I was going to do a “100 years of history in 10” list, and then I realized there AREN’T actually 10 jodis of equal level. So I am just going to introduce you to the really really big ones and without worrying about how many I include or putting them in order or anything.

Padman Trailer: Mansplaining Menstruation
Remember how I was so sick yesterday I had to put up rerun posts? Keep that in mind, it may have made me a bit irritable.
New Tiger Zinda Hai Teaser! Doggies!
New teaser! Which adds almost nothing to what we already knew. But hey, it’s a week to the release, they could release anything at this point and we would all talk about it.
Janam Janam and the Raj Nargis Backstory
Another reposted post from the early days! My first stab at Raj and Nargis, in terms of what they meant related to the homage to them in SRKajol movies. Based on “Janam Janam” from Dilwale.
Jaan-E-Mann: My Favorite Movie That No One Else Likes
This is I think the first serious review I wrote. Back when no one was reading me. So I am reposting it so you can enjoy it now. And also because I am too sick to write new content today, all that sitting up and focusing.
Happy Birthday Raj Kapoor! 63 Reasons I Love You
You’re dead, but that’s no reason to stop celebrating. Your legacy lives on in many ways. So I am going to count down 63 reasons I love you, one for every year you lived (until you died). (obviously this is a reposted post from last year, I don’t have time to come up with 63 new reasons every year, not even for Raj)
Dilip Kumar’s Autobiography Part 2: The Drona to a Whole Generation of Eklavya’s
Yaaaay, Dilip made it all the way to 95! And I made it all the way through his massive autobiography! And now you don’t have to, because I am summarizing the whole thing! Isn’t that nice of me? (part 1 here)
DDLJ Scene By Scene Part 39: Mehndi Lagake Rakna Continues!
What, you thought it would be over in one entry? Nope, this things gonna continue for another 2 parts at least! Anyway, it’s a really important song! And I think the last song of the film? Am I forgetting something? If I’m not forgetting something, that is even more reason to appreciate it, that this is the last glorious burst of song before the rest of the movie plays out. (full scene by scene index of DDLJ here)
Wednesday Watching Post: I’m Home Sick!
Happy Wednesday! This comes to you from under a mountain of blankets. For once, I called in sick even though I could technically walk. I feel so guilty!
So, what am I watching? Mostly old sitcoms while I drift in and out of consciousness.
Reading, nothing! Books are so heavy.
Thinking, thinking about when it’s time for my next Advil.
And now, a thematic question for you! What is your home sick movie, the one you can watch over and over and it makes you feel better?
Happy Hanukkah! Let’s Talk Filmi Jews in India!
This is a sort of updated post, but really totally new. I put it up for Rosh Hashanah a couple years ago, but back then I didn’t even know Aditya Roy Kapoor was Jewish, so it was woefully incomplete. Not to say that this post is complete, but it is at least more complete than the previous one.
Tuesday Tamil: Richie Review (SPOILERS), Nivin is Alone in the Film
I already put up my “no spoilers” review, this is the SPOILERS version. For people who have already seen it, or can’t see it in theaters but want to know what it is like. Or just want to know how it was without spending 2 hours of their lives on the film. Because, although I want to tell you all to buy tickets and support Nivin, I really can’t in good conscience recommend that. It’s not the best use of your time.
Tuesday Tamil Part 1: Richie Review (No Spoilers) a Disconnect Between Director and Story
Huh. Well, this just barely didn’t work. All the separate parts worked, but they somehow didn’t come together in a way that made for optimal impact. I think I might have to blame the director.
Monday Malayalam: Nanthanam, Prithviraj Tries to Make an Impact Opposite 2 Heroines and a God
I did it, I watched Prithviraj’s first film! And I have to say, compared to Malavaardi Arts Club and Nivin and ABCD and Dulquer, it’s a lot less stomach churning. Mostly because he has a lot less to do, really it’s a movie about the 3 women, Navya Nair and Revathi and Kaviyoor Punnamma.
A History of Cricketer and Movie Star Romances
Congrats again to Anushka and Virat! In their honor, I am pulling out and updating a post I did a few years back on the intersection between Cricket and Hindi film stars.
Anushka and Virat Are Married!
And the photos are really pretty! They are both super smilely and happy looking, which is how I like my wedding photos, instead of stressed and distressed looking.
Monday Morning Questions Post: Happy Dilip Saheb’s Birthday!
Happy Monday! I did not get much sleep last night, and I have a long day today (Christmas party after work), so keep me awake by asking me questions!
Happy Birthday Dilip Sahib!!!!! I Read Your Autobiography for Your Birthday Part 1
I finally read it! Don’t tell my friend who brought it for me all the way from India 2 years ago, only for it to sit on my shelf unnoticed unloved and unread. Until now! It took a while, but I finally finished it. And it was fascinating in lots of little “history of the industry” ways.
Ted Talks: Episode One, Shahrukh Preaches Optimism and Openness
I watched it! Meaning I am now backed up on all my other things. This is what I do for you, the vocal Shahrukh fan readers. My poor Malayalam readers are now going to be mad at me because I didn’t have time to write my Monday review.
Silly Sunday: The Christmas Story, in a Hindi Movie Trilogy
I’m excited about this! In spitballing back and forth in the comments on last week’s post (which was more about Christmas as a festival of lights and social experience and sexy holiday romance), it was suggested that I should just do the whole story. And I think I can! If I break it into 3 bits.
Christmas Giveaway Week 6!
Welcome back to the giveaway post! And a card I had specially made just for last week’s winner. And because I got a free card coupon and I thought I might as well.
100 Years of Indian Film History in 10 Songs
Well, enough avoiding, time to do songs. Music is NOT my area. I have never studied music history seriously at all, and more importantly, I am next door to tone deaf. I can enjoy music. But on a very very very superficial level. Like someone who looks at a beautiful sunset and sees it as 3 simple stripes of red orange and yellow. That’s me! So, treat me gently and kindly as I attempt to put together this post based on my knowledge of film history and what people have told me is beautiful.
Babies!
That’s all, just BABIES! Adira turned 1 today and her party hosted all the cutest new members of the film fraternity. Let’s go to the pictures!
100 Years of Hindi Film History in 10 Actresses
Okay, you ready to fight me? The problem is, unlike actors, actresses never really get the chance to lead the industry, there isn’t a clear “Queen” the way there is a clear “King”. So this list is a bit of a judgement call, I realize that, and that means there is lots and lots of space for us all to argue.
Massive Multi-celebration Birthday Post!!!!!
Happy Birthday Shotgun Sinha, Dia Mirza, Dino Morea, and Priya Gill! Phew! I’m exhausted! Obviously, they are not going to each get reasons I love them. Let’s see, how to be fair? Okay, each person gets 3 reasons, either 2 songs and one fact or two facts and one song. Whatever I feel like. (this is a reposted post from last year)
TGIF: Garam-Dharam!!!! Obviously
Happy Dharmendra’s birthday (again). To celebrate we are going to have a bit of a rigged contest, Dharam against all comers. But obviously, Dharam will win. Partly because it is his birthday and I want to be nice, and partly because he just is the best.
