I have completely lost count of how many of these I have done. Oh well, they are just for fun, it doesn’t really matter. And I’ve had a high number of “thinky” posts over the past few days, it’s okay to throw in one that is just for fun.

It’s been pointed out that I might appear to undervalue this film and that is why I haven’t spoken much about it. Truly, I don’t undervalue it! It’s just such an unusual film that it doesn’t fit easily with a discussion of anything else. Nothing else is really like it, and therefore available for comparison with it. And it didn’t start a particular trend in filmmaking (beyond the general “Family Films” trend), because it would be so hard to imitate. But yes, I do know about this movie, I know all sorts of things about it and I am aware of it’s place in film history.
I don’t mean photos of sandwiches (that would be this TGIF), but rather photos of 3 people in which they make a kind of sandwich image. Should make a nice change from the one-shot images I usually use.
Happy Friday! My goodness this has been a frustrating day. The second I get in to anything at work the phone rings and I have to stop. Whether it is blogging or sending an email or doing accounting stuff for work-work, I just don’t have long enough to be able to focus on it. I put up a post about the 3 phases of an actress’ career in Hindi film (Starting Out, Established, Married), and then I also put up a post about starter films to get to know actors. And I was puzzling over how to do a post about actresses, since they really don’t have the same kind of massive career backlog as actors, and I thought “Aha! I can combine the two posts!” So that’s what I did, here are some of the top actresses divided into their 3 career eras (or 2, depending). I could have kept going on and on, but I ran out of energy, so I stopped at 7. I’m sure I will be back with more.
This came up on yesterday’s News Round-Up post when we were talking about Dips and Padmavati and where she might go next. The thing is, there is a standard route where she will go that is kind of an unspoken but accepted thing. So I thought I might as well speak it, just in case you are new to the films and are unaware of the expectations for an actress. Oh, and also give a comparison with Hollywood in case you are new to Hollywood and unaware of the standard route there.
This is inspired by Alisa, our new commentator who is trying to get a handle on the films. And also likes Aamir, thus the orgy of Aamir at the end this. It’s half tongue in cheek, just an excuse for fun songs, but also serious, these songs will really give you a leg up on some common words.
No Shahrukh, so sad! But I can do my belated Halloween post with ghosts! Nice ghosts, because I don’t like scary ones.
Next week I get down to 11, right? So I can go back in depth instead of these shorter ones? That will be a relief. This week though, another series of really short kind of idea sketches, since I have to do a full 18.
Wicked witches, evil uncles, twins, love potions, Madhuri Dixit, horses, fairy tale kingdoms, Danny Denzongpa, bungee cord fight scenes, geese, have I said anything bad so far? No! There is nothing bad in this movie! It’s all goodness, goodness so rich that maybe it was hard for people to stomach, and thus its massive flop at the box office on release. And, I was surprised to learn from the comments on my sexy songs post, not something that the readers here might even be aware of.
So, this week, I had 3 half-baked ideas (first and second from conversations in comments with Asmita, 3rd from conversation with Joyomama), and no fully baked ideas. So I am going with the 3 half-baked.
My friend suggested this for last week, but I already had the tie idea, so I pushed it for this week. I am very excited. Yes, the red glasses will make an appearance.
Prepare yourself for another Hindi Film 101 that takes me out of my comfort zone! Someone asked a question on Monday about dancers on film, and there was also suggested that I do some discussion of actresses from the south. So I am going to try to combine that and talk in very very general terms about classical dance traditions in India and how that relates to actresses, especially from the south.
Happy Madhuri’s Birthday again! And Happy Monday! I started the week by waking up at 4:30am (again). 6 more days until my sister comes back from Chennai and my sleep schedule gets back on American time instead of India time!
I don’t know why nobody seems to know what to do with Madhuri. She is so wonderful and amazing, and ever since her post-children return to the industry, she isn’t getting the platforms she deserves. But I have ideas!
It’s Madhuri’s birthday today! Well, today in India. But I want to start celebrating as soon as possible, so I am putting up my birthday posts today. And it’s a big birthday, and she is a big star, so I am doing one reason for every year she was alive, 50 in total. (this is an updated and reposted post from last year)
Inspired by Shahrukh’s tweet early today with his new look for the Imtiaz Ali movie, turbans! Men and women in turbans! It is a wonderful thing.
I’ve been watching City of God basically on a loop for the past 3 days, just sort of in the background while I do other things. And the one moment I have to stop and watch every time is the “Kaalangal” song. At first because it is sooooooo sexy, but on repeat viewing because it is just so pretty. In a way that felt really unique, until I started to remember the other song sequences I had seen like it before. There is something about that really sweet moment when two people figure out for the first time that they love each other.
I’m I the only one who has seen Streets of Fire? If so, you must ALL WATCH IT IMMEDIATELY!!!! Anyway, Streets of Fire was remade in India as Tezaab, with Anil in a tapoori-type role and Madhuri in her break out performance, and lots and lots of 80s style action.
Many interesting things to discuss with this story! Mostly gossip stuff not industrial but, hey, in the Indian film industry, gossip IS industrial!
It’s Friday, I had a long week (that Wednesday Cubs game!!!), so my friend and I just spent two hours working on a very very silly personal challenge together. An attempt to answer the question “What flavor/food best encapsulates the feeling of certain movie star’s sexiness?” I did the men and she did the women. (also, she’s a really cool Burlesque dancer under the name “Rosemary Maybe“, just in case she ever comes to your town, you should check her out!)
This is one of those movies that I knew was really good, and I just haven’t gotten around to watching it. Well, haven’t gotten around to it, and it was kind of hard to find a copy of. But, thanks to the proliferation of international streaming services, I now longer had that excuse, so I finally watched it!
