I guess Viviek just did another scummy thing using the Aish-Salman story? Not surprising, he has been breaking boundaries and making public what should be private for the past 16 years. The Viviek press conference was the start of the road that lead to what we have now with Kangana spewing hate at the world and the media gobbling it up, and believing it. NOTE ABOUT COMMENTS: This post is purposefully about 2003 and the aftermath. So ideally, any comments will place the whole situation in context of the original situation, Viviek and Salman and Aishwarya, the media, private and public divides, and abuse.

FanFic! The Most Unacceptable Possible Plot For Indian Film, I Have Found It!!!! And, on the Other Hand, The Most Acceptable Plot for Shahrukh to Play!
Watched another early morning classic noir, a jail break movie. But what intrigued me for an Indian remake is that it managed to come up with the most shocking possible plot and I kind of want to see someone remake it just to watch everyone Lose Their Freakin’ Minds. And I also watched an early morning classic family film which would be perfect if Shahrukh wanted to play a befuddled father. Or Anil. Or Aamir. Whoever.
Continue readingTamil RePost: Robot/Enthiran! Read My Review of the First One Before the Second Releases; I did NOT Like It
I finally saw Robot! I think it might be one of those movies that you miss out too much if you don’t watch it at the exact right moment. Watching it now, just a few years later, the special effects seem dated, the song sequences not so great, and even Rajni Sir’s performance is not as good as it could be. Remember, I am coming off of seeing him in Kabali, where he not only played his age, he played a layered real complicated version of himself. I mean, this performance is great, the best part of the movie for sure, but I kept thinking “why are you doing this when I know you could do so much better?”
Happy Birthday Aish! All Your Best Songs to Celebrate!
What with the Shahrukh Extravaganza, I haven’t celebrated Aish before this year. But now I’ve got time, why not! I’ll celebrate the part of her I like best, her song sequences.
Tuesday Tamil ReRun: Kandukondain Kandukondain, Austen in Tamil
If you are an Austen person, and somehow have not seen this movie yet, FIX THAT!!! It is one of the all time great Austen adaptations, perfectly captures the spirit of the original while moving it to a modern setting. Plus AR Rahman songs.
Tuesday Tamil ReRun Announcement: Next Week, 10/2, Kandukondain Kandukondain!
I am sure my regular Tamil readers are rolling their eyes a bit at this. But this is such a wonderful movie, and a great introduction for those of you who have been all-Hindi up until now. AR Rahman soundtrack, mixture of stars (Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam), and a great script based on Jane Austen. What’s not to love? (by the way, no Tamil on Tuesday this week because I am hoping to see Chekka Chivantha Vaanam in theaters and I will review it whenever I can see it even if the day doesn’t start with a “T”)
Sunday Film School ReRun: Jodha-Akbar, the Perfect Biopic
This post isn’t as long as I remembered, but it is probably nice to have a little short post for you all to read instead of the overwhelmingly long ones. After all, the movie is long enough without the post making it even longer.
Friday Classics: Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam Before Manmarziyaan
Happy Friday! I thought of all these cool movies I wanted to review, and then I thought “No! I should save them for a Friday when I plan in advance so people can watch them!” So this Friday, instead, a very un-cool movie.
Happy International Positive Thinking Day! Watch My Mental Gymnastics As I Take All The Worst Things of Hindi Film and Make Them Good!
This is a holiday MADE FOR ME. I am all about the positive thinking. To an almost unhealthy degree, I have no patience with myself when I am self-pitying. “Suck it up, Margaret!”, I think, “Find the bright side and stop whining!”, I order myself. But look! Now the International Day people (whoever they are) have given me a challenge, let’s see if I can rise to it, and find something that it would be almost impossible to be positive about and somehow manage it.
Tuesday Tamil: Iruvar Review Repost, in Honor of Karunanidhi
I reviewed this movie ages ago, and I am not an expert on Tamil history or society or even film. So in honor of Karunanidhi’s passing, this is the best I have to offer.
