I know I know, you are sick of Jab Harry Met Sejal. Or, alternatively, you love it and are depressed that it will be ending soon. Either way, I am sure you have opinions what I should do next with my post-JHMS life. And here is where you get to help me decide! Oh, and also do your usual Wednesday report on what you have been watching and reading and thinking this week.
Jab Harry Met Sejal Part 18: Phurr and Anushka’s Awakening
This is going to sound really silly, but what “Phurr” reminds me of the most is “Kwaja Mere Kwaja” from Jodha-Akbar. Only with Diplo and sex instead of Rahman and God. (full index of JHMS posts here)
Tuesday Tamil: Kandukondain Kandukondain, Austen Brilliantly Translated to Tamil
If you are an Austen person, and somehow have not seen this movie yet, FIX THAT!!! It is one of the all time great Austen adaptations, perfectly captures the spirit of the original while moving it to a modern setting. Plus AR Rahman songs.
Box Office Report: Bareilly Ki Barfi Does Sweet Business
Well this is an interesting week! And, hopefully, a sign of things to come. The big big films continued to underperform, but a small sweet film did much better than it should have. Seeing as we are entering a 3 month period of small sweet films and no big films, this is all good! (as always, numbers courtesy of BollywoodHungama and Rentrack. Full info available here)
Jab Harry Met Sejal Part 17: Anushka Is “Worth It”
This is such an odd section of the film. It’s very hard to describe without sounding really really stupid and shallow. But it isn’t! If you go on this whole journey with these characters, it makes complete sense. (full index of JHMS posts here)
Monday Malayalam: Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja, Indian Warfare in India
Kind of odd watching a movie which hits so many familiar beats, even in the same time period, but it is about Malayalis fighting the British instead of Americans. But then, that’s the point, the British are the British wherever they are, and there is only one particular form of warfare that is effective against them. Well, at least in the 1700s.
Happy Eclipse Songs Post!
Happy Eclipse! Which I can’t see at all because it is super overcast here! And which is kind of okay with me, I wasn’t very excited about it in the first place. I don’t like it when the sun goes away! And if you feel the same, here are some songs to remind you of the sun.
Trailer Post! Judwaa 2, Bhoomi, Secret Superstar
Well, trailer time is upon us again. We had that little burst during Ramadan, then everything kind of slowed down a bit as JHMS and Toilet dominated the news cycles. But now they are successfully running in theaters, so we can all focus on what’s coming up after them. Two big things out today, full Secret Superstar song and Judwaa 2‘s first trailer. Oh, and Bhoomi came out a few weeks back, I just never got around to writing about it.
Fourth Reminder! Get Your Card! (Also, greatest holiday card ever at the end of the post)
Okay, 4th reminder! Make me happy and let me give you things! Or, at the least, scroll to the end of this post for Greatest. Christmas. Card. Ever. And yes, I am going to just keep putting these posts up until I feel like enough of you have responded. I know for sure that plenty of people who got the Spring thank you cards still haven’t responded. LET ME THANK YOU! IT MAKES ME HAPPY!
Jab Harry Met Sejal Scene by Scene Part 16: Train Trip!
Phew! We get back to unspoken interpersonal shifts in this section, instead of that boring stuff actually happening in the last section! Who needs THAT! (full index of JHMS coverage here)
Monday Morning Questions Post, A Gentleman Week!
Why am I so excited about this movie? Is it the great soundtrack, the ridiculous plot, the shades-of-Dostana Miami setting? Anyway, I’m pumped! Can’t wait for Friday! And in the meantime, you can ask me questions.
Second Silly Sunday: So Sexy Shahrukh! James Bond Version with Madhuri/Tabu
Well, we all had good fun on my post this morning coming up with alternative plot-necessary reasons for Shahrukh to be sexy at 11 for an entire film. The clear winner was a James bond themed plot with someone of equal sexiness like Madhuri. And then the runner up that was my favorite, Shahrukh as James Bond type who falls for the glasses wearing Moneypenny type.
