up at 6 the next day. I did a very comprehensive discussion of Imtiaz’s filmography yesterday, so today an easy small post, on Chaahat and Shahrukh as the hired lover type.
So, we’ve all watched “Hawaaiyan” a million times now, right? And we’ve all gotten into the footplay thing in the middle? Or is that just me? In order to celebrate our new shared foot fetish, let’s look at a whole bunch of bare foot photos.
Happy Jab Harry Met Sejal Week! I always get a scattering of complaints when I do theme weeks like this. Which might be my fault, because I don’t make it clear why I am doing this and what it really is (not just fangirling over a new big release). And I know I have a lot of new readers now, so I am going to quickly explain why there is this thusness before moving on in the post.
Well, now Shahrukh is just super super mad at me. Could he tell I’ve been cheating on him with Nivin Pauly and Madhavan? Anyway, he not only posted this without subtitles, he posted it at the exact moment I was leaving for work, meaning I couldn’t watch it until just now. If he had posted it as little as 15 minutes earlier, I would have been all set! See, clearly jealous and hurt. I’m sorry Shahrukh! I will never stray again!
This is such an indulgence of myself, even more than my Golden Girls post. But I have now finished my dozenth rewatch of the entire run, and I can’t resist. Partly because I want to add songs and stuff, but also because I really really want to tighten up that plot. And make Phoebe end up with the guy she is meant to end up with, not Paul Rudd.
One thing that really struck me about the new JHMS trailer released today was how delightfully familiar SRK looked in that leather jacket. I could do a whole other post on the psychological meaning of leather jackets (Western, motorcycles, slightly forbidden, impractical (SO HOT IN INDIA), helps hide narrow shoulder and expanding waist issues), but we don’t need that, we just know that men in leather jackets=bad boy sexy.
Mad at me, but still willing to help, having sensed that my blog views were way way down over the past few days, he provided me with content. See, even when we are in a fight, he still cares.