Fanney Khan Review (SPOILERS): 1st World Problems Shoved Into a 3rd World Film
I already put up my No Spoilers review. You can read that if you are obsessed with avoiding spoilers, or you can read this. It’s a remake, so most of the plot is already is to find out, not like I am revealing big secrets here.
Fanney Khan Review (No Spoilers): Too Much Sincerity and Too Little Honesty
Well, this was not a good movie! But a not-good movie in that way where I could see the goodness struggling to break through, and then being suffocated by bad choices. Very frustrating, with a different cast and a slightly different script, this could have been something special.
News Round-Up: Priyanka and Her Evil Twin Priyanka, Aish and Abhi, KriArj and Fanney Khan, Hrithik and Tiger, Akki and Bebo
This is usually the day I do my box office report, but I went over to BH to get the numbers and ran into a bunch of news stories I thought I should talk about first. So box office is coming, eventually, but first news for us!
Trailer Update: Aish is Boring in Fanney Khan, Utkarsh Sharma is Still Cute in Genius, John Abraham Wears White in Satyameva Jayate
None of this are super super exciting, but they fill out the day, so why not talk about them? Also, I want to vent about the Fanney Khan song.
Hindi Film 101: Star’s and the Masks They Wear and How to Talk About Them
I just got in trouble again, some more, for discussing and critiquing a star persona which was seen as critiquing the person behind it. Which made me start to think about how I define for myself the star persona versus the person behind it.
Fanney Khan Teaser: Who Here Has a Crush on Jazz Musician Anil Kapoor?
Me me, I do I do!!!!! Anil should always play his own age, it’s the only way. I am excited enough that he is getting a post all to himself because there aren’t any other teasers/trailers out today I want to talk about.
FanVid Post! I Just Found a Rich Vein of Hrithik Roshan
It’s like a little miracle, I was looking for a song on youtube and poof!!!! New fanvid channel! Which is mostly Hrithik (enjoy, Filmilibrarian!)
Shahid Day Finale! His First Notable Film Role!
“Notable” as in, you can actually recognize him in this. Something that I have never been able to do in Dil To Pagal Hai.
Happy Birthday Yash and Roohi!!!!!
A happy post! To balance the serious one from earlier today. And also because I looooooooooooove Yash and Roohi. Most serious and concerned babies ever!
Friday Classics: Jodha-Akbar, for Hrithik’s Birthday
I’ve been kind of thinking about writing about this movie, ever since the Padmavat thing started, and now it seems like the write time with Hrithik’s birthday this week and all. So here I go!
News Round-Up: Aish, NO!!!!! And How Everyone Spent the Holidays. Also, Bonus Prabhas
Terrible terrible news! You thought Shraddha in for Vaani was the worst heroine casting news possible, you haven’t heard this! Oh AISH!!!!! Why do you torture us so?
Anushka’s Bombay Reception! Who Was There and What Did They Wear
Getting this out of the way right at the beginning, I am not a fan of Anushka’s lehenga. It’s just kind of boring, and the waistband is weird. But the other clothes are worth looking at!
Silly Sunday: Knitting Fanfic!!! In Honor of Visiting My Sister (Including Shahrukh Sexy Sweater Story)
Happy Sunday! Much later than usual. Because I am visiting my sister and I was busy learning how to crochet and stuff. Which brings me to this post! In honor of my sister industriously knitting away next to me, and our conversation on the TGIF post of the lack of nice handmade sweaters in the world, a knitting themed fanfic post!!!!
News Round-Up: Bhansali and the Bachchans and Censor Versus Censor
Happy Veteran’s Day! I bring you greetings from my sister’s living room while we watch Nagarjuna on the TV (we needed something nice to wake up to). Very exciting to wake up to, SO MUCH NEWS!!!! Including the continuing saga of Abhishek.
Happy Birthday Aish! My 12 Favorite Songs
Aish is not my favorite actress ever, or my favorite public persona person. But on her birthday, I am going to follow a “if you can’t say anything nice…” policy, and just focus on her dancing, which is incredible. She shows both Bharat Natyam training, and a really good ability to sell a dance onscreen. So here are my 12 favorite Aish dances. (this is an updated and reposted post from last year)