Jab Harry Met Sejal Scene By Scene Part 15: The World Intrudes
This is maybe my least favorite part of the film. There are still fascinating interesting things that happen, but it’s a lot of stuff happening in the “real” world instead of internally, in order to set up the really interesting internal stuff that happens in the last bit. So not as much long intense consideration of character moments, more “and then this happened, and then this happened, and then this happened.” (full index of JHMS coverage here)
Silly Sunday Post: Sexy Shahrukh Options
A total indulgence here. Now that we have seen Shahrukh play an entire film with the sexy cranked up to 11 (full JHMS coverage here), I am toying with ideas for other films he could be in with a similar effect. You know, because the story requires it of course. UPDATE: Following suggestions in the comments, I added more sexy SRK options here
Raees Full Coverage Index
Another Index finished! And I think this might be the last one? Because Bahubali is already indexed, and there hasn’t really been anything else that big this year.
Dear Zindagi Full Coverage Index
And another Shahrukh movie! I honestly didn’t set out to cover Shahrukh more than anyone else (I do personally like him more than anyone else, but that shouldn’t affect my professional style reviews). It’s just that I started the blog in late 2015, and since then Shahrukh has been in 5 major movies and Salman and Aamir have only been in 1 each (I’m not counting Tubelight), and Dangal came out at Christmas so I didn’t have time for full coverate.
Ae Dil Hai Mushkil Scene By Scene Index
I forgot I did this! Thank goodness I looked at the list of films in 2016 and it reminded me. So now ADHM gets its own index. With only a wee bitty bit of Shahrukh in it.
I Went to the Indian Independence Day Parade!
Happy Saturday! I’ve got family in town and, for no particular reason, they all got excited about going to the Indian Independence Day Parade at the end of my street. Even though I kind of knew it would be a short parade with mostly boring business floats.
Bareilly Ki Barfi Review (SPOILERS): Don’t Be Fooled, It Really Is About The Title Character
What a nice movie! Just nice nice nice. Everyone is a good person trying to do good things. But it turns out that the good-est person doing the best-est things is the one who is right there in the title. Also, DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN/CAN WATCH!!!! If at all possible, this film deserves to be seen in theaters without spoilers. But I know some of you have already seen it, and some of you won’t be able to see if for weeks if ever, so in that case you can read on. (no spoilers review here)
Don’t Forget to Get Your Thank You Card!
So far, I haven’t heard from nearly enough of you! Especially people I have sent cards to before. Remember, I am not going to send these again unless you give me your address new on this post. Just in case you moved, and also because I don’t want to be that weirdo from the internet who sends you things without permission. Also, where are my brand new readers? I know you are out there! Don’t be shy, I will send you things even if you just started reading.
Jab Harry Met Sejal Scene By Scene Part 14: Not Legal Offense
What an interesting scene this is! Followed by a couple less interesting scenes, then another interesting few ones. We will see how far I get today. (full index of JHMS coverage here)
Bareilly Ki Barfi Review (NO SPOILERS): Leaves a Sweet Taste on the Tongue
What a sweet sweet movie! That’s the “twist” they don’t show you in the trailer, it is much sweeter than it sounds. Very barfi like (the sweet, not the other movie of the same name).
Jab Harry Met Sejal Part 13: Klara Appears
Welcome back! Kind of a double post, partly because my viewer numbers are telling me that people are losing interest (I know, not most of you, but some of you), and I want to crank through this thing while most of you can still remember the film. And also partly because the last section felt like it should really lead straight into this one (full JHMS coverage index here)
TGIF: Girls Don’t Make Passes at Men Who Wear Glasses….Or Do They?
My friend suggested this for last week, but I already had the tie idea, so I pushed it for this week. I am very excited. Yes, the red glasses will make an appearance.
Jab Harry Met Sejal Part 12: Beech Beech Mein and More
Yay, post-Interval! More importantly, post my least favorite scene of the film (the last one I covered, right before the interval). And now we get to move back into the fun stuff (full index of Jab Harry Met Sejal coverage here)
