Some interesting little stories today! With some interesting things to think about in terms of Big Questions of Indian society and film and fun stuff like that. And also, little petty questions like “what the heck is happening on the Manikarnika set and why are they trying so hard to cover it up?”
This is one of those Big Big essays. And I am very sleep deprived and stressed right now which, strangely, puts me in the perfect frame of mind for this particular discussion. My brain craves theoretical instead of practical concerns.
Well, this is the gossip cycle that will never end. I don’t know why I am surprised, this is how it happens, right? The gossip comes out, and then everyone reacts to it, and then everyone reacts to the reactions. And I am part of the problem, because it is just barely on the line of affecting the industry and the big messages of stuff so I feel like I should talk about it. Oh, and also Pa Ranjith might make a Hindi film, yaaaaay!
I have 20 minutes before the kids get here, so I am going to write a news report post real quick, and then dig a croquet set out of the attic so they can hit each other with mallets. Or possibly actually play croquet, but that seems unlikely.

I really really hate this movie. Which is funny since I just mentioned the last Shahid-Bardwaj collaberation Kaminey as my favorite film. But this one, it doesn’t work at all, and I hate it.
On Friday I did a “TGIF” of happy couples, and then I realized that I was kind of skipping to the end, posting the couples without defining “happy” before. And I also find it legitimately fascinating how tricky the public versus private requirements of Hindi film industry marriages are.
Happy Monday! So much news to catch up on! For instance, Amitabh went to the hospital, which is always an exciting experience for the international news media. Poor Amitabh, can you imagine if every time you went in for a routine procedure, your picture was headlines everywhere in the world? So stressful!
So many news items about upcoming movies! Mostly how they are being released early, or released late, or starting filming. Just a lot of date talk, really. Which isn’t very interesting on the surface, but is super super interesting when you dig in and think about what those dates mean. Even more news! Announcements of upcoming movies primarily. Which kind of makes sense, we are entering the spring doldrums, so now is the time to start your promotion campaign while nothing exciting is hitting theaters.

Well, I have to dip my toe back into the insanity of the Kangana/Hrithik situation, which has just boiled over again (now I am picturing a pot boiling over and my dipping my toe into it). And then, as a reward, I get to talk about SK Films restructuring, which is much more exciting.
Thanks to all this buzz about the remakes, I thought it would be a good time to stop and reflect on the original. Plus, counter-programming to the very male new releases this week, Spyder and Judwaa 2!
Probably not a coincidence, right? Not like “ugh, another big controversy I am caught in! Hey look, I have a longform writing platform to discuss it. What a coinky-dink!” Probably more like “should I take this column offer from NDTV? I probably should, because it will be useful the next time I am inevitably caught in a controversy.”
Well, this is not what I was hoping for from a Bhardwaj movie! He is stylish, sure, but it is style that overlays real hardcore traditional messy Indian emotions. And Indian settings, gritty villages and remote farms. This thing though, at least based on the first trailer, is all style over substance. Luhrmann after Strictly Ballroom.
I posted about them earlier today, but since then Hrithik’s camp has issued a statement saying the earlier story was fault. Whew! Such a rollar-coaster with these two!
Nothing really “fun” today, all of it is stuff I’m either concerned about or neutral. But, some of it is still interesting to talk about!
